  1. does anyone know if milk here in australia undergoes more or different treatment than milk in the uk? I only ask as in the uk, if you leave milk out for a week or two it goes all lumpy and smells like liquid hell. I left milk out accidently in melbourne when we went to adelaide for two weeks, we returned it was still liquid and smelt fine. I wasnt brave enough to taste it, but it did make me wonder!
  2. the most stable way is to get a voip box, it plugs into your home phone, you buy a uk landline number for 3 quid a month. this way people in the uk can phone you for the cost of a normal local call (which for most mobiles is free ) you can phone uk for 1p a min landline or 10p mobiles. there are many companies who do it, we use http://www.voipfone.co.uk/ its that good that when the sound goes all crackly on skype, and there are odd dropouts/ slow connection, we use the phone for sound and skype for the video, that way the sound is always perfect. cant recommend it enough there is something more natural to having a normal phone to have a natter on, this gives you that no pc needed (a broadband connection is though) you can also for free have it routed to your mobile, great for when you're exploring aus! if you need any more info let me know
  3. there is likely to be a demand for uranium for the foreseeable future, however mining is in itself is not an ideal use of our planet. It's important to ask do we HAVE to? The UAE known for their huge reserves of some of the highest quality oil on this planet are heavily investing in renewables, they have the climate and it means they can sell more oil! We should have the same plan for uranium, why smoke our own stock? there was kickback in all these industrial transitions, this one however isn't burning spinning jennies or insisting on a man carrying a flag in-front of the car, these people are motivated funded and ingrained in the fabric of society, governments and media do as their told, and as we're a trusting bunch, most of us are conditioned to believe the man in the suit or the media. it seems our current government for all their apparent hate of renewables may be about to sort out the nuclear issue for good. they are in the process of forcing the CEFC to only invest in fledgling technologies, in an attempt to shackle them so in time they can be branded uneconomical and nonviable, however they appear to have dropped a bollock. two forms of generation hold immense potential but thus far have not come into the mainstream, tidal and wave based generation. these forms of generation never stop and can generate oodles of clean energy, if you want your baseload here it is combined with wind, household (and the odd large scale) solar and effective storage the problem will be solved. its important to note, this time period (the next few years) is likely to be the lowest the demand for electricity will ever be, we have closing heavy industry, efficient household goods but very little electric transport, as EV's become more mainstream and industry returns, I comfortably predict power demand to almost double. As most houses are ill equipped to generate enough for themselves let alone for an EV, the grid is vital. Power companies forcing self generators off grid (poor financial incentives) is crazy long-term. As you say, the market will correct..... soon we hope!
  4. this article is the most complete and focused i've seen so far, they even take into consideration the dirt under the concrete pad that can no longer absorb co2 as it has a bloody great windmill on top of it. ive heard people saying a wind turbine can pay back in 5-8 months, this more complete analysis puts it at 3.5 years. this machine with a life expectancy of 25 years goes carbon neutral in 3.5, that's pretty awesome. compared to a fossil fuel plant that still uses far more raw materials to build, and then slips further and further from neutral all the time its in operation, it's a no brainer. http://www.windaction.org/posts/7149-a-guide-to-calculating-the-carbon-dioxide-debt-and-payback-time-for-wind-farms#.VaUnX_mqpBe there is a huge amount of misinformation out there, the established industries have very deep pockets and have some of the best spin and bullshit artists at their disposal, however unlike during the unraveling of the cigarette industry we now have the internet, so research like mad and check lots of sources. the truth will out.
  5. two big problems with nuclear, firstly the standard one it still produces waste, it replaces one pollution with another, it also requires fuel which involves mining. It will fix the immediate problem, but if one seeks clean energy there are better much cheaper more sustainable ways to create it. secondly safety, a modern nuclear reactor is very safe, but the highest majority of reactors are old with known design flaws. were these reactors first commissioned with these flaws? of course not, we didn't know, this is the problem... retrofitting old design reactors is basically impossible, due to the nature of the reactor vessel which is inaccessible for milennia, then the cost. no reactor ever has a major redesign, too costly too dangerous, so we just adapt as best we can, with the odd chernobyl, three mile and fukishima. this post should have some balance, ill try to find the last time a wind turbine caught fire and caused the evacuation of a city for generations, or a solar panel explosion that needed billions of dollars to clean up.
  6. most of the details focus on 4 degrees (we are currently tracking for over 4) being the point that the oceans will stop being a carbon sink and start to release their stores, at this point the carbonisation of the atmosphere will snowball. this will sadly put action beyond our control. 6 degrees is said to be the point where most land is desert and the oceans (our lifeblood in essence) are wastelands. Respectfully, my problem with your question is not so much finding proof of this claim, as finding proof that will satisfy you. Is there a particular group of scientists or a certain publication or nationality you trust? I can try to find a link if you like.
  7. hey if we're wrong whats the worst that can happen? a slightly nicer planet to live on. if you're wrong in a few short years we'll slip past the point of no return, we wont have a planet capable of sustaining life. Even without definitive evidence, the smart move is to do all we can to mitigate this, we wont get a second chance.
  8. A new centre for research lol Why did they stop it? They want to be known as a center for academic excellence, one that works in scientific consensus. How is hosting a climate change denier (when the global scientific concusses is so overwhelmingly in agreement of anthropogenic climate change) a good thing? They gave him the arse because the man is a paid mouth, a fool. As such all he can add to the discussion is the Government spin, which anyone with an ounce of sense knows is lunacy. We can only hope no other academic institution will give him a podium, however it seems the government are out to kill renewables all the same, I guess we'll see how that pans out. So far this government seem unstoppable, breaking promises all over the show and still in power, makes you wonder what's even the point in voting. how much is the fine, if you feel the system is a crock of arse, and dont want to encourage them? Nuclear? Renewables and storage are far cheaper and safer. (Before we do the baseload thing, do a little research )
  9. a few facts to consider, a somewhat simplified little climatology refresher i guess, wind is caused by temperature gradients. air moves from cold to hot on the surface then rises, its distance from the radiant heat of earth causes it to cool and sink this coupled with the earths rotation causes primary circulation currents. if there are more extreme differences in heat this causes more extreme wind on the surface. hot air holds more moisture than cold, the energy released by this moisture, the subsequent moving current of air cooling to clouds and release of heat draws up more moisture. more moisture in clouds = more energy release in clouds = bigger clouds more extreme rain and storms. these events associated with cold weather are ultimately caused by heat, have you ever asked yourself why it is generally so calm and peaceful at 4 or 5am, before the sun comes up; or why rain storms on the heat equator are so regular at certain times of year you can almost set your watch by them? forget the murdoch press and the flat earthers, use your eyes your senses, learn a little about climatology then ask yourself what, in light of this new found knowledge will happen if you turn up the heat in the system? for those who need videos to learn, i can highly recommend orbit earth's extraordinary journey made by the BBC, its available on the torrents and chunks on youtube. it's a great watch
  10. thats the way we started too, its good, do however bear in mind that one does not simply take a house in a few days here in australia, such things tend to take weeks. i dont know what they do, maybe have meetings drink coffee, doughnuts..... suffice to say, even when you're touring in the van, you should spend a little time getting on the phone to get things lined up it's the perfect start, enjoy
  11. safety, and speed or red light cameras are not exclusive. there should be a sign on the intersection highlighting how it is one of the most dangerous in the state. many safe drivers may occasionally speed and almost go thru red. it's been shown on typical red light camera intersections t-bone crashes have reduced by less than 20% but arse ending has gone up by almost 22% * so lets not go all holier than thou, these things are piggy banks plain and simple. the victoria plod should try pulling over some of those clowns who hog the middle or fast lane and fine them, or maybe cars with exhausts louder than 96db, meh list goes on! * http://time.com/3643077/red-light-cams-rear-end-collisions-chicago/
  12. I am not suggesting what you should do, but I urge you to read this article. It highlights a few common misconceptions about how the debt/collection agency etc work. http://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2011/nov/15/debt-agencies-economy A bit of an eye opener for many.
  13. i've complained about vaya before, not the service so much as the customer service. however recently when i've called they've answered in a reasonable time and been very helpful. i guess there has been some investment going on! optus on the cheap
  14. these guys are good, we used them when we rocked up great place to start. http://www.whistleout.com.au/
  15. i had the option of novating, i chose not to as the interest on the loan would be front loaded, and if i changed employer i would have to refinance! it would mean i'd never pay the damn thing off! check all the fine print if you decide to.

