Is there hope?

Hi

My husband has arrived on the gold Coast and is looking to find a job as a Furniture Spray painter. He has phoned, visited, emailed loads of companies but they all say nothing is going.:arghh:

He was speaking to the owner of the place he is staying and he said that he had arrived at a bad time and that the ozzies will look after there own.

I understand what he is saying but surely there must be someone who is willing to give him a chance.

Has anyone else heard this or even better is there any tradies who have managed to secure a job recently.

We would love to hear some positive stories or advice on what to do.

We dont want him to fail and come back to UK again. I couldnt bear being stuck here in UK. We (me and boys) are wanting to move over in October with the hope that he will have a job.

Thanks

Jill

Perhaps he is looking in the wrong place? I doubt the Gold Coast would be replete with vacancies for people with his skills. I have no idea where the best options for work with those skills would be but I would have thought somewhere more industrial perhaps? But yes, he is right this is very much a country of not what you know but who you know and people will always look after their own first. Hope he finds something somewhere.

Maybe he needs to think outside the box a little and give himself a wider choice. Perhaps if he looked for any kind of job he may have more luck and it would help to give him the time to find something in his own trade.

Good luck and I hope he finds something soon.

Eric.

I agree with both of the above. It may be a case of doing "anything" and living "anywhere" for a while to get your foot in the door , so to speak.

Good Luck x

Not sure if this helps Jill, but I know someone who started off in one of the big home hardware chains until they got the job they were after. Places like Bunnings (forgot what they are called in the UK, same thing though) who are the massive chain here often hire tradespeople in their store, as when they have DIY demonstrations they help out with those as well as sell on the floor to customers. Just a thought, there will be Bunnings in Queensland, you won't want to come down here (Vic) I would guess ! All the best with it.

Hi Jill

I think you have had some good advice from people. I think for now looking for any kind of work is probably the best thing and then hopefully from there your hubby can make contacts and find the right sort of job. As someone has suggested, maybe Bunnings, and there is also Mitre 10 which is similar.

I hope a job works out for him soon.

Love

Rudi

Wishing your hubby good luck in the job search. As people have said, maybe getting any job at the moment ... companies seem to be tightening their belts at the moment, but hopefully things will pick up soon.

That is the right attitude and it usually wins through in the end, who knows he might even discover a whole new career.

Good luck, Eric.

Of course people need to earn enough to live on, but working outside his specialist field doesn't necessarily mean he will earn a pittance and people in the U.K. earning the minimum wage do manage to survive ; albeit with a good degree of difficulty I'm sure.

The point I am making is that those who are prepared to adapt are often the people who have a measure of success in life.

Guest Darwin's coming too

Hi

We arrived in Oz 5 weeks ago and spent the first 4 weeks travelling around WA then across to Sunshine coast in QLD. About 95% of the aussies we met were very friendly, welcoming and said we'd have no probs getting jobs. (I'm a teacher and hubby is in vehicle maint but willing to do anything). I even spent several days chatting to a teacher from NSW who said I'd be fine.

It's come as a bit of a shock after albeit 5 days of job hunting to very quickly realise there's nothing out there for either of us.

One of my major stumbling blocks as a teacher (which I'd not thought of in Uk as it's not an issue) is that the private schools sector which makes up 50% of all Oz schools are church run (Christian, Lutheran, Catholic) and you MUST have a reference from your vicar/pastor and evidence of your church involvment. So unless I'm prepared to lie and/or join a church for the wrong resasons, I've lost over half of the job opportunities open to me.

I'm considering doing my barista certificate so I can work in a coffee shop as you can't work in one without the cert.

We love it here and are determined to stay even if it means staying with family for longer so we can both re-train and start afresh.

hi jill

i agree with all the advice youve been given so far on here

and it could be a case of just doing anything to get your foot in the door and then you will probably find someone you have met will mention that there is a job going etc etc and it will be a case of getting a job through someone you know or word of mouth

wishing you and the family all the best

due to the whole GFC - my hubby has been made redundant twice in the last three years!! the second tme was three weeks ago!!

however he has always managed to find another job quickly - albeit in a different profession! since we arrived here my hubby and I have seen it as a wonderful opportunity to try different things and we have really enjoyed the experience!!

If your hubby is a worker and he is willing to do anything then you wont go far wrong!! I am sure he could pick up casual work with no problem (which even in retail or manufacturing, warehousing etc. is $19+ an hour!)

We havent come across the "ozzies look after their own" culture at all. We have found everyone to be extremely helpful friendly and will go out of their way to assist if they can. A lot of it is word of mouth, but as said earlier you do whatever it takes to begin with!

Its fun......enjoy the ride!!!

regards
