  1. Fuel has been cheaper on the Gold Coast than in Brisbane for at least the last year, due to 7-11 undercutting the others, maybe its now re-balancing.
  2. If you think Adelaide's quiet its like Las Vegas in comparison to Perth
  3. There's a mob of them we see every day near our house in Hope Island - not exactly rural!
  4. Just curious, why do you think it will improve in Feb? (I'm IT QLD but thankfully in work)
  5. Thats a better plan I think, lots of areas to explore and better doing it in person. For a hotel I can reccomend the Meriton in Southport, we spent 6 weeks there when looking for our place and have been back a few times too.
  6. There is very little IT work outside of the cities, unless you mean in Manilla. Maybe the occasional job for a mining company (although I don't think most mine sites would fit your bill). The Cities are comparatively small, and suburbia goes on for seemingly huge distances so you're probably in for a largeish commute if you want to live rural and work in IT.
  7. I do for one, and lived within this renting in Sydney and SE-QLD and also when we bought our mortgage is less than 1/3 of income. This is 2 adults, no kids, when I was only one working and when we both are. With the extra expense of children I would be even more reluctant to exceed it.
  8. Sorry to hear it and I have to say this surprises me, with the Gold price hitting 1-year highs I thought they'd be ramping up if anything. Do you know the reason?
  9. Interesting the quote only talks about white collar unemployment, when mining unemployment ramps up it will be a much bigger story (I mean Iron Ore & Coal, VS as you're in Gold Mining I'm sure you'll be fine). P.S. Loved the comment "Working class man of Gosnells Posted at 10:23 AM Today Take that yuppies, that'l theach you for wasteing company time bringing in cupcakes for co workers birthbay's and sitting round chatting and being useless." I'm sure that guy will not see things quite the same way if he looses his job.
  10. Why Molendinar particularly, I've driven through a few times and it seems OK but plenty of other places to look which may be better placed for the coast and/or things to do?
  11. Don't let my reply stop you from enquiring, a quick look at the surfside website shows this http://www.surfside.com.au/sit_employment.htm simple fact is that unemployment on the GC is higher than average but that doesn't mean you won't be able to get a job, everyone's different. I commute to Brisbane because in my line of work there's very little, and wages are much lower on the coast but that's not the same for every job.
  12. We bought a new Forrester 3 years ago and its been good. Just now thinking about novating a replacement for it, toss up between one of the new Grand Cherokee's or a Prado, I want the Jeep but understand the Prado may hold value better, I just don't like the look of them!
  13. The local bus company is called Surfside, no idea about your question but in general unemployment is high on the Gold Coast.
  14. Lol! The Government job cuts are bad news for those affected and who knows, he probably has cut too far too fast but its far from all doom & gloom, I'm getting reglar calls from agencies about (IT) work but I'm happy where I am for now. I moved here from Sydney to take up an attractive job offer and my wife got a job up here in about 3 weeks (both in Brisbane) and she also regularly hears about alternative work if she ever chooses to move. I also know people who worked in Govt and hear that there was a lot of dead wood, folk on big pay doing very little (IT again) so there is a balance somewhere there but again, I think CN can't be trusted and is feathering his own nest in some way. As for expensive watches, there's plenty around already, and cars, and houses, and boats. Qld feels pretty prosperous in large parts.
  15. Public transport on the Gold Coast is poor so while I don't know the specific area but you're likely to be looking at infrequent and slow buses at best to Robina (prob stopping at about 7PM) although it doesn't look far to drive. As for driving to Coomera you're looking at the Pacific Motorway which I drive every day and it's heaving with traffic from 5AM but that part is usually travelling quickly (unless there's roadworks) probably 30 mins drive either way, so an hours round trip on a very busy motorway twice a day if you have to drop her off/pick up, better to drive to Robina or Nerang and get the train from there, although its frequently standing room only. TBH with those two destinations in mind I'd go for somewhere near a railway station, which Merrimac isn't, there's plenty of other houses.
  16. 5 more diggers killed today, worst loss for the Aus military since Vietnam (and what a worthwhile adventure that was, not) I'm no peacenic and certainly not against the military but why is Australia (and England) involved in this unwinable war, and is it worth the huge sacrifice?
  17. I quite like Runaway Bay but the Gold Coast is a big & varied place, schools are all pretty good from what I hear - somewhere near work would be a good start.
  18. If its decent stuff and you're planning on staying ship everything you can.
  19. - The words "hotel" and "pub" are interchangeable. - 90% of all TV ads feature one of about 5 actors/actresses, this approaches 100% for household cleaning products. - Root is pronounced RAUT, unless you mean root(v), mistakes cause amusement/embarrassment. - Early settlers consisted of Australian convicts and English Red Coats, even if they arrived on the same boat, according to films on the subject they had their respective national accents from the moment they set foot on Australian soil.

    hope island

I've lived around Hope Island for just over a year, it is a very nice place to live. If you mean Brisbane CBD here's a thread I wrote when I started living there, we have now bought a house on the water in Hope Island and still do the commute daily, along with many tens of thousand others! http://www.pomsinoz.com/forum/queensland/125754-three-months-commuting-gold-coast-bris-my-impression.html If you mean Gold Coast CBD (Southport) its about 20 mins but public transport is bad, basically and irregular bus taking up to an hour, depending on which part of HI you are in.
  21. I believe it is, we looked at Cleveland but settled on the Gold Coast as we like a bit more stuff going on, and the commute isn't much longer from where we live at Hope Island.
  22. For Brisbane its down to the cost of hotels, cabbie told me the other day there's a shortage, don't know if he's right but I was amazed at hotel costs here, way more expensive than Sydney for instance.
  23. Having lived there and sorry to sound harsh but on $100k you won't be able to buy much in Sydney, unless you have a humongous deposit and/or like living in a small, run down house or apartment in a not-great (maybe terrible) part of Sydney miles from the CBD. There really are some horrible dives for sale/rent in Sydney at undeliverable prices. In that respect QLD, VIC, WA and just about everywhere else are better. TBH, it doesn't matter what the market does, the above is unlikely to change by a big enough amount to make a difference.
  24. No problem, I did the initial post because I found it worked well and thought others may find it useful. In terms of speed just occasionally progs do start playing almost immediately, think its down to how busy the VPN provider is. I've done speed tests and I'm getting about 1.2Mbps through the VPN and over 5 direct to my ISP, once playing its usually enough to see the whole show without issues.
  25. The PS3 should have the IP of your mac and the port the from squidman. Foxyproxy should have 127.0.0.1 (or localhost would prob work) and also the port. The PS3 connects to the proxy across the LAN, foxyproxy connects via the loopback interface and never gets sent across the physical network as its running on the same server as the proxy daemon. If you mean its slow in that it takes a long time to start playing with the spinning circle I get that too, I think its that the PS3 buffers quite a bit of data before it starts playing. Your local network has likely got a lot more bandwidth than your internet connection.
