  1. Thanks everyone. The Ten year old has settled down well and made many friends. The 13 year is struggling. I agree that we should not force friendships on them but we should be encouraging them and be creating the environment for them to meet people of their own age. I think the already established groups at her school are very hard to be a part of. I know it will happen in due course but until then it is a little upsetting to see them so unhappy at this point.
  2. Hi Moved over from England back in January 2013. Really enjoying the outdoor life and have not looked back since. We are currently renting in the Vines (Swan Valley). Life is good. The only area of concern is finding friends for both our children locally. They are really missing their friends back in the UK. We used to live in small village where they had many friends nearby. I have 2 girls aged 10 & 13 and would really like them to start finding new friendships which would make the transition a lot easier. Any suggestions on this would be much appreciated. Thanks:biggrin:
  3. Moving to Oz 7th Jan-2013 When getting car Insurance in Oz does no claims bonus in UK count for anything? Cheers
  4. Hi Chortlepuss..Yes we could do this but then I imagine the picture starts to get very complicated releasing equity would mean paying more in interest payments from the uk side less the interest received on the released capital and any tax relief from the Oz tax office. We do have a flexible mortgage and we could release equity as we have only £500 left to pay on the mortgage (just avoiding paying any redemption charges) a good position to be in though. I guess we would need an accountant to assess the net implications.
  5. Hi NickyNook.. Yes, we are coming over on a permanent visa. If neither of us are working for a period of time we are receiving rent from uk i.e say $1350 AUD / Month what would the tax position be in Oz? Thanks
  6. We are looking to rent our property in the UK when we move to Oz in Jan-13. I believe we can apply for UK tax exemption via the NLR1 form and then any tax implications can then be dealt with in Oz. If we are using this income to pay rent or offset against a mortgage for the family home in oz (have not decided on rent or buy yet) can we also apply for an exemption in Australia? If someone could clarify this it would be very much appreciated. Cheers:ssign4::ssign4:
  7. Can somebody explain? Prior to the annoucement of the rate cut the GBP/AUD was 1.544 and then when the rate cut came it dropped to 1.539! I know a good portion of this cut was already factored in prior to the announcement but Istill would not have expected for the rate to drop! These money markets can be so irrational!
  8. "There is also the problem that a lot of places will not allow you to have an account if you are not resident in the UK" What is the reason for this?
  9. We are moving to Oz in Jan-2013 and we not likely to exchange our money until we are happy with the ex-rate or reach a frustration point of no return (which ever comes sooner). We are moving on a 176 Family sponsored Visa. (1) What are my saving options as a result of not being resident in the UK in terms of tax etc.? (Would want instant access) (2) If and when I exchange at a rate later that was better than the rate was when I left would I be liable to be taxed on the Delta? Any help / guidance would be much appreciated. Cheers
  10. Steve Keen has some useful insights although a tad gloomy, but a very interesting read!
  11. Being looking at numerous threads some are saying that we could have more QE when the Bank of England meet in November this would not be good news for the pound! Iron Ore prices one of Oz big exports has depreciated considerably from the dizzy heights of $180 to around $100, this will really hurt! There will be many twists & turns along the way!
  12. I think we have found our oracle!!!
  13. Hi Jatkins Yes this could happen i.e Interest rates reduce further which improves the ex-rate but this makes credit more affordable in oz and therefore stimulates housing demand and prices go up! But housing demand is also is dependent on peoples confidence in the economy and not just based on how affordable credit is!! I would love it if we hit short term $1.6 and longer term i.e 12 months 1.8 / 1.9. We need an oracle! We too are moving to Oz in 2013 Jan-13 (Perth) and we would look to rent but no longer than 12 months.
  14. I know it's really hard to predict even the so called experts cannot predict what will happen with any great deal of accuracy due to the amount of variables - 'chaos theory' springs to mind. I know many people who moved to oz 1-2 years ago who have just bitten the bullet in order to settle down - I do not blame them! But as the time is very close for us we would like to listen to the arguments for and against achieving $1.6 & $1.9. I think I may be becoming slightly obsessive.
  15. We will be moving to Perth in Jan-13. I have 2 Questions and would like to couch people's opinions:- (1) Will we see $1.60 = £1 from now until the end of Dec-12 (2) Will we see $1.9 = £1 from now until the end of by Dec-13. I know there are many variables that could swing the ex-rate either way i.e interest rates, QE, etc. Cheers:chatterbox:
  16. Thanks for your breakdown of bills very helpful!! We are looking at The Vines area or development at Brigadoon do you know these areas?? Our kids are 10 &13 and thinking about Ellenbrook or Swan Schools. You may regret starting this thread you're not going to get rid of me now
  17. Hi Could you give a rough guide to bills, shopping etc. Lovely to hear from someone so positive about the move. The only thing we are concerned about really is the finances as we are quite comfortable here. Thanks again.
  18. Hi We are moving to Perth in January 2013 and although I already have family there and have visited many times I would love to hear from someone who has made the move. We are looking to move to ?The Vines or possibly Brigadoon do you know anything about these areas. Also how the cost of living varies to UK. Or anything that you think may be useful. Thanks
  19. Hi Love Shoes - Any chance you could send me the details of this company?
  20. Great to hear from someone who has made the move. We are going 7/1/13 to Perth feeling excited but a bit jittery too. My OH hands in his notice today a bit scary. We have no jobs to go to yet but are looking. Anyway good to hear its all working out well for you  Good wishes for your future.
  21. My family and I are heading out to Perth in early Jan-13. I have registered on SEEK and I am getting Jobs through which is good! Although it is too early to apply I am doing so any way in order to get my name out there, and who knows? I would also be interested if anyone has some good agency names that I can register with in the Perth area particularly with an emphasis on Purchasing. Cheers
  22. Yup this not suprising..this will improve / strengthen the £ by a few points thinking £1.54/55 by close of play Monday. Let the games begin!
  23. 1.8 I dream about 1.8! This would be good . Iron ore prices & Coke prices are at lowest levels since 2009 and still dropping. If a new price equilibrium is reached (considerably lower) then there should be a tipping point i.e reduced investment as a result of diminished (ROI), impact on employement and then house prices and ex-rates. The impact on ex-rates would be a good thing for their other exports in terms making them more competitive. It is not healthy to have a high dependency in one or two industries. Next week PMI result from China and interest rate decision from Oz. Should be interesting. Not to mention whats kicking off in Europe! What a mess!....No more ranting from me.
