I, too, am an Irish trained direct entry midwife who applied end of January. I do have a degree however I do not have the required professional practice requirements as specified in criteria 5. Just wondering how everyone else is getting proof from their uni that they provided continuity of care to at least 20 women throughout the various stages of pregnancy. I have been living in Perth since April with my daughter and am currently working as a disability support worker and am very fed up at this point! roscommongirl Posted July 10, 2014 Share Posted July 10, 2014 Hi erinaoife I have contacted university and my allocations officer, he sent outline of course highlighting 20 continuous care they looking for and her has also quoted an Bord altranais on their aspect surrounding continuous care I have spoken daily to my case officer and refuse now to speak to anyone in the call centre, as the just give false hope. I studied in Trinity and having 20 continuity of care experiences assessed & supervised by a midwife is not a part of our programme. We have 1 experience!! CLAK Posted July 11, 2014 Share Posted July 11, 2014 As a newly qualified Registered Midwife (Diploma of Higher Education) I found myself to be so much more qualified and highly trained than my Australian colleagues. They have completed almost 1000 hours less practical training and were never given the opportunity to perform venepuncture, suturing or cannulation - hence why they have the grad year. Guest NuriootpaSA Posted July 11, 2014 Share Posted July 11, 2014 A colleague of mine has been in constant contact with AHPRA as he has candidates and client hospitals hanging off the mess that AHPRA has created. He said to AHPRA that he has many Overseas qualified nurses who have been waiting up to 10 months for a decision, and that even the Australian hospitals are not aware of what is happening. AHPRA's response was that there are "many" nurses in the same position and they (AHPRA) can't do anything about that. No apology, no explanation, no sense. My background is having a BA Nursing Studies & BSc Hons Specialist Community Public Health Nursing. However, after 20+ years of nursing alongside colleagues who's training ranged from the old modular training through to masters level I am deeply saddened that highly trained, highly experienced, dedicated & intuitive nurses are not perceived to be 'good enough'. I had an email at the beginning of March saying they'd received my application. Approx 4 weeks later I was asked to supply another verification from the NMC. At the end of April I emailed to ask if they'd received this & was told at this point that my application had been forwarded for assessment of my qualification. I didn't have any other correspondence until my email on 11 July saying my application was approved. Although I've 12 months to attend an AHPRA office to prove my identity, if it's more than 6 months I've to also supply further proof of my current nursing registration with the NMC. petal84 Posted July 14, 2014 Share Posted July 14, 2014 Yes, I think you have been lucky with your waiting time. I think I have chosen the worst city, Sydney, to proceed with my application. All though I knew Sydney receive a heavier load of applications, I also thought they would be better staffed and organised then the other offices due to this. Anyways, my story is applying in Oct 2013. They asked for further documentation on the 11 Nov 2013, some of which they already had received. They also asked for a written reference from one of my nursing managers which was a nightmare to get in the chaos of Dec. The ward was so busy that I ended up writing the letter of reference myself with the blessing of my manager. She signed it and sent it off to AHPRA and it arrived just on my final due day for the missing documentation. Then I waited until April 2013 before I heard anything back from AHPRA and of course by then I was suddenly under the new guidelines which I was totally unaware of. They wanted more evidence which I did hand in as quickly as possible. I'm still waiting and my case worker won't call me back, nor respond to my e-mails. Honestly, I don't really understand nurses that want to come to OZ if they have no family or responsibilities over here. It's a nightmare and I would go home immidiatly if I could.
