  1. Thanks Cozy! We've not heard anything yet. Who is your CO and how do you know they are off until Monday?? Ours is DP. The OH just suggested offering a carton of extra dry in a non bribey way haha. I think he'll fit it alright!!
  2. Thanks Wen66 I have sent off for a quote. My boxes are already on their way do you think this will be a problem?? I am assuming that as the cover only starts when the self packed boxes are picked up that I have until that time to secure insurance??
  3. Hi everyone, The countdown has begun and we have just under 7 weeks until we take off back to Australia for good. This means that we are now having to think about all the little bits we haven't really thought about before. This forum is such a great place for advice as so many have been through the same move before us so the OH suggested I post on here first before spending hours on the phone trying to figure it out for myself!! Firstly - UK tax return. We both PAYE income tax and my OH is sure that we will be eligible for a tax return as we are finishing out the financial year (he was able to claim on this when we returned from Aus 5 years ago). We have both earnt over the tax free threshold. Has anyone else applied for this, are we able to apply before we finish working as we both only have 2 paychecks left and are both paid a salary therefore we know what is it we will be paid and how much tax we pay each month also. Do refunds only come as cheques or will they pay into an account. Secondly - As we have no intention of returning to UK we want to withdraw our pensions. we have been paying into employer supplemented pensions for a year now. Has anyone else done this? Should we just contact the pension providers in regards to closing our pensions, can they stop us from closing it?? Thirdly - What is the best method of foreign exchange to use?? Due to the industry I work in the local Tesco's gives me a preferred rate of exchange. Should I take advantage of this and change it all into cash in the UK. Or should we take pounds with us to Aus and change it up there?? are the Travelex cards better and just take a little cash?? And Finally - Bank Accounts. We both bank with Metrobank who do have excellent transaction fees when using your card abroad. Is it worth keeping these accounts open? Especially with all of the above in the pipeline we may need it! There are no monthly fees so no need to worry about that but then I have seen people suggest moneycorp accounts, is that due to transaction fees from other banks?? Its a lot for one post I know and I'm sure that over the next few weeks we will think of even more questions, as always your advice is really appreciated!!
  4. Can anyone offer any advice in regards to insuring our boxes?? I have decided to ship with SevenSeas, will they insure them?? I'm not so worried about damage as 'im not shipping anything too fragile, its just if my boxes should somehow get lost... Any info is so appreciated!
  5. Today marks 8 months for us coxy1804... We are so close!! I am hoping for a sooner rather than later grant but I emailed our CO a few weeks back informing him that we are booking flights for Dec 1st (and asking if he could forsee any problems with this). The reply we received was that he intends on granting the visa in November, which I took as a green light to go ahead with flights. It is a relief to know that it's coming at least!! Congrats to everyone who has received their grants and those of you at the 9 month mark.. fingers crossed that your CO's pull theirs out!!
  6. That must be really hard!! We made the decision to extend my UK visa at the same time we made our Oz application it was heart breaking to put off going home (it's been 5 years since i left and I haven't been back) but I am glad I stayed with my partner. All this waiting alone would be horrible!! Hopefully your grant will come through sooner rather than later!
  7. Oh No!! We applied same day as you Coxy!! I was really hoping it would be closer to the 8 month mark...
  8. Congrats NaomiSimone!! You must be so excited! TheEscapePlan and Sandyp you must be so frustrated!! 9 moths your application has been sitting in a pile what more could they need to do!! On the plus side though atleast you know the grant is coming so you can rest easy and start planning your trip, so far as even booking flights?? I would!! Get outta here before the winter sets in!!!
  9. I think the post office will be too expensive from past experiences sending gifts home. Is there anything you cant put in boxes? Ive had a look at sevenseas for a couple of large clothes boxes a couple of large boxes and a book box and its looking at just under £200 which is great, but how can I find out customs fees etc.
  10. Wow so happy for everyone who's grants are coming through!! It is 7 months on Wednesday for us... I thought that the time would drag but it has actually flown by. My CO is DP does anyone else have them?? My partner and I were just discussing last night when the best time would be to inquire on the application status, is it best to wait until the 9 month mark or could we send off closer to the 8 month mark as the letter does say 8-9 months. I really want to be home by December 5th as my extended family have a weekend booked in Nelsons Bay, it would be so great to go as I haven't been home in 5 years!! Fingers crossed for a prompt grant!
  11. I am looking for recommendations on a shipping company to transport my partner and my personal belongings. We are not taking any furniture with us it will mostly be clothes, cosmetics, some electronics eg. small compressor, a large canvas artwork, some books and keepsakes from our travels. I had originally looked at movecube but I'm not sure we would even fill a small container. Also not everything that we are shipping could be put in cardboard boxes so I am not sure how that would go with some of the big shipping companies?? We are due to receive an answer on our VISA by the beginning of November and I want to ship most of our belongings to my parents in October so that they will hopefully be there when we arrive. Any advice or recommendations would be greatly appreciated
  12. Hello All, My Partner has always wanted to complete an apprenticeship in Carpentry but due to his choice to travel and contributing circumstances he has never been able to do it. Now that we are moving to Oz permanently its a great opportunity to do the things we always wanted to do. We will be living with my Parents at first so money isn't really an issue either. Has anyone had any experience finding a Mature Age Apprenticeship in Oz? Any advice we can get would be so appreciated!!:cool:
  13. We chose to apply for the partner visa instead of the prospective marriage visa for two main reasons, 1 - It gives you a 9 month time frame in which to get married, 9 months, and " because from what I understand we would then have to apply for a very similar visa to the partner visa which really increased costs and seemed unnecessary considering we could just apply for this visa and get married whilst on it. Thank you for the info we have lived together the entire length of our relationship as we met whilst travelling so hopefully we will be given this option, I will get my bf to email the CO and find out!
  14. I wasn't aware this was even an option, do they usually only do this for couples that have children or is it anyone they believe to be in a true long term relationship? My partner and I have been together almost 6 years and are planning to get married in 2015 but have no children. Are you aware of any certain criteria needed to waive the temp portion?
  15. Bit of an update; I sent off my application 10/2/14, received an email 14/3/14 from my CO notifying me that he was now in charge of my application and informing us to wait 2-3 months before getting the medical/police checks done, received a letter in the post on 17/3/14 containing our evidence of a true relationship (photo's, bills and correspondence etc.) which was a surprise as I was under the impression we wouldn't get this back, so we emailed the CO who replied that our application was going well and he no longer needed the evidence. All in all I feel a WHOLE lot better now... I hope the next 8-9 months goes quickly!!
  16. Thank you for your reply and you MovingtoTasmania, I know its a waiting game but it is increasingly frustrating how long the process takes. Especially when I cant hep but comparing it to the UK equivalent. I know they aren't the same but when I've been through the process it is difficult not to compare. When you sent off the application did you use an agency or complete it yourselves? My boyfriend is a little worried that they may decline the application if we made a silly mistake on the form. I did triple check both forms before posting them. Has anyone heard any horror stories like this?
  17. Hello, My Partner and I sent off his application for the Partner 309/100 Visa. It was confirmed to have been received and assigned a CO 10/2/2014 after a call to the London High Commission today. They told us that we should expect to hear anything until they need the medical/police check. I have applied for and been granted 3 UK Partner VISAs ( the 1st and 2 extensions) and we always recieved correspondance from the UKBA while it was being processed. Im a bit nervous as our hopes are set and with the cost of the application we cant afford this to fail. we completed the forms ourselves, no agency. Can anyone give me any advice to help me through the next 6+ months (according to the official processing times on immi.gov.au) What should I expect?
