Moving To Darwin In A Few Months Time

Hi Guys,

Loving the forum.

My beautiful wife has just gained her 489 Visa thanks to the NT Government. I am lucky enough to be married to her. She is a restaurant manager in the UK and is planning to do the same in Darwin when we land. I am a Construction / Project Manager and will be looking for employment when we land.

Quick question: Is it possible to secure accommodation prior to arriving in Darwin? It would be easier for us to rent an apartment via the internet for the first six months in the CBD, is this acceptable to letting agents in Darwin?

Second quick question: We will be flying into Perth to collect our car after a friend sorts out the Rego and collection etc. It is a 2005 BMW 650i with 250K Kms on it and a decent history. Does it have a resale value in Darwin or is it better to change it for a 4X4 in Perth?

Third quick question: Is it really as easy as people say to secure employment in Darwin for hard-working people? We are both really work-orientated and throw ourselves into it.

Any assistance you guys could provide would be happy received.

Rob & Evvy. (Soon to be living the dream in Oz)

Hi

I cant help with the job front up there but wanted to wish you lots of luck with your search.

Have a look at sites like carsales.com, Ebay and Gumtree to see what the market is like in Darwin.

Accommodation wise, most people book short term / furnished / holiday accommodation for 4 or 5 weeks as this gives you time to find, view and apply for longer term rentals. Its almost impossible (and risky) to rent long term when you havent viewed the property in person.

Hope this helps a bit

Hi Rob and Evvy,

Its funny when I read this because I've also secured the 489 visa as a restaurant manager too and myself and hubby and 3 year old son will be coming this year to Darwin, we have similar enquiries about accommodation, I understand that a lot of accommodation is booked up in peak season, what month are you thinking of going? We'll let you know anymore info about it as we learn more, it would be quite fun if we were all to meet in Darwin and see how adventure of our new lives are panning out.

Wish you blokes all the best, The Darwin is a beaut place, but is totally different from anything in the UK.thumbs.gif

Cheers, Bobj.

It's a lot different to most places in Aus too Bob, great place none the less.

To the OP, Are you planning to drive from Perth to Darwin? It's a good old drive. I would be trading in the BMW for a decent 4 wheel drive. Resale value might be a bit low for the beamer though.

Some nice restaurants in Darwin BTW.

Welcome to the forum. One quick question did you buy your car here or are you importing it from the UK? The reason I ask is that the paintwork doesn't seem to do very well in the heat up here and you may be best leaving it down South. Have a look at red book to get an idea on how much it should go for over here http://www.redbook.com.au/portal/tabID__2807404/DesktopDefault.aspx I'm guessing you have already shipped it. In regards to a 4x4 you won't need it in Darwin but if you want to go out exploring then yes I would recommend one. For restaurant manager try asking at Skycity they usually have a few jobs going.

Renting, like Cal says please don't do it without seeing it first. Try and secure a couple of weeks in a holiday rental whilst you look for something more permanent. I wouldn't recommend Palmerston Sunset Retreat the photos and write up are nothing like the real thing. The free spirit camp site is lovely and they have some beautiful cabins http://www.darwinfreespiritresort.com.au

That sounds like a hell of a road trip, Perth to Darwin in a 650!... nice motor by the way. Like others suggest, have a look at car sale sites and use this as a guide for your car resale value.
