  1. She'd be in one of the correct years in Qld. You could've started her in prep a year earlier but no legal requirement to do so. If you want reassurance about your decision read the first chapter of Malcolm Gladwell's book, Outliers.
  2. You should have absolutely no issue with a visa application with this.
  3. Wonderful! Our memorandum of sale just came through.
  4. Anyone got any advice on how to cancel UK services from these bar stewards without obeying the "we advise you to use our helpline". "HELP" line? Virgin media want a letter ffs. Is this the 1980s?
  5. Interested to follow how this goes. I've put through a "get quotes" application and Solaris, Rockwell, GMS and Atlantis look like they're coming up with numbers.
  6. You're currently in one window and BBC iPlayer is in another. Bluetooth keyboard on top of work laptop on my lap and mouse by my side. (This is getting a bit "tell me what you're wearing"!)
  7. You'll have to educate me here! Is this a way of getting in touch with someone who wants to move there stuff from Perth to Brisbane and doing a deal? Surely logistics companies do all that don't they?
  8. How is this going? I'm looking for up to date experience with moving from UK to Aus and also shipping within Aus. For the latter I'm thinking Toll?
  9. All VPNs are not created equal - probably depends on which you use with which browser.
  10. Yes they will work. There will be some differences as Ken has highlighted. I've never changed any settings. Prime does some funny things. We have a VPN that's useful when things are georestricted and gets around the issues.
  11. Well That escalated quickly. Some of this useful, yes. I think we'll have a good look at City beach when we visit, with specific reference to trampolines in the garden. The reason I asked about it was that you seem to get a bit more house for your money there compared to more Southern suburbs. From a professional point of view, I've not encountered a lot of meth users that hold down professional jobs and have immaculate gardens. Weed and blow, yes, meth not so much. As has been suggested though, a neighbour with an immaculate garden, who likes a party with little or no impact on their neighbour, is fine by me. We're moving from Northern suburbs of Brisbane. I'd be entering and exiting home suburb on bike almost all the time unless doing the school run. I Think all the suburbs I mentioned are within jog home distance from SCGH too. The main decision regarding location is going to be the school we choose for our daughter. The main reason for moving is work related rather than city.
  12. We're moving across. In the words of The Pet Shop Boys "life is peaceful there". But, where exactly? Having read the Inner West thread, we're looking at slightly different areas. We will both be working at Sir Charles Gairdner and we have a daughter who has just turned five and so is going into year 1. We are looking at St Hilda's and St Mary's, visiting in September. From a couple of days looking around I think Cottesloe, Nedlands, Claremont looked nice with perhaps Wembley Downs and Churchlands if we were to go for St Mary's. Dalkeith looks too spendy! Is there good public transport down to the hospital from a little further North? Is there something "wrong" with City Beach that is driving down the price of big houses with ocean views? I'd hazard a guess at drugs from the postings on here. Any further advice a year on and in slightly different circumstances to the other thread?
  13. You need one of the newer iPhones - I think from the 2020 SE or 7 onwards and then you request it from your provider. Disclaimer here is that I'm not sure it's still working! It should be, but I'm not sure it is! I was a cheapskate and bought a secondhand phone for $400 rather than new for $700
  14. I do exactly the same - cheapest Virgin contract. It is now a virtual sim on my Aus iphone and very easy to set preferences. Despite this ease, I dropped the ball on the way out and somehow managed to rack up an impressive charge on the flight to Singapore. My wife has a very cheap EE UK tariff and a Lebara sim in a dual sim OnePlus and does similarly. Most calls are via wifi at home.
  15. Tell the furniture and china to get a grip. It's not all about them, it's the best move for you and your family.
  16. I reckon a 190 is first class but you have to sit rear-facing to Luton...
  17. It arrived in time. My wife's passport is arriving today having applied on 8th May so 4 week turnaround time for standard application.
  18. Here's some breaking news: (No, still a sociopath as PM in UK) My wife's UK passport is arriving today! Applied via website, standard format, in UK on 8th May and arriving in UK today. - 4 week turnaround.
  19. Some appointments are apparently reappearing. You'll need to look every day. Your only "good" option is to arrange an appointment - Peterborough or Victoria - and go to UK first otherwise travelling in Schengen area isn't going to be possible I don't think. My wife's passport has been printed and awaiting posting. I'll let you know exact dates later but I think it will be around the seven week mark rather than the >10 weeks that has been recent experience.
  20. This "interest rates are crippling" is an example of repeat until true on this forum. Google very quickly gets you to the above link - https://www.expat.hsbc.com/mortgages/products/buy-to-let/ HSBC are hardly a niche specialist lender.
  21. Well, my passport arrived! We've got some TimTams, Brisbane Heat caps, the predictable Roxy bikinis and RipCurl swimmers. I think a couple of 100 Paracetamol and 96 'brufen packs and some Aussie chocolates would be good. Really don't want to go. Going to be a lot of hard work.
  22. Just to echo that you don't need to go through all this 6months malarky when transiting Singapore. My wife just went to UK and back with a passport that expires in a month or so. Your travel agent is useless. Mine new passport is with DHL. Very easy to go online and order the new one but I maybe shouldn't be flying it quite so close to the wire. I'll know next time.
  23. So I've got a bottle of Green Ant Gin for my sister and that's all I've come up with. Any genius ideas for presents to take back for family, nieces and nephews? Maybe Aussie sports gear?
  24. I'd have thought private hospital cover will be steep. I've been out here as a consultant for almost four years now and I still can't quite work it all out or form an opinion on it. I think specs and dentistry are much better and cheaper here. The dentistry is also MUCH better. I think public care is a bit quicker here than in NHS and there is better access to some drugs, poorer access to others. Some of these are actually life-changing and you'd base moving here or not on them e.g. Trikafta/Kafrtrio for cystic fibrosis has been available in UK for some time but is not on PBS yet whereas I've used Rituximab in a "rescue" situation where I wouldn't have had access in UK. I have used my hospital cover and saved many tens of thousands of dollars personally on mental health care. This wouldn't have been accessible in the public sector or in NHS. TBH I'm not sure I could've got the care I received anywhere in UK for love nor money. So, it's swings and roundabouts really. I'd advise trying to get private cover if you can afford to while the service you receive from public services will probably be a bit better than NHS but very area and condition dependent. If you can afford to pay for the initial consult for a condition privately this can often "get you in" in both countries and speed the process.
