1. Hi We arrived from Ireland about 2 weeks ago and after seeing so many houses and the cabin fever of the serviced apartment we finally took a house in Stanhope Gardens/Parklea out of more desperation than design! We are a bit unsure about the area but the house and estate and pool are v nice so it will do for the summer! Anyway we would love to hear from others in the area, or even far away to meet up with/without kids for coffee/lunches/bbq or what ever PM me if there is anyone about regards Karl and Susan
 2. HI, we are a coming to castle hill in the next 4 weeks from ireland and would love to meet up with some others in the area. Could you include me in mailing if other outings are organised thanks so much karl
 3. Best of luck Spencer with the move, if it is any help, you are not alone... August 27th 21.00 Heathrow T3 we will be boarding the Qantas A380 for the beginning of our adventure. I think the excitment builds and so a little do the nerves - are we doing the right thing, why are we doing this, what if.......but i guess all of us on PIO have one thing in common is that we are all looking for something more, a new life, an adventure, want to do more with our lives, new people, new places....we all have our reasons...would sure be nice to meet up with some in Oz for a beer and share the experiences. Anyway Spencer, have a great journey and adventure.....to quote Morgan Freeman in the Shawshaw Redemption "I am so excited I hardly sit still or hold a thought in my head, I guess is the feeling only a free person has, a person at the start of a long journey, whos conclusion is uncertain" Karl
 4. Hi First Timers We too are moving to sydney soon (27th Aug!) from Dublin. We think we have settled on the Hills region, probably Castle Hill or Baulkham Hills. We too would far rather a nice detached house in a nice area with nice neighbours than a unit close to the beach, where perhaps the commnunity was more transient. I love the beach but a nice house with a pool and the beach every weekend would do me just fine. Good luck with the decsion and the move Karl
 5. Hi Bennyboy Our things have just left and we went with crown. So far we have found them very professional and am very confident about our goods getting there on time. An important point that we only realised after, which can save thousands is the packing..... I had loads of our stuff (about 80%) already packed into IKEA boxes which i knew were 3 cubic feet, so it was easy to get a good accurate estimate of how much we were bringing and what it would cost, which was about 400 cu ft. When the guys finished packing they said that we had 600 cu feet, which i couldnt understand but it all came down to the packing. We let them re-pack our stuff, which they did in a really professionally and secure way but the problem that causes is that it greatly increases the volume...and the price. Crown were really good and accommodating and allowed me to go to the warehouse with them and one of their guys re-packed loads of it to get the volume down. For example we had bikes going, which went into big bike boxes, which take up huge amount of space, far bigger than the bike itself, so we stuffed the bike box with kids toys, linen etc to reduce the number of other boxes and to use the space better. so i guess in short, your goods can be packed really professionally which will take up loads of space or if you are happy to open a bike box in Oz and your duvets and towels to fall out it will be far more efficient. You will need to have that conversation with the packers when they arrive, not when the packing is finished (like us!) would recommend Crown hope this helps Karl

 8. Hi Shelley for what it is worth, we were there on holiday last year and soooo loved it. would definately like to live there and my NSW state sponsorsip would still be ok there as i think it is on the Qld border but unfortunately jobs pull us to sydney enjoy life there karl
 9. HI Susan Thanks so much for this information, it is very helpful. Guess we will have to just view and apply for lots. We are looking at the castle hill area but i guess we will view and apply for properties also in baulkham hills and kellyville, i think they are both fairly close. It is strage what you say about no kids being around. I wonder if you get them more in the newer areas such as kellyville where there seems to be a lot more newer houses. You seemed to be settled in well there, how long are you there now? It is very exciting to go but now and then we get a panic attack and wonder will it be ok! lol I would love to fast forward and to be in a house there and have a job...get al the uncertainly out of the way!lol glad to hear you have met lots of friends, are they Aussies? I have heard there are lots off Brttish and Irish there. Thanks again for your help...will try not to pester you too much! lol regards karl
 10. Hi Soozan Thanks so much for the response, we have heard that castle hill is nice. We arrive on August 27th and have a 6 year old girl. can i ask you a couple of things please? i have noticed that people get a serviced apartment initially but most people seem to take ages in serviced apartments. I saw someone that was 8 weeks in a serviced apartment. Do you know what this is? Is it a long/difficult process to get a rental? We have looked at lots of rentals in castle hill, some of which are on the net for ages, so i get the impression so not sure how much demand there is. Basiclly we are trying to figure out how long we will need to stay in serviced apts. We are hoping to find an area where there are plenty of kids playing outside, although i read somewhere that kids dont really play outside, maybe the newer areas....just feel if there are kids outside our daughter will be out playing with them before we even unpack! I imagine it will be harder if we need to drive to a park to hope to find friends for her thanks again for you help Karl
 11. hi all We were looking at this area but now are considering Castle Hill....any advice on this? thank you Karl
 12. hi guys we are moving from Dublin to Sydney on August 27th. Got quote from RAS removals of €3000 for 450 cubic feet and about €3500 with crown...by the sounds of it you would all recommend crown. Crown did say they would pack everything....even though i have everything packed already! We have 12 weeks from next weekend to the time we get there. Both companie sais up to 12 weeks. Bit concerned that as it is going groupage we might be waiting for others also....what timeframe have you been told thanks karl
 13. HI Mark thanks so much for that. Sorry I am only seeing your response now, it is really useful information. hope you are getting on well there, will keep in touch regards karl
 14. Hi all can i ask a stupid question, i think we are missing something here. Why are people spending so long in temporary accommodation? I saw one poster saying that they will be there for 10 weeks as they are waiting for the stuff to arrive. Is it not cheaper and better to have the goods shipping in loads of time and have them sent to a storage facility close to where you are going to rent. In Castle Hill storage the unit rental for a 400 cubic feet sortage is like $250 per month. Then when you arrive you just stay in the more expensive temporary accommodation a couple of weeks until you secure a rental...Maybe i have this all wrong...would love some advise as we ship our stuff in a couple of weeks thanks karl

