How rural is West Moreton/Ipswich?

Hi All,

Just after any info. about how rural West Moreton/Ipswich is or feels? Does a trip to the coast take a while? Have had a look at maps and it would seem a trip to the coast/beach would take well over an hour? I guess an option is top live nearer coast and commute out there.

Keep seeing great jobs and salaries advertised with Queensland Health out there but wonder if the salaries are reflective of how much they need to pay to attract applicants...?

I wouldn't really class Ipswich as rural. City of Ipswich alone has a population of 200,00+ which is big in Australian terms and Ipswich is classed as part of the Greater Brisbane Metropolitan area.

I suppose it would be a minimum of an hour to the coast, longer in peak times.

Photo below is Ipswich hospital and the other 2 photos are West Ipswich, to give you some idea of how urban/rural the place is.

(We live in the Lockyer valley, about half way between Ipswich & Toowoomba).

Hi

I have often seen jobs advertised with QHealth out at Ipswich too, but unless you are keen to live in the area, and involve yourself in the community, it wouldn't be my top choice. It feels a long way from things, and not in a particularly beautiful rural kind of way. I appreciate that I am massively generalising. and I don't wish to offend anyone living out that way. If I was moving to QLD for the first time and had a choice of location, I wouldn't be moving to Ipswich. However, if this is where the work is for your specialist area then you could give it a go. You could live halfway between Brisbane and Ipswich, which would give you a better idea of where you would like to be in the longer term, and closer to the coast.

The other thing to bear in mind is how often you will be going to the coast. It gets dark pretty early in the evening and so it tends to be a weekend thing - in which case the travel may not be an issue. If you are working shifts and have the opportunity to go more often, then you may get more from living further east.

Ipswitch has grown loads and improved massively over the last few years. It is a booming little city now and as pretty much everything there you could need. Like anywhere some subrubs are better than others, so it's good to have a good drive around when looking at areas or on checking things out on realestate.com..  If you do want a rural acerage feel , or small village enviroment you would be best heading out of Ipswich where it starts to turn into nice open fields, it all depends what you want as a family, there is a bit of everything in or around Ipswich so plenty of choice.

I would definately consider it and look into things further especially if you can get work out there as having a job lined up would certainly make settling easier.

 Lots of luck with everything

Sorry, but don't really understand the 'It feels a long way from things' comment ? Aside from having most of the things you'd expect a large town/small city to have - university, hospitals, etc etc, you could be in the heart of Brissy - South Bank, QPAC, convention centre, museum, Suncorp, Botanical Gardens, Indooroopilly shopping centre etc in 30 minutes or under from Ipswich

I am a little surprised that you can get from Ipswich to Brisbane in 30 mins. Is usually 50 mins to an hour on the train and 50 mins or more by car, traffic depending.

The OP was also keen to get to the coast, which would be at least an hour away.

I have family out that way, and they feel that they are 'a long way from things' and don't enjoy the commute from Ipswich to the city, or going into Brisbane on a weekend. Obviously the OP won't be doing a commute if they live and work out there.

Thanks for all the replies folks. Hadn't really realised that the beaches were all so far away from the city to be honest so thats helpful for us. We really would love to live a short drive away from a local beach. Melbourne is really our front runner at the moment and we are looking at Altona, Point Cook area. Just wanted to check out this area due to the frequency of job adverts that would suit us.

Stay away from Rural Queensland, West Moreton Ipswich is not what it's made out to be .Don't take any notice of coloured photos from anywhere in Australia .High Aboriginal population, high crime rate. Even the Mayor is in Jail. And it Floods.  if there is well paid  jobs there, nobody wants them.. It's more expensive to live. You go back in time 30 years. It's bone dry. Nothing works like Mobile phone.the Internet is slow ,and the  NBN is a dud.  There's usually no town water or sewerage. To get a Tradie out to repair anything ,it costs a fortune. Gold Coast is 2 hrs away. Most Rural Towns in Queensland have  high unemployment. We have Lived in the Lockyer Valley near Gatton for over 20 years. We paid $328 P/a when we moved here . We now pay over $2000 P/a and still have no Sewerage.  Some have no Town Water or sewerage. But still pay for the Pipe that goes past their house. It's too expensive to get connected. It's rip off city.

I live in Ipswich and it’s lovely. The river link shopping centre is nice right next to the river and there are some lovely older houses with beautiful colonial architecture. The city is older than brisbane. It is a lower socioeconomic area but it is nothing like the Uk equivalent. Don’t be put off by one bad experience. Hubby and I ride motorbikes and we go out west from ipswich. 20 mins to beautiful lakes and mountains with low traffic. Cormorant bay has a lovely restaurant that overlooks the reservoir. It’s stunning. We have beach days too all are around an hour or two for the Sunshine Coast.  Each to their own, but we have settled well here. Daughter went to USQ university of southern Queensland. If we need the city we can drive there in 40 mins. We rarely go there though with such natural beauty in our doorstep, more likely to drive up to Toowoomba through Cunningham’s gap and enjoy gorgeous scenery on the way. Toowoomba is about 1.5 hours inland and is called the city of flowers for the annual flower festival. The botanic gardens are lovely there and the Cobb and co museum. The Logan motorway takes us down to the M5 and the Gold Coast beaches/theme parks in an hour. We like it.

We live in an elevated position in Mt Cotton looking west towards Ipswich and we see first hand that Ipswich cops a lot of the stormy weather compared to us.  It is also a few degrees hotter in the summer in Ipswich as it does not benefit from sea breezes we get in The Redlands though it may be less humid.  Conversely it is colder at night in winter too with some frosts, unheard of nearer the coast.

The area around Brisbane has surprising micro climates.  Below are the comparatives for Brisbane and Ipswich.

It's technically a separate city but because Brisbane has grown so much it's part of the greater metropolitan area now (the end of a train line). It's a low socio-economic area which has had lots of issues over the years with drugs, high crime rates etc.

Summers are hotter and winters are colder than Brisbane.

I don't feel like it's a very safe place to live (Ipswich CBD and near there). I don't even feel safe on the train there sometimes. It is also prone to flooding so you'd have to check which suburbs would be less likeky to flood. I don't think of Ipswich as rural at all but some suburbs are definitely super quiet and have bigger blocks of land.

However, it has grown a lot in recent years and it has everything you would need to get through life. You're near the highway so it's easy to go for weekend drives to country towns and national parks. I think there are lots of families with kids in the area.

I know several people who live in Ipswich and really like it, but they work locally and I'm assuming they live in ok suburbs. They don't really drive to Brisbane though because they feel it's too far to go for a night out.

Depending on where in Ipswich you live and where exactly you're heading to, a drive to the Gold Coast can easily take 1.5 hours one way. A drive to the Sunshine Coast would probably take at least about 2.5 hours one way.