    New Mod

    huh? yeah, congratulations
  17. means the shorts of hope can stay out more than one day! get in! might even be worth a holiday, infact sounds bloody bliss is this **** hole freezing aussie excuse for a house! sun cream!
  18. almost certainly, thats the thing with a global economy. just a crying shame we have a government that thinks its more important to effectively legalise the rape of a child than to keep the country competitive. oh well, FIorFO I guess.
  19. the Chinese make everything that is powered by electricity in Australia, as much as it sucks why not let them fix it too?
  20. thanks for highlighting that, you'd get the impression from the media that this is the only one and it's huge. i wonder why this one is thought of differently... or maybe its just a slow news day. the slew in population towards Melbourne does seem strange given 'the word on the street' i guess the words wrong or the statistics are based on flawed data. time will tell i guess. the whole argument of fear based vs logic based leadership is another interesting angle, fear does seem to be a more persuasive argument thats for sure! all the time the boy murdoch can bring it, and the reason is absent, for better or worse, it's the leadership we're likely to have.
  21. saw a couple of container ships leaving Melbourne last week, both next to empty; companies closing or scaling down all over the show. outsourcing Australian manufacturing obviously saves cash, but i wonder if Australia is really ready for a services based economy?
  22. at least you'll know what god will do, the politicians in both major parties say one thing and do another. Whats the bloody point in even bothering to vote for that? I'll vote green too, for two reasons, if they get in, it will be such a shock, as such they are less likely to be 'brought' by lobbyists; and if they don't, it's a protest vote as the main parties are totally corrupt! to take a look at the rest of the world aus could do with some green anyways, every year we don't we slip further and further behind the rest of the world, not great in a global economy.
  23. I hope you are right, but fear you are misinformed. the commodities you speak of are in decline, the government grossly overestimated chinese and indian demand. the manufacturing sector could help, but they are in decline too, houses are overpriced, interest rates are dropping, lots of recession indicators. the country seems to be folding in on itself, relying on it's own citizens spending and debt to weather the storm, is now the time to rack up personal debt? lets see how we go eh? I really hope I am wrong, I truly do! We hope to build soon!

    MH370 found?

strange thing to say, if we knew where it was supposed to be ,we'd have found the bugger!
  25. Keep the pommie passport, I hope I'm wrong, but how can a government do what this government have done and not plunge a country into recession? Prop up industries in structural decline, Close factories that have the potential to keep people in work, Actively demonize industries that are popular all over the rest of the world, Cut funding from the very institutions that could make Australia prosper. As a country we could be running the show, instead we are at the back eating raw onions and being laughed at. It's not all bad though, our 1% are just dandy, even in the last few days their rorting of the super system has been protected. It makes ya proud
