did you go over just on your OH's points or did you have some as well

as i have just been doing a bit more reading

and i can only get 115 points by my self

so would have to find a g/f that would want to do the move before i applyed for my 175 visa

Hi Lutonmatt,

The RSMS route does not require any points, it is entirely based on you gaining sponsorship from an employer and having a trade qualification, so there would be no advantage in you getting a girlfriend who also wishes to travel(!) In fact you are probably better hooking up with a nice Aussie girl- gives you another way to stay! LOL

Rockhampton is not on the Gold Coast so if you could find work there (and Nowell has given you much more specific advice in that area than I ever could) then that would be fine. I would say that we wanted to go to the Sunshine Coast but after 3 or 4 months could not find sponsorship there so opened up our options and ended up in northern NSW. If you can go and be open minded about where you end up then do it, in your situation (being single) this should be easier than if you had dependents!

The benefit of RSMS over 457 is that it is immediate permanent residency therefore in the long run it is cheaper and more secure. As to the working holiday visa, you should find somework to help tide you over while you find sponsorship if you are prepared to do different work, also if you do three months of fruit picking or similar you can extend your visa so you can stay for two years- this would give you plenty of time to find a sponsor.

Let us know what you decide or if there is anything else I can help with, we would all be interested to know what you decide and where you end up.

Good luck... :)

thanks for that

will have a look into sponser work might know a few people out there that might be able to help

i was looking at getting the 457 last night and come up with just needing the 5 points

i would rather get a g/f over there love aussie birds lol

i am not a main dealer trained but work in a small garage 2 lifts and a mot bay

am sure i could get on ok with main dealer but i have only worked were i am now and is a nice pace of life its all about doing the work right not speed

if a job take a day it takes a day

but normaly when i do work i work quick same as my mot's they are all quick dont like standing around at work

i would like to come out on a travel work visa but for me its money this end i can only do it once

were i dont work at a big place wages are not good and all my money is held up in my yank cars so once they go i will have about 10-15k to come out there with maybe more if i can do a bit of buying and selling

Hello all

We are currently on a 457 visa got here 2 weeks ago i start work monday in Rockhampton.

You will find it hard to get sponsorship in the cities and gold coast as i did when applying.

Its becoming hard to get sponsored i we were looking for over a year before i got offered sponsorship we come over here in march and i lined up interviews before we arrived.

I am a main dealer mechanic and was offered alot of jobs but they wouldn't sponsor me untili completed a 3 month trial and having a small family was unable to to do so on a work holiday visa. I'm under 30

I had 1 interview with a dealer in Rockhampton which a travelled for 7 hours by car from brisbane to attend an interview and here we are.

My advice to you lutonmatt is if you have no ties to the UK then come over on a work holiday visa you will find work no problem. Where ever you decide to head to

Any Questions just ask

how did you get you sponsor in the end any were to try

think this is going to be the way forward as a normal gsm visa is going to take to long in coming once i have my mind up i want to go well once i have a job that is

are there many jobs around rockhampton as it is the area i am looking to go and what is it like around there

i dont care about the schools yet well for a long time i hope lol

would be nice to get somewere near the surf as i want to take it up when i am out there

Mate to be honest Rockhampton may not be place for a young single man.

If i was in your shoes i would be heading to the cities or around the cities

Rockhampton has not alot going on do a search on here on rockhampton and you'll see peoples thoughts. There are alot of jobs in rockhampton but also are alot in OZ in general check seek

If you got that amount of money to come over with i would still recomend work holiday visa as you can pick were you want to go. We come over with less than that family of 3. If you search on here you'll find people who have come over with only 3k

In regards to looking for work i contacted all the dealers directly in the area we wanted to be and didn't get much responce so i widened our search and Rockhampton we ended.

Also used Seek and other job sites. But i found going direct is the best way

It wasn't our first choice but its a way in to OZ and with GSM taking so long its the best way for us.

Any more questions just ask.

i am not a city boy

i dont do night clubs pubs ect

i like to work hard then at the weekend have a nice game of golf then a car show or something on the sunday

so being quiet will suit me as long as there is some golf courses around somewere and somewere to learn how to surf i wil be ok

also to start with will want to go were the work is till i am over there and and once the sponser is over if i like it i will stay if not as you say and i have seen there are loads of jobs

but will see a mate that has a few contacts over there to see what he can do

i turning to the idea of coming over does seem a good thing to do

think i will pay off all my loans as quick as poss and then look to come over at the start of next year thats if i can get the visa and sponsor

Hi all,

Havent read though all of the thread but thought I'd pop a message on quickly.

