Should we save money before EOI?

My husband says that before we even consider moving or writing an expression of interest, we should save money. I agree, but I wonder how much is enough. Has anybody had their re-location fees paid by their employer?

My husband is a geophysicist (PHD) with 10+ years experience in his field, 38 years old, with superior english. I am wondering what amount of savings would be needed to meet any of our needs.

Thank you!

If I'm correct a Geophysicist is a pretty well paid job in Australia.... However, the security of a decent savings pot is obviously the best way forward for anyone. I'm sure people have had their relocation fees paid but often means you are tied to the employer for so long.

All the best, I'm sure someone who knows more than me will be along to advise x

We spent about £25k on our move, including visa process, transportation, initial accommodation. We both had jobs to go to as well, but no we did not have moving fees paid, we were trying to compete for jobs with locals whilst we were still living overseas, so demanding relocation allowances was not wise in our situation.

Of course it is possible to spend less than we did, although I find when you are a bit older you don't want to stay at the local YHA with a back pack (we were 36 and 40 when we moved).

I guess you would need to explore for your specific occupation whether any company would be wiling to assist with relocation, it depends on demand. I thought with the slow down in mining that demand for geophysicists had retreated but I am not sure. @very stormy might know better.

Ok, that is about 30k euros. Well, nobody said living a dream comes cheap. I heard that the demand is slowing down also. We better get moving. On another note, my skill is that of a horse trainer. Nobody is looking for that skill, so my husband is on his own. Thanks for the reply. It helped.

I can't help much on the geophycist side but think saving as early as possible is definitely a good idea. It's better to have too much than too little. We won't be making our visa application for a couple of years yet (assuming the occupation is still on the SOL) but have started saving already

I am so bummed out. Because of the replies here, I checked the sol and csol list and geophysicist is not on the list. Last week, it was there. How quickly things can change. It is quite an awful feeling. I guess we will be doing the same as you.

Oh no, it is difficult as it does change to meet the demand. We're in a tricky situation with my OH, he's training to be a lawyer which is curently on the SOL however and he would need to do units for the law society in Australia to be able to practice. The difficulty is he could start to do them (and pay the high fees) only to find the occupation is subsequently taken off the list before he actually finishes the extra studies. But keep hope, the lists I think are updated on the 1st of July so keep an eye on them to see if it comes back on

Maybe a MARA agent may help with any hope of other possible Strategies?

I don't think the list has been updated this week. Check again, it is there...

it is only on the CSOL though, which means you need either a state or an employer sponsor if you were to apply now.

Yes, I checked again. Maybe my eyes are playing tricks on me. Sorry for the drama.

If it's any help, Horse Trainer is on the CSOL (Consolidated Skilled Occupation List), so you could always go down the state sponsored route (though I guess there's no reason you wouldn't be successful on your husband's job)... not sure if being on the list is an indication of the likelihood of there being many jobs in that particular occupation (maybe someone else can answer that?) - I would presume so, otherwise what's the point of it being on the 'wanted' list? I'm sure someone will prove me wrong though ;-)