Hi Jonbclark,

I saw your recent post regarding schools in the Hills and i wanted to just drop you a quick note to say hi as we dont yet know anyone that is living there!

We are an Irish couple with a 6 year old daughter and we arrive on 27 August. We have started to look for schools in the area for our daughter to start in Feb 2013. There seem to be lots of nice rental properties but i believe there is a significant demand and can be difficult to secure.

Where are you from and when did you arrive in Sydney? Have you met many people there so far

sorry for the random message but just good to see someone else moving to the area, maybe we an keep in touch

 17. hi we are moving to castle hill in August, can i ask, how long on average should we budget to be in the serviced apartments, like does securing a rental take long - a couple of weeks? thanks a mill karl
 18. hi all we are an Irish couple with a daughter age 6 and are moving to Castle Hill in August. It seems a very nice area, schools etc and i will put up with the commute for that. There are lots of area close to the city like the Eastern Suburbs but we feel there is a very transient population there; lots of people renting for a temporary basis and less of a community feel (could be wrong there). Castle Hill and the Hills area in general we think will have more of a community feel and somewhere that you would want to eventually settle down in. The only drawback for me is not being too close to the ocean but a nice saturday morning drive and we could have breakfast in Manly. Would love to keep in contact with/e mail people that are in castle hill or are going there regards Karl
 19. HI all, Im posting this on your thread as I assume it is mainly Irish reading it. Has anyone used the International Organisation of Migration to purchase their flights. They have an office in Dublin but I know very little about them and with all the internet scams going on it is a bit unsettling to transfer thousands of Euro to their bank account for them to get the tickets and get bigger luggage allowance. Feels safer going to a travel agent or to the airline directly. Im sure they are prefectly ligit but would be reassuring if we heard from others that have used them thanks (sorry for hijacking the thread on postage, which is very useful) Karl
 20. Hi Just wondering if there is anyone out there that is working or plans to work in the financial services in Australia and want to share experiences. I am a financial adviser from Ireland moving to Sydney in Sept and will be working (hopefully) in a sale/business development role for a life office or brokerage in Sydney. I am currently completing my RG 146 for ASIC compliance and would love to hear from others in or would like to be in the same industry. karl
 21. we are on a tracker mortgage, will probably sell in a few years but renting in the mean time....i wont be telling the bank that i am in Oz
 22. Hi Karen, Thanks for your information...can i ask you one more question; We are looking at the different places in the Hills and it all seems so spread out. We would love to find a place in the region that had a real sence of community, that had a centre/main street that we could walk to. There seem to be lots of nice places and houses but with some it would appear the you need to get into the car and go down a highway to get to shops....any ideas? Castle hill does seem to have like a main shopping area, are there others like that? thanks again Karl
 23. Can anyone tell me the disadvantages of using groupage, ie the removal company bulks up your things into a 200ft container with others. We wouldnt have enough for a full 20 ft so the groupage cost from Dublin to Sydney was like €1,500, which included door to door delivery (exc insurance). This seems very good value but i see lots of people talking about much higher prices...am i missing something? thanks karl
 24. I cannot believe someone would even ask such a question. How could someone recklessly clock up that level of debt and then want to walk away from it?
