hjd Posted April 14, 2015 Share Posted April 14, 2015 Hello! I've been reading through so many pomsinoz.com forums since my bf and I decided to start the visa process for Aus. I wanted to start a new thread to chart our process and also to see how other people going through the same process were getting on. So, what's going on so far..... My bf is a secondary school teacher here in the UK with 5 years experience. He is applying for the 189 visa as a Secondary School teacher and I'll tag along as a de-facto - we've been together a few years and own a property together. We are in our early 30's with no kiddies and both university educated. We haven't sent any paperwork off yet as we've been waiting for all his transcripts to come back. The last one arrived today...yay....and we are going to have the completed application for assessment sent off by the end of the week. And that's as far as we have got!!! It's taken nearly 3/4 months to get all the transcripts together. The ones from his A-Levels took forrrrrrever. The university ones were actually surprisingly quick. The plan is to send off the application for assessment this Friday; get back an approval for us to then apply for an EOI; get some health/police checks; then go on to apply for the visa; pack our bags and move to Sydney....sounds simple doesn't it!? Manc84 Posted April 15, 2015 Share Posted April 15, 2015 I'm a UK teacher currently teaching in Sydney. Be wary there is an oversupply of teachers in the metropolitan area. It took me 3 months to find my first job and have been on temporary contracts ever since. Once you get your foot in the door you'll be fine nut don't expect to walk right into a job. Regarding your order of next steps, it is not normal to do police checks and medicals before applying for the visa. In fact the advise is not to do them until you are specifically asked. They are more concerned with university transcripts that show the units/fours years of university studied and the minimum 45 days of supervised teaching needed. liseylooau Posted April 15, 2015 Share Posted April 15, 2015 Hey hjd, We are just coming towards the end of the route you are planning to take. AITSL seemed to take forever! I submitted EOI on 21/1 and got invite on 23/1. Did medicals on 16/2 submitted application on 17/2 and sent away for Police checks end of Feb and was assigned a CO yesterday. Good luck! Good luck, its a very nervous wait! I found the worst bit was receiving an email to say....we have completed your assessment and the result is in the post!! The postal service is somewhat slow here to say the least....it would have been quicker to send it to the UK! Is your partner doing IELTS or anything? (PS I changed my Username!) Hi Manc84 - quick question, what is your teaching specialism? Are you in secondary education? My partner is currently an assistant head in a school for kids who have been excluded from mainstream education. adonjio Posted May 2, 2015 Share Posted May 2, 2015 Yes, AITSL takes about 8 weeks to be processed. But from overseas, it wil take another 3 weeks to get your posted results. The language tests are all varied. IELTS is the most commonly taken, as it is available virtually everywhere (I sat mine in regional WA) around the world. But being in the UK, you have the choice of others tests, which are most of the time more common sense than the IELTS money grabbing machine. CO = Case Officer, i.e the person who looks at your visa application documents and decides to grant it, delay it or reject it. If you have all your transcripts, I reckon that from the moment you apply to AITSL, you can hope to get your visa within 6-7 months at most. You seem to have enough points, both of you to fast track your Visa Invitation letter. All the best for where you end up in Australia (East Coast, I presume?). It is the best move I could have possibly done for my career, finances and personal interests. 8 weeks huh...fingers crossed! Are you applying from outside Aus? Is IELTS the english language test? AITSL took the money for my skills aseessment on 10/7 so I'm expecting this back in the next 3 or 4 weeks. Just got the marks I needed on IELTS so I'll be able to submit my EOI as soon as AITSL come back. Anyone got any idea on current timescales after submitting the EOI ? hjd Posted September 13, 2015 Author Share Posted September 13, 2015 Hi Mike! Our process has taken longer than we initially expected which is frustrating but I suppose you can't plan these things! We submitted the AITSL in about April and after about 4 weeks we got an email asking for more information which took a couple of weeks to get and send off. Once they received the paperwork they needed we got an email saying the response time went back to being an 8-10 week wait - the initial 6 weeks they had the paperwork got discounted. It then came through in the 10th week. Longest wait ever!! Once you've had a positive EOI back and you apply for the visa, I think it takes between 8-12 weeks. We submitted our EOI 12.09.15 and would hope to get a positive EOI in the next day or 2. We'll then get the visa application submitted and wait to be told to do our Medicals and Police Checks. One issue I think we'll come across is that I've lived aboard for a while so may have to get international police checks we're really really really hoping we can get to Aus in time for the new school year which gives us just over 4 months. I've had an agent working on my paperwork so hopefully it'll come back without any questions. I sense that finding jobs can be quite hard but I teach secondary physics / chemistry so this should give a better chance. I'm hoping to go in April or July but need my visa before April due to a big birthday ! Hope the timings work out for you - have you applied for any jobs yet ? It's my BF who is the teacher. He is a Geography teacher but he works in education for kids who have been excluded from mainstream education. He isn't going to apply for any jobs until the visa comes through. A lot of agencies wont discuss jobs until you have a valid visa. The hubby and I are both teachers although he is looking to go back into engineering. I'm lodging the application. I have an appointment to have my documents certified this week and hopefully will have them sent to AITSL by the Friday. My specialism is Design Technology but the Mister and I are still uncertain where to move to. We want the best opportunity for at least one of us to get a job so he has been advised NSW with an Engineering background. Of course I'm worried about property prices in NSW and not entirely certain I want to settle there. Can anyone advise? Reading up about Pom teachers in Oz can be quite demotivating I have found so finding positive stories on here is great. We wanted to move to Sydney (I used to live there and my bf has family there) but the house prices put us off as we would want to live centrally to the city! We have now decided to move to Brisbane and depending on things, we'll go to either the Gold or Sunshine Coast. The house prices and climate massively persuaded us. Also, there seems to be a lot of teaching jobs. With regards to Sydney, if it's somewhere you may end up, there are still some great, reasonably priced areas which are commutable to Sydney. Have a look at the Southern Central Coast - Gosford, Macmasters Beach, Umina Beach...they're all a lot cheaper than Sydney but still commutable. I have friends who live there and one of them gets the train in to Sydney daily. I think he finds the train journey a welcomed break from the kids With regards to work, have you contacted recruitment agencies in NSW/QLD to find out what vacancies there are and what demands for certain positions there are? If not, I would find agencies and contact them. We've generally find people super helpful with lots of information. We were surprised to find there seem to be many more teaching jobs in Brisbane than Sydney. I'm afraid I don't have too much knowledge on Engineering jobs. Let me know how you get on!! We're just waiting for the EOI to come back...it has taken longer than expected which is annoying...I'm soooo impatient! We lodged it 13th Sep and I was expecting something back within a day or 2 but I may have my information wrong as to how long they take to come back. My mister lived in Sydney years ago too, I'm not overly concerned about being near the city centre so we are not set on a locale just yet. Thanks for your advice though regarding suburbs. I will have a look. I've contacted relief teaching agencies so far but none specific to states, so I will definitely do that after I have lodged my skills assessment. There is so much to think about isn't there? I want to register as a teacher within states but obviously can't until the assessment comes back. Its a huge waiting game but thankfully all of my transcripts and references came back pretty quickly so I will have my assessment sent off by the end of the week. Its so exciting. I hope you hear back soon from your EOI. You must let me know how you get on. I know each case is different but from what I've read a lot of teachers have been invited pretty quickly.
