Australian Mining Job Information

Any ideas where a graduate geologist should start looking for work? Are there agencies that he should contact? (for a friend of mine moving to Perth).

Terra Search are pretty decent, tell them to have a look on infomine.com. However, they should come with the knowledge that it is hard at the moment. I recently laid off some junior geo's who had 1-2 years experience and non have been able to find work and have now had to return to the UK.

Dose anyone know what the job opportunites are like at the moment for a Mechanical/Pipe Fitter either in the mines or in Perth, I already have a visa which we validated last year, is it worth applying for jobs while still in the Uk? , I would be able to start straight away, Also would it be better to try and gain a Diesel Fitter qualifications ( if time allows) before leaving?

Any Help advice would be greatly appreciated.

You have heard it a thousand times before, need experience, must have experience, 6 months experience and it goes on. So how do you get experience? You may be a trades person with years of experience in your trade, but when it comes to applying for mining jobs, you are still considered to have no experience because you haven’t worked in the mining industry.

• Look for entry level roles such as drillers offsider, labourer, trades assistant, peggy ,cleaner, site security, hospitality, bus driver, landscaper.

• For tradies trying to break in, get a job in town first and after 6 months try and get on site – you have to start at the bottom

• Contact companies direct, don’t just use career sites.

• Contact drilling companies direct.

• Doing a trade will give you more options – if you get sick of mines (and you will, believe me) you can move to a city and still get work fairly easily. Not for the same money, but still a decent income

• Work in Rail

• Mining support service companies.

• Do 3 months work at a work shop that repairs or builds mining equipment…that’s how you get into mining!

• Get experience with civil construction companies

• Try oil & gas industry

• Get into doing some shut down work on & off over a 6 month period.

• Get experience in construction.

• Apply through contract companies looking for people with skills you have.

• Do some civil work and get experience and move to a mining town it so much easier to get on then a FIFO position.

• Try an apprenticeship and get a trade behind you.

• Get experience with a contractor, don’t try to get straight on with the mine.

• Talk to recruiters and ask their advice

• Have a good resume that is relevant to the position you are applying for
Don’t just say “I want any job” and apply for everything, research the jobs

• Look for courses you can you do to improve your chances of getting employment.

• Get in with an earthmoving company that contracts to the mines

• Research jobs through local employment agencies in mining areas.

• Don’t try with the big companies like Rio or Bhp try the small family run contractors.

• Apply for Traineeships and Apprenticeships through apprenticeship centres.

• If you have skills and experience from jobs, courses and/or community work, but you don’t have the ‘piece of paper’ to prove it you might be eligible for recognition of prior learning.

• Relocating to the towns where the jobs are will improve your chances but this is not a feasible option for everyone and you must consider things such as high prices of accommodation and living expenses in mining towns and again there are no guarantees of a job.

Hi Guys, I have tried most of the companies that post on here, I am a qualified Heavy and light vehicle mechanic with UK and Australian qualifications and 25 years experience on most makes and type of vehicle from small european car up to big earthmovers and dozers, i am presently teaching Vehicle repair in the UK, my problem is I am 55 so nobody wants me, they all know the only option is 457 but that I would only be allowed to stay 4 years: so its just too late for me OZ is a no go, only option is for NZ but the pay scales are less than UK for the same job role:

Article that was posted by a mining recruiter on LinkedIn recently, it might shed a bit of light on why some of you can't get answers fro overseas...

The Australian job market can be very frustrating and confusing for mining job seekers from overseas, as they tend to feel they are being sent mixed signals from potential recruiters. Amidst the constant rumours and reports of the engineering and mining skills shortage in Australia, workers from overseas get their hopes up of landing a job in Australia. They read how Australia will be looking to migrant workers and temporary skilled workers in order to fill the skills gap. However as many frustrated mining professionals from overseas, who are wanting to work in Australia have found, that when push comes to shove and they apply for the positions, they find the door slamming firmly shut in their faces.

Hopeful mining professionals from overseas looking at expatriate work in Australia, find that it is extremely common, that as soon as they apply for jobs within Australia, they get told that the company wants local experience, i.e. that they need to have worked in Australia before. They often also get told that they need to already be based in Australia. They also get told that they cannot be considered unless they have a work permit already, or that due to the current market conditions, that the company will need to recruit from within Australia, and is not able to look at applications from overseas.

The bottom line is it is extremely difficult to find work in many overseas countries, including Australia, unless you get offered a transfer overseas with your current employer. The reason for this is that companies tend to avoid making expensive, high risk and complicated hiring decisions, and will generally try to fill these positions internally first. When companies become desperate, and are not able to find anybody locally they will generally then open the playing fields, and start considering mining professionals from overseas, but this is not ideally their first choice.

The reality is that in recent years, the mining industry has seen a significant rise in sourcing qualified people from overseas, so there is always the chance that you will get lucky, however the norm is that they will always try to recruit locally first. Foreign workers who have successfully applied for an independent skilled migration and therefore are already allowed to work in Australia and are already based in Australia will generally find it easier to find a job. However if you are currently based outside of Australia with no work permit, it can be daunting for the company, and they may be likely to avoid the process, unless all other avenues locally have been exhausted first. To add to this already complicated situation, many job seekers who take the initiative and apply for visas or residency in the hope that it will help them in finding employment in Australia, find that unless they have an offer on the table already, that the chances of getting a visa or residency are greatly reduced. So they find themselves in a “catch 22 situation”. The companies do not want to employ the job seekers unless they have a work permit, BUT they cannot get a work permit without an offer!

This can be very frustrating and demoralising for job seekers. What they don’t know is that he main motivator behind this mind set, is not only the time consuming process of organising work permits, plus the red tape involved in this process, but also the costs involved in organising visas etc. There are reports of companies spending anything between $7 000 and $65 000 for every worker that comes to Australia on a 457 visa. These are massive costs that the companies have to absorb. Then there is the time factor that is a worry. Visas can take a while to be approved, and relocating overseas can also take time. Many companies are not prepared, or not able to wait for this amount of time. Then there is always the risk that the prospective employee may pull out of the process at the last minute. The reality is that moving overseas, is very expensive. Uprooting entire families to relocate to the other side of the world can become a logistical nightmare and. can be very traumatic for families. It is not unheard of for the prospective employee to get cold feet at the last minute and change their mind, and let the company down.

For this reason, given the numerous complex problems the companies have to face when employing job seekers from overseas, many companies tend to try to minimise their risk as much as possible, and will avoid hiring from overseas if there is any other way of filling the job locally.

The thing is, you are trying to get into an industry that is pretty much in recession. Pretty much every mine in Oz has been laying off people. That causes a double whammy for green / trainee applicants as not only are there less jobs, but there are experienced people available to fill them.

I also never recomend people go out and get tickets as most mines dont recognise them if there not done in house

whats it like trying to get into the mining if you have no experience??

Let me put it like this. Why should I employ you when I have a hundred applicants with experience? Also, 90% of roles are skilled mine roles and I am guessing without experience you don't have them skills. Sorry if that sounds harsh, but I hate to see people deceived.
