Charity Christmas Gifts

Rather than buy - and be bought - 'stuff' this Christmas, I'd like to get everyone charity gifts - i.e. buy a chicken or a goat on their behalf for a village in Africa, or pay for a meal on their behalf for someone at a homeless shelter.... but I've read so much about how a lot of these charities use a high percentage of any donation for admin costs, or to pay a huge salary for their CEO, so I'd really like some way of finding out which charities to use to ensure the maximum possible percentage goes to the end user, and not to buy another Mercedes for some rich boss!

Anyone know of any place I can find this out? Obviously it's not something the charities themselves advertise, particularly the less generous ones!

For my son in Ireland we've made a donation to Doctors Without Borders. I hope a large percentage of that does go towards helping. Another charity we donate to is UNICEF.

This year i have donated straight to the charities,,

A local company were collecting bags filled with goodies for ladies who are homeless or in protection through domestic viloence, so DD and i filled 2 rucksacks with goodies and donated them.

We also purchased a summer rug for a rescue horse the local Horse charity had picked up.

I prefer doing it this way than donating money.

We have been donating to Mercy ships for a few years now , they are an organization that have a boat going around to some of the places who cannot access surgery etc , Every one who works on this boat, surgeons doctors, nurses technicians cooks etc give their time for free and also pays for their own board and keep You can say where you want your donation to be used , clothing for the patients, bandages etc Google mercy ships and just see how amazing these people are and what a difference they make to lots of poor people with horrendous medical problems

I think there is, unless the libs have closed it, a Charities commission which should show that info for Australian charities and ditto charity commission for uk based charities, 'medicine sans frontieres I have supprted because most of their staff are volunteers and operate under Red cross rules.

I am a board member and treasurer of a local charity. I deliberately picked one that targeted the old and disabled. . They rely upon me too much for financial matters, what I say goes and I am not comfortable with that. But you can easily download the accounts of a charity and see what they have done..

As someone that has worked and lived in a number of the countries that international charities are supposed to help, I would not support them. My last international role was in Tanzania. I was in one of the poorest areas most in need of help. Yet the only time I ever came across charities was in Dar Es Salaam on my way in or out who were living in Oyster Bay (£3000 a month for a apartment) and we're having very good times on the expense accounts in the casino.

Same applied in Uganda and Congo. The later of which was disgusting with a large number of charity workers who had not left the Bunia hotel for years and sat and sipped cocktails morning till night to the extent that most of the charities had rehab programmes running for them.

I volunteer for Childhood Cancer Association a local charity based near the hospital in North Adelaide. Over 90% of funds raised go to the cause ( significantly better than most). They get no government funding and do great work for not just the children but the families too. Practical stuff as well as support. Go to the website and you can buy an Elliot toy ( these are donated to the charity so 100% profit for them). Or you can buy specific support packages like counselling, home tutor, respite care etc.

They are a small team who work very hard to support families from SA, NT and VIC who come to the hospital for cancer treatment for their child.
