  1. For the kids, they went mental, while I spent the rest of the day hunting for my tool box to put things together, only to find it had been put in with the 'Kids Clothes' box..... hay ho all good though!
  2. On every thread I can find a post from a whinging pom, and sometimes a lot more. If its not the weather, its how **** Perth is, how your going to get killed the next time you step out the door, its how **** the UK is, its how long you have to work over here, its how far you have to live from everywhere, its the expensive beer, its whinge, whinge whinge. While giving people a heads up over something that could affect them is useful, no doubting that, but there is no need to go on and on and on. If you have moved back to the UK and don't intend to move back, and you feel the need to stick your two pence worth in for rubbishing Australia then leave the site and go and annoy other people. I have been off here for around two months since settling over here in lovely Perth (SOR), and as soon as I get back in to reading the threads (not from MBTTUK!) it just gets you down. It makes coming back on here less and less appealing.... Everyone just needs to just chill out. rant over That is all, thank you.
  3. RVP, sorry mate I can't offer you any advice. But I am sure HMRC would love to hear from you!........:policeman:
  4. All sorted, nothing broken. We are 100% happy with John Mason and their partner over here Wridgeways. JM were the cheapest out of the 5 or so quotes we got when we were in the UK and have been excellent throughout. Cheers JTC
  5. You could always look at the minimum wages as well, Oz $19.56 is the min for I think an over 20 year old (http://www.fairwork.gov.au/pay/national-minimum-wage/pages/default.aspx) UK £6.19 again assuming over 21 (https://www.gov.uk/national-minimum-wage-rates) I'm sure there is further maths equations to compare, you cannot obviously ever have an exact formula, but there probably is a way of working it out approx. And I suppose time will tell as well!!!
  6. So in about 4 hours John Mason shall deliver (Courtesy of their Oz partner Wridgways) our 505 ft3 of stuff! lets hope it is all in one piece! I shall report my findings!!!
  7. No, but if you use the 2.7 method as above the £35,000 x 2.7 = $94,500 but it is just a rough, unproven theory of mine!
  8. I can second what you said mate. I had one recruitment agent say to me that she didn't put me forward for a job because she said the wage would be too low for me... I said I will be the one to judge that! and also (as Bensdad said) there is this 'WA exp essential' plastered everywhere..... it is frustrating, but you have to keep plugging away.
  9. there is another way of doing it, taking the ave UK wage 25k, work out your wage in % terms diff, so say your on £30k which is 20% above the UK ave, then if the Oz ave is $68k then 20% above that would be $81,600, so if you used this method; £30k would = $81k Therefor 81/30=2.7 So £ = 2.7 AUD Which would mean £1,000 = $2,700 A UK £25,000 should mean your looking for at least $67,500 and a UK £50,000 should = $135,000 Swings and roundabouts....
  10. Ok, let me think it through, :skeptical: What does go on in your head?!?
  11. So, I live just on the Ghetto side then!! So far Ham hill has been good to us, we are moving in 6 months westwards.... (But not as far as the Indian ocean, but close enough!) Personally for us we had to be close to Freo Location location location... I like Ham Hill, and have relatives in Coolbellup (or Coobiaco as they call it!!), you can get a huge block for around $400k, peanuts! plus it will soon get zoning and is getting trendier, before xmas there was not a single house for sale in Coolbellup, they were all sold. it is also close to that huge hospital they are building (one of the biggest in the world I hear???) So if you want a cheap upcoming area that is only going to get more expensive and is still close to Freo I would choose there if money was an issue and you wanted a solid house on a large plot, (no weather board cottages there I am afraid) But, until you drive round and get a feel for the place you can never really know, but make sure you stay SOR!!!!
  12. Is the local Government paying you to recruit people!!!!
  13. This is very subjective, Move to London and these two 'Cons' will be crossed off your list.... Close to EU yes, but how often do you go there? I have been to a lot of the EU countries (lived for 2 years in Germany) and feel no real need to go back to mainland Europe. So just cos your close, if you never go then what benefit is it to you (except bank rolling Greece, Spain, Ireland....) :twitcy: If you can't stand the heat then if you did return to Oz you ought to consider a place with a cooler climate, i.e Albany of somewhere similar on the east coast if that's where you want to be...
  14. Davey, your contradicting yourself, you said on one hand you have seen 2.2 times earned in Oz then in the next post you say £30k = $90k? there is a big diff from $66k to $90k....
  15. Jaffa, The exchange rate has no bearing on the cost of living.
  16. hi mate, your using the XE exchange rate, you cannot use this as it does not give a true representation of the cost of living etc... the ave wage in the UK is circa £25k and in oz the average is something like $68k (or so I hear)
  17. Hola all, what is the method for converting wages to see if what you are on is any good? (yes waiting for the comments from the smart Alex's 'can you live of it? then its enough'....) was it £1 should = $2.2 so a UK wage of £30,000 should = $66,000 SO, a $50,000 wage is pants and a $100,000 is pretty good.... this is just a ball park method to see if what I am on is actually good to support the wife and two sprogs. Cheers guys, JTC
  18. Hi all, Just though I would let you know that I managed to land a role as a CA with a Tier 2 Commercial builder (SOR) and I start Monday! Pretty stoked (not a fan of that word but it does sum up how I feel!) at the job and 'Package' offered to me, granted I had some help from friends pointing me in the direction of who to speak to! but I suppose that's how it goes, if you know someone then it always helps, irrespective of what line of work you are in! I may have been shown the door, but you have to convince them to let you in. (what a I going on about?!?!) Will keep you posted! off to bed now as its knocking on 1am....
  19. Hi, Firstly you can find your white card online course here http://aveling.com.au/safety-courses/white-card-wa-construction-course-online.htm (Steer clear of Blue dog training, it looks like amateur hour!) Secondly, ship tools,if your taking a container, make sure he cleans them thoroughly!!! Thirdly, stop the drug taking,:twitcy:, it depends who he works for but I am due to have my medical next week and another guy I know who works for the gov also gets drugged tested, so steer clear of it..... Gooood luck. JTC
  20. just checked out the bluedog one, its $90, go for the one I did, I actually think it was very good and only 65$. I should have the card in a couple of days as well.
  21. Funnily enough I just finished mine on http://aveling.com.au/safety-courses/white-card-wa-construction-course-online.htm its like AU$65 and yes you can do it from good old blighty, and they will post there as well. it is easy, like the CSCS, as always common sense prevails!
  22. Evening all, been AWOL for sometime as settling in to a new life in Freo! SO reading this thread just now and this morning I got offered a great job, and I am so relieved to have finally found work, I have been out of work for just under two months (granted we were travelling for one of those months!) and I have never been unemployed that long since I left school at 16. Now where am I going with this. As I have been right in the deep end of job hunting, and speaking to a few friends who are also looking for work I can see that (in Construction only) 457 chaps are getting let go by employers in favor of those perm staff when the redundancies happen. if you are on a 457 it is getting hard to get a sponsor as there is virtually always someone on a 176 for example who can work freely. It is a competitive marketplace There are however more jobs coming on now Xmas and Jan are well behind us I have had no neg feedback of reactions from tru blues over me being a Pom, in fact quite the opposite. that old adage of its not what you know its who you know has never rung truer for me in my life, and I doubt it will ever again. I am sure some will disagree but as someone who is on the front line, so to speak, this is the general consensus I get from job hunters and those recruitment agents. Cheers JTC
  23. We have been in Perth for a grand total of 5 days and I love the fact that roads that you are approaching are indicated by a sign telling you what road it is, some 50m before you get to each junction. my life is now complete.
