Bananabutter
Hello all, My partner has successfully applied to do a six month secondment with a large accounting firm (on the priority skills list if that helps). The firm in question has paid for a business class flight in the middle of September and I’m just a bit worried (but don’t want worry him) that he might not be able to go given what seems to be a lot of media attention around covid in Oz. Had anyone been through this recently? Do you think it’s likely he will be going? As far as I’m aware his firm are holding off on the visa application until the last minute so that hasn’t been approved yet. (Can’t remember the visa number unfortunately, it will be a six month long specialist work visa) Thanks in advance for any input or relevant experience at all! I would trust that the firm knows what they're doing. Large accounting firms are used to handling visas and travel. Having said that, I would be anxious too, because I've never heard of a six month specialist visa and if he's travelling in September, I would've said the definition of "last minute" is NOW.
Skani
I assume he knows he will have to spend 2 weeks in compulsory hotel quarantine after arrival? Not of use to the OP's question but...I'm just bemused that Accountants were added to the priority skills list at all, given that there was a surfeit of them in Australia pre Covid and the occupation was slated to be removed from the skilled visa list completely.
paulhand
I agree with Marissa, he needs a visa AND a travel exemption and I would certainly think that ‘last minute’ is now for this type of scenario.
Bananabutter
Thank you all for your responses. I supposed I'm just a bit nervous on his behalf in case his flight gets cancelled! He's flying with Etihad and I think they're supposed to be on top of things and not taking 'more' passengers than they will be allowed to take. He is aware he has to quarantine for two weeks, he'll be having computer equipment delivered to his hotel apparently so he can work throughout. I think the visa is a 400(?) temporary work visa. I think the reason they're holding off is perhaps because they don't want the visa to be approved too early before he goes but I'm certainly not an expert. Thanks again :)

The 400 visa is valid for a fixed period from the date of first entry, and generally gives 6 months to make that entry, so that argument is not really logical. 1 hour ago, Bananabutter said: I supposed I'm just a bit nervous on his behalf in case his flight gets cancelled! That’s a bridge to cross when the visa and travel exemption are in hand.

wrussell
In similar circumstances I arrange for no more than a booking fee to be forfeited if a visa is not granted. It is not sound practice to rely entirely advice from a prospective employer, or a representative a prospective employer.

Etihad may have good systems but they are at the mercy of the Australian government which can (and has in the past) change the number of permitted arrivals. But hopefully that won't be an added complication for your partner.
Bananabutter
Thanks again everyone. We’ve just had notification this morning that his visas been approved so now it should hopefully just be the flight not getting cancelled and a PCR test in the way!

So they weren't holding off after all. That makes more sense. I assume he's got an exemption to travel too, because a temporary visa isn't enough to travel on. These days they don't usually approve temporary visas unless there is a travel exemption in place.

That's what I would expect but still worth mentioning just in case