Hubby is a master tech dealer trained for 15 years. We recently took a trip to Melbourne and met with 2 recruitment agents. To cut a long story short, he was offered several jobs and we settled for a dealership in Wollongong. They are sponsoring us on a 457 visa. Hubby does not have to complete any sort of trial either.

The whole process for us has been almost ridiculously easy. We just filled in a couple of forms and the recruiter / dealership / agent did the rest. Our application was submitted in July and we are told that in the next couple of weeks it should be granted.

We have not have to have medicals or CRB's.

The dealership have been extremely supportive and offered allsorts of assistance to us so we couldnt ask for anything more.

If you are interested I can pass on the name of the recruiter we used. He was extremely professional and was eager enough to fly from Sydney to Melbourne to meet with us when we were there and spend the day with us.

hi there ive been in wa for two years now as a mechanic.

definately do not worry about are u good enough etc because the standards here are a joke. there are so many back yard mechanics the gov has brought out a licencing procedure so when you get here u have to get licenced b4 u can work.

The licence app is quite straight forward BUT it will ask u for ur UK police check & if its

over 3mths old will not be accepted.

Ive worked on heavy / light and guess what no 6 week inspections etc no mot,s

and the aussy service is oil & filter and a service sticker on the window i told u it was a joke.

If the vehicles european the aussie is scared to death so they charge like a wounded bull just in case it all goes wrong there are still vehicles running around with points and condensers / can u remember how to set the dwell lol

if u need any other info pm me and i will tell u the truth how it is.:arghh:

sent a cv off to techs on the move as he wanted to see my cv and he said

Upon assessing your CV, I regret to advise that I feel that your chances of securing a 457 Business Sponsor are highly unlikely. In my experience, Australian employers typically reserve sponsorship for individuals with extensive experience in an Authorised/Franchised dealership, furthermore such experience must also be supported by a proven training record with the manufacturer.

I note that your experience, whilst extensive, has been with an independent motor repairer; accordingly I regret that I feel I can be of little assistance to you, under the circumstances

.

so is the end of the line on that route will see if i can find any more but looks like i would have to wait for my visa or try for state sponser

For those interested there is a company offering 457 visa's for heavy vehicle mechanics to work in the pilbara region. It's a 2 on 1 off rota and wages are in line with this type of work. The firm is called Brightwork and they are in Glasgow .... hope this is of use to someone ,

Hi Noodle, thanks for your post which is a very accurate account of the Vetassess process! I had my practical test at the same collage as your OH (May 24th 2010) and PASSED Whoop Whoop!!!!

My wife and I have found the whole process a bit overwhelming, even up to now! We have just lodged our 176 State Sponsored Visa Application Online (thanks to Canberra accepting our application) we have yet to scan and send all our evidence, but we are going to do all that this week.

We have done everything ourselves,as with all the changes with the DIAC and now the ELECTIONS, we thought that using an AGENT would not really help, due to the goal posts being constantly moved? Plus the Extra Costs!!!

We will be following this thread and updating as and when we can.

I did see a thread on this site about someone saying they got a letter telling him to get a Medical Check done just 2 days after lodging his Online Application?????????????

Does anyone know how long it takes to get a Case Officer appointed and what about Medicals and Police Checks, etc?

Thanks

Steve. :chatterbox::chatterbox:

Thanks Steve. It does seem to have been one thing after another this year and please do keep us posted, I will be posting if anything happens. Like you say it is all a BIG FAT 'IF' at the mo and no one knows what is really going to follow. All we can do if keep everything crossed, hope and prey. Re you comment about someone getting a case officer in two days I'd love to know what profession it was for? Thanks again. Ley x:cool:

My OH is a Mechanic working in Melbourne and I work as a Warranty Clerk also in the Motor Trade. We have been over here since December 2009 on a 457 visa- we are currently in the process of doing our TRA (Trades Recognition Australia- the OZ version of VETASSESS but by the sounds of it much simpler) and applying for our 856ens.

If we can be of any help let us know....

We both work in a Authorised/Francised garage/ group of garages.
