  1. Everything you import as personal effects and household belongings under a year old can be examined for customs duty fees. There is no threshold of $1000. If you are buying something off the internet from overseas then the threshold applies. If it's valued at $1001 including shipping then that is the taxable value, not just the $1 over.
  2. I've taken all sorts of tools on many different airlines worldwide. (Usual electronics servicing stuff, screwdrivers, sockets, spanners, all the usual hand tools, cordless drills, test equipment etc etc). Just put it in your checked baggage and try and stay within the weight limit. Spread it amongst all the luggage if there are several passengers. Excess baggage is a rip off. :-)
  3. It didn't cause any issues for me or my agent. Might be a waste of time anyway if all your documents are in order; the next (and only) update could be the visa granted notice. :-)
  4. Can't you just create an account for yourself on the immi.gov.au site, and just import your application into your account? You just need the case reference number. That's what I did. That allowed me to check the status from time to time. It didn't make any real difference though, as there were no status updates between "in progress" and "finalised". I guess the status updates other than that would be for those who maybe require to provide additional info.
  5. +1 for the Captiva 7. A lot of car for the money. I previously had a Dodge Journey, very roomy but gutless. Now renamed the Fiat Freemont and with different engine options, it might be worth a look.
  6. To answer your question, no, you don't all have to arrive together.
  7. I'm in Vic, insurance and roadworthiness procedures are different in NSW, so I can't really comment on what you should prepare for.
  8. In the grand scheme of moving an entire household and a family of 5 to Australia, the wee bit of VAT/GST on a couple of white goods wasn't even on our radar at the time. It was a fairly insignificant piece of the whole move. I appreciate that others may wish to claim back everything that they can. However, my post was specific to the question about moving belongings into Australia. The link I posted didn't mention any threshold for the value of personal effects, only that belongings under a year old will be assessed for payment of customs duty and GST. http://www.customs.gov.au/faq/Migrants.asp
  9. And unlike in the UK it's quite common to see motorcycles with fairly high mileage on them! I steered clear of a lot of bikes here because of that, but in the end I just accepted that it is just the way it is! Got rid of my low mileage Suzi in the UK for just over £1100. A couple of years later I bought exactly the same bike here in Melbourne, much higher mileage, hasn't been looked after as well as my oldie, and I paid about 3 times it's value compared to UK prices. And I got it cheap 'cos it had no other bidders (eBay). Sellers still want top dollar for a pretty old, shabby, poorly maintained, high km motorbike. Same for cars really! I had to stop myself from doing price comparisons cos it was just driving me mental!
  10. From the same link I posted previously; Certain items are expressly excluded form the definition of “personal and household effects” and are subject to other requirements. These include: Motor vehicles or motor cycles Caravans, boats and trailers Aircraft Machinery, plant and equipment Fur apparel Alcohol and tobacco products Sounds like a pretty good going-away party though!
  11. http://www.customs.gov.au/faq/Migrants.asp "Household and personal goods owned and used for less than 12 months will be assessed for the payment of customs duty and GST. Receipts/invoices will be requested. Depreciation rates may apply according to the length of ownership." We declared a brand new fridge and a freezer valued at £179 each. Under 12 months old but never used. Manufacturers wrapping removed by the shippers, and re-wrapped in soft packaging. We were charged the GST for the importation of those.
  12. Best not to compare bike prices in Aus with UK prices! :-)
  13. Application lodged 11 April, Medicals and the revised form 80 shortly after. Medical referral report lodged a few weeks after that (Cancer diagnosis in Feb 2012) Visa approval 29/7/14 We're in Melbourne. Family of 5. MA in Perth. Lodged with Parramatta. Transition stream from 457. Very happy today; I had been ready for bad news due to previous cancer surgery. All good for now though!
  14. Ours required form 80 for each person on the application. So a lot of the info is just duplication. For dates, use the stamp dates in your passport for travel which required an entry/exit stamp. For dates which didn't require a stamp (eg European travel on Uk passport), or for any travel on an old passport which you have since chucked away...... guess the dates.
  15. Are you working overseas for your Australian employer? Visiting their clients or working on projects or suchlike?
  16. Temporary visa holders don't need to change their licence to an Aussie licence. Do it at a later date when it's more convenient if that's what you want to do; it's a useful ID method. Uk driving licence, proof of address, funds.
  17. A suggestion is only going to be exactly that. Don't pin your visa application to a suggestion. I just renewed mine. It took 2 weeks. I'd guess a new application will take considerably longer than that.
  18. Hopefully we'll hear something soon. Application lodged 11 April, medicals and the revised form 80 shortly after. Medical referral report lodged a few weeks after that. We're in Melbourne. MA in Perth. Lodged with Parramatta.
  19. It can be difficult shipping mobile phones by air due to the batteries. Carriers have quite strict rules about shipping mobile phones.
  20. The high temp today was 11 in Watsonia. A wee bit breezy so it felt cooler than 11. T-shirt and a thin hoody weather!!! You still see plenty of folks walking round in shots and flip flops! I've acclimatised a bit too much, so it's jeans for me in Winter. Forecast temps in the mid-teens next week. Evenings are getting lighter! Spring is on its way. [emoji4]
  21. If you and your employer meet the requirements for ENS then go for that. If you are happy having a temporary visa with no long term security, go for the 457. Your employer has many criteria to meet before they can sponsor anyone. Sounds like both you and your employer need professional advice from a migration agent.
