My parents have recently put in an application for a 143 Contributory Visa a few months ago after I went to see a migration agent and discussed my options with him. I asked the agent was there any alternative options for us as we obviously would love to save the huge fee that is required for this visa. He said that the 143 visa was our only option so we went ahead and applied. I then spoke to a english lady who told me that her parents were moving over here when they retired and that they were doing it the "sneaky" way. She said that they would make it look like they were coming here on a holiday and then when they got here they would apply for the retirement visa (the one with the huge waiting times). This would then give them a bridging visa until their visa came through but they would then be able to stay in the country and avoid paying the huge visa fee. Is this really a legitimate option and if so would it leave you vulnerable without a medicare card etc? Any help would be appreciated. Just wondering if this means all the other documents have been approved and this is the final stage before they ask for the money? Also, does anyone know what the timeframe might be now as to when she has the visa granted? I presume its after the money has been paid. With all of that said.......should she put her house on the market now? She is living in Essex. Once the visa is granted, how long does she have before she actually has to enter Australia? The need to be a genuine visitor when heading to Australia as the holder of an ETA or eVisitor visa is the risk issue that is to be factored into the equation. Thanks in advance..... Hi Stephanie! Sounds like your Mum is closing in on visa grant. Has she been asked to attend a medical examination, and to arrange the Assurance of Support? Once these have been cleared she can expect to be asked to pay the main Visa Application Charge. Visa grant should come through a few days later. She's nearly there! The required initial entry to Australia is within 12 months of the date of the medical examination and the police clearance certificate, whichever is the earlier. That arrival in Australia can be for a holiday, or her permanent move to Australia. Re the house sale: I'd make progress on this now, in an effort to move it along in parallel with the final stages of the visa application. Good luck! She wasn't asked for an assurance of support. I thought they always asked for this but apparently not. She must allow enough time for the 143 to be granted before the 173 expires so she doesn't find herself without a valid visa. I talked to her about applying directly for the 143 but she saw that as more of a risk as she didn't want to sell her house until she had a visa (which she needed to do to raise enough funds). An AoS is never requested with a subclass 173 visa application, so you shouldn't have been surprised. Note that anyone who has the required level of income can be an Assurer - the requirement is not the same as for a sponsor. Pommie Posted September 26, 2015 Share Posted September 26, 2015 Hi, I am just trying to gain a better understanding of parent VISA options as I can see the inlaws wanting to move over once we break the good news that we are heading back to Oz for good. I know 173 is a temporary and 143 is permanent, although I am not sure why people seem to advise going first for the 173 and then bridging this to the 143. I would have thought it was easier to go straight for the 143.....?? Also, Can someone advise of the cost for one or two parents coming over.... I had a look at the visa calculator, but this only suggested a cost of $3 - $4k.... and I see people quoting lots more than this. Any help or links appreciated. On 20th July was requested further documents and to submit AoS which was all done. AoS is dated Aug 13 after which there has been no communication from CO. No response either to emails. Guess, all one can do is patiently wait. Any other guys in the same situation ?? Hi Lucas Sorry for late reply. We also submitted requested documents but no reply from CO yet.
