Laura Fawbert1 Posted November 19, 2014 Share Posted November 19, 2014 We are thinking of bringing over our family car and from the import license it appears we can do this on a 489 as it is a pathway to P.R. We intend to stay and achieve a new life for our family, however, we have one worry. We do need to stay in South Australia for 2 years and work for one, if we are unable to for fill the criteria due to difficulties in finding employment, where do we stand in terms of the car. Are we expected to pay for shipping it back to the u.k? This would seem draconian and financially prohibitive. Can we sell it in the 2 year timeframe prior to achieving P.R via the 489/ 887 if we had to. We need to factor all the outcomes into our decision making, has any one done this? can you help? First you need to work out if it is worth bringing it, there is a sticky thread in transport section with info on this. There are a variety of costs involved other than the shipping. oh and regarding the employment it doesn't have to be in the job declared on the visa it can be any job. Iron Chef Posted November 20, 2014 Share Posted November 20, 2014 HI Laura, Once you have the import approval for the car to come to Australia, you can send it over and sell it whenever you like. Department of Infrastructure and Transport generally only applies restrictions on selling the vehicle where there are extenuating circumstances that make your application fairly borderline (eg. you need to bring the vehicle over earlier than 12 months for a legitimate reason, like a work transfer). They arnt thinking of selling it immediately, Just forward thinking in case every goes tits up and they have to return to the uk. The question is, can we flog it within a few months of importing if we run out of cash and have to return as we couldn't afford to send it back? Thanks for your logical response DMJG, you have spoken sense to the above reply. It seems people are keen to knock you and do so before they have thought about what we are asking. I know someone that brought over here a newish Volvo ...6 months later, a failed relationship and they couldn't afford to ship it back. Dealers Didnt want to know, because it was an import. Advertised it at a v reasonable price, but in the end had to take a lot less than what they were asking. I believe that was the only offer she got, they were happy enough to buy it because they Didnt intent reselling it, rather keeping it and running it into the ground so to speak. another family I know brought over a seven seater ford, can't remember the model, but one that you don't get here.
