Mhanvey
Hi, I have read of several price comparison sites that living in Melbourne is actually cheaper than London, is this true? I keep hearing from Expats that the cost of living is that much higher than the UK, I have spent some time in Oz before travelling and I noticed a bit of an increase but not massive in comparison to what I was used to. Chortlepuss
London and Melbourne are very big places.... I suspect that nice areas of Melbourne are a bit cheaper than nice areas of London, but you still need an awful lot of $ to buy a house there..... calNgary
Swings and roundabouts.. and of course everyone's necessity's are different. I've seen price rises over the last few years but not extortionately and i do think its common for newbies to think its expensive when you see the amount in dollars (for example $3 instead of maybe 2 GBP). We have had a few posts from newbies lately, one was in WA and cant recall where the other went but both said they didnt think prices were too bad in comparison, have a read of the reccie and arrival report thread as im sure they were in there. London is a special case. The comparisons of the UK vs Australia are based on most of the UK vs most of Australia. London is more expensive than the rest of the UK. Bungo
I never found much difference on day to day costs. I didn't analyse everything carefully and I don't think it is a good idea too, so generally swings and roundabouts. The exception is accommodation costs, be it renting or buying. But you can easily look those things up specifically and of course consider the areas you are interested in particularly.
starlight7
I don't know how people can compare really. The wages are different, utilities are different ( water is very expensive here for example), the things you buy are different as are the expectations. Houses are, in general, much bigger than London so you have more heating and cooling to see to, more furniture needed etc. You need a car here- in London you can get by without one. Just so many differences.
flag of convenience
Melbourne not being a first tier city should be cheaper and the fact that this discussion suggests swings and roundabouts would suggest in my book that Melbourne is over priced. We moved from London to Melbourne. I reckon you need AU$2.5 for every £1 to be able to buy the same stuff. By the way, we find Melbourne to have all the advantages of London, few of the disadvantages and then there's the beach and the vineyards!
