hi

after being settled in Brisbane for 2.5 years my husband is being moved to Darwin. As we are on a 457 we have little choice (we are at the point they can sponsor us for PR) and fly in fly out doesnt seem sensible without the family network of support. the children (7 and 5) will be sad to say good bye to school and friends but we look at it as the next adventure though maybe not a permenant one! We have been researching areas and would like more opinion on the palmerston/darwin debate please. I would like to know which suburbs are best to avoid sandflies. at the moment we seem to have narrowed it down to Stuart Park, Nakara, Nightcliff, Durack, Leanyer - mainly due to school info recieved- any opinions? I am a teacher so will need to register in the NT and hope to get supply - is anyone teaching up there?

thanks in advance I look forward to chatting to some new friends on here

cheers Helen

I spent a week in Darwin in October and didn't notice any sandflys or mozzies. Then again it may be different in the wet season. Or it could have been because I spent most of my time in pubs and the Casino. We had dinner on the grass at the Mindil Beach Night market and didn't have a problem with insects. We stayed in an apartment at Stuart Park and it was an easy walk to everything.

Oops just found this.

Palmerston suburbs.........Driver,Durack,Gunn,Rosebury,Woodruffe,Johnston,Bellamack,Farrar

Avoid.......Moulden,Grey.

Anything near the CBD is expensive........Stuart Park is OKish,Nightcliff can be hit and miss,Leanyer would siggest you look around carefully lots of social housing and lots of issues same as Nakara

Would avoid Mallak,Mararra

Jingli,Allawa lots of Nepalese/Indian.

thanks for this Janine. How do you rate palmerston to Darwin? We are not too bothered about being central but would defo like a child friendly suburb and a newish house. Durak seems to have best primary school in palmerston. Though yet to visit them personally!

Is there anything you really miss - I find the thought of having no Myers/des very odd. But maybe independent shops make up for it or maybe I need to stock up before coming!

Thanks for any further advice

Spent a fair bit of time in Darwin in the wet and dry seasons. First time I went I was there for a month in July, August and loved it. Just about perfect temperature, nice in the evening for a walk around, good atmosphere in the town at night.

Went in the wet season and it threw it down for the 5 days I was there. It was a bit unusual though. I've been since and had decent weather in the wet season.

Don't care for Palmerston at all. We work out at the Army base which is close to Palmerston, so we go into there for lunch. Just not a nice vibe, nothing going for it. Would gladly pay a lot more to be nearer Darwin and nearer the coast. coming from Perth I missed that there is a lot of coastline and nice beaches around but you can't use it as much as you can in Perth. Always seems to be some issue with crocs, stingers and other bitey or stingy things in the water. Having said that, when I was there in July I found the local Surf Club and was surprised to see people out windsurfing. I asked one of the local Surf Lifesavers if it was safe to windsurf. She asked where I was from and when I said Perth she said that everyone from Perth thought that it wasn't safe but, at that time of year, it's not bad at all and heaps of people are are on or in the water.

I was staying at the Crowne Plaza and Holiday Inn in Darwin and both were pretty good. Holiday Inn had a 25m pool so that was great to get back and have a decent swim. The man made swimming area close to the wave park was OK when it first opened and I used to use it a lot. When I went back a year or so later there was hardly anyone using it and a local guy told me there were a heap of groper (I think) in there and they kept bumping into swimmers and giving them a fright. Apparently they are quite territorial. I don't think they would do you any harm but the water is murky and it just feels a bit weird when one bumps into you. I still swam in there a fair bit.

If push came to shove I could easily settle in Darwin and enjoy it. I would have to be near Darwin though. Fannie Bay is nice and a few suburbs around there. There are some new developments which look OK around Bayview and the apartments around the waterfront are nice. Expensive though.

Good luck.

Thanks for thatpaul1perth it's great to hear the positive:-)

hoping to get up there in next two weeks. Find out package today- better be good.

the problem with the city is houses equivalent to our$700 pw in brisbane bayside are $1000-1200?!?!?! And then some to get into school catchments. I was reading how Rudd was going to offer tax incentives to work there but knowing our luck if he gets in it'll only be for newbies!,

janine the party queen where do you holiday from there? I love living here in SEQld as so many destinations for short breaks but apart from parks is there anywhere local. Flights to Bali broome alice etc seem very dear on sky scanner :-(

In the 2 yrs that we have been we have been to,

Vietnam

Bali

Singapore

Brisbane !!!

kakadu

Flights out of Darwin are very expensive. You just have to have the money there and then to catch a good deal.

I have no issues with Palmerston it has everything you need and its much cheaper than Darwin.

However prices are going through the roof for just about everything.

Shopping wise Im afraid there is not much in the way of choice.

No Myers,David Jones,Ikea,Superamart,Fantastic Furniture and only Coles and Woolworths for food.

Just realised you are coming from Brisbane.Your jaw will hit the floor at the prices up here.

I have spent time in Brisbane and have been shopping with Johndoe.I can not believe how cheap everything is in Brisbane.

We have just had a 40% increase in power bills, only one provider up here, its really hitting home with the locals that Darwin is becoming out of reach for average wage earners.
