Visa granted-initial excitement over...what to do next???

Hi,

Our visa was granted on Friday! Yay!! So we have had a lovely weekend celebrating and are ready to get our flights booked up-soooo exciting.

We will be heading to Perth on a 176 in June next year.

I am now starting to put together a 'to do list' of things to do before we go in June but also things to think about soon after we arrive.

It would be fab if anyone can just give me a few pointers of what and when I should think about doing things-don't want to miss anything! I am sure things will pop up that I haven't even thought of!

Thank you so much in advance for your help.

Congratulations on getting your visa!!

You can find checklists online if you use google as that is what my husband did. It sort of gives you a breakdown of what to get done with 6 months to go, 3 months to go etc.

There is so much to sort out - more than I was expecting. We have just booked our flights for Brisbane. We have already had quotes from removal companies and had estate agents around as we are going to rent out our house. So we are calling everyone this week to book.

We have also had to sort mortgage permission to rent. Plus looking into registering our property so its less risky for fraud.

Then there is the big task of sorting through all clothes and toiletries to figure out what we are taking, what needs to be shipped and what to get rid of.

It's all very exciting but hard work.

Wishing you the best for your move over

x

Thanks Jit7, really appreciate that. Don't suppose you can remember the website your husband used? I can find lots of check lists but I was ideally looking for something like you say with a breakdown of time (6 months to go etc) no worries if not!!

When are you off to Brisbane? Luckily we don't have a house to sell so can just up and go but being sensible and staying here for a while to pay off the dreaded credit card first!!!

Best of luck with your move, hope you get all your stuff sorted too.

Also if anyone knows from past experience any obscure or random things that we might not necessarily think of it would be quite useful to get this going - random things to think about, whats worth brining, whats not worth bringing etc etc!!

Thaaaanks!!

I can't find the exact website, but I will have another look for you when I get home. However, I did find these so I hope you find them a little useful.

Thanks for that, a couple of things I hadnt thought of on there!! We are lucky I suppose that we dont have a house to worry about selling and hopefully we can just chuck a load of stuff in various friends/family members garages until we are ready to ship it over so that also helps!

I'm not really panicing at the moment, it seems ages away and time is just going so slowly but I dont want it to be a couple of months beforehand and I'm rushing around trying to organise stuff!!

Thanks for your reply, good luck with everything and I hope you get through all your lists!

Our agent has said that we dont need to have stamps put in our passports as it is all electronic now, however lots of people on here have advised getting this done anyway.

I do think it would be a good idea to do this just so that we have something official showing the visa. Is it def worth doing?

I can look it up but does anyone know how I actually do this?

Dig23, have you seen the article on PIO which gives a pre departure checklist?

http://www.pomsinoz.com/forum/content/8-emigrating-checklist-departure.html

We're in the same boat as you, probably heading out to aus Aug/Sep next year. Feels like a ages away but I bet it flies.

Good luck...

Oh no I hadn't seen that, thanks very helpful!! Well I've got a pretty good list going of things to do, should keep me occupied for a while!!

I don't want to wish time away but it does seem to be going so slowly at the moment! Well good luck with your move, hope it all goes smoothly for you.

DEFINATELY get your visa label put on your passport!! we were told we didnt need to but did anyway, thank god we did because we have been asked for it on several occasions and without it would have made life more difficult. you need to sent your passports Via special delivery to Australia house in London with a second special delivery envelope so they can post it back to you. Google Australia house London and the address and info how to get your visa label is on there web site. Hope this helps a bit.

Yeah from what people have been saying on here I decided to do it so sent them off yesterday. Thought its better to have more info when we get over there rather than scrambling around trying to find stuff!

Thanks. Hope you're enjoying Queensland!!

If you want to change your UK for an Oz driving licence you'll need to put a stamp in your passport - they won't give it you otherwise (that's the score for Perth anyway). All you need to is send your passport, a copy of your grant letter and a sae to the Australian commission (I think - your visa notice will have the contact details on it). We sent ours and got them back all stamped up within about 4 days.

Sounds like we're in a similar boat to you - only we're hoping to be gone by Christmas. One of the best things we did was "grill" the removal people - they were really useful sources of information and (in the case of Crown) had a really helpful checklist. The other thing we've done is gone to see a financial advisor that specialises in Oz migration - again very very helpful. We used Alan Collett (from Go Matilda) he gave us both the financial and some practical advice. Good luck!

Thanks for that! Got the labels- sent our passports off the other day and actually got them back yesterday. It's nice seeing it in our passports!

We used Go Matilda too and I have to say they were fab!

Thats a good plan, I've already started phoning around a few people so I will start grilling them now! Well best of luck with your move too.

I'm not sure if it's the same for all removal companies but John Mason, who we're going with, said get rid of all the stuff you don't want to take. You can then leave everything else in the rooms as you have it (clothes in wardrobe, books on shelves, etc). They will have an inventory of everything they need to take, and I'll be around on the day to direct them otherwise. They prefer to pack everything up. It also means one less thing to do transporting your stuff to other people's places.
