By my reckoning, you already qualify for 189 if you can get the 20 points for English by taking an IELTS or PTE. Age - 25 Language - 20 Qualifications - 15 That's 60

Generally speaking the department only considers post qualification experience when calculating your experience. There have been a number of cases in the past where people have lost points because the department did not allow any pre-qualification experience. I agree with the above post, you can apply to the assessing authority for an 'opinion' on your experience and see what they come up with. This opinion is normally accepted, but the decision rests solely with DIBP.

The Code of safe working practices is in the Dropbox. AHP 20 is not available on PDF, and you'll have to buy it from a chart agent. I got one in the UK fairly easily.

It will all be down to AMSA to provide an assessment for the purposes of migration. The only thing you can do is to apply for the assessment on AMSA form 12 and see what happens. AMSA will also make a determination on the experience that you have and it will be on your letter. You may have to sit the AMSA Orals before they will issue a letter. Yours is an unusual situation, but ensure that what you claim, by way of experience, can be backed up by evidence for DIBP.

It's very difficult to say. I've never heard of anyone in your position yet. I'm trying to figure out if your experience is going to be considered relevant. In an earlier post you say that you were a watchkeeper, is this a commercial vessel watchkeeper? Did you do this qualification overseas?

Immigration are usually happy to accept a stat dec for certain things, including employment experience. You'll be in a better position if you accompany the stat dec with any additional information that you may have. You should be able to claim the experience when you were a watchkeeper as this is is considered a closely related occupation.

Impossible to say. Average is 2-3 months, some a lot quicker, some a lot slower. Take a look at the migration forum and see what the current applicants are discussing.

I'm really not sure what your question is. You need to travel to australia to take the oral exam, and you need a valid certificate of competency to do so. If you attempt to sit the Orals after your certificate has expired then you may not be eligible for the examination. Id recommend doing the STCW 2010 continued competence and revalidate your Indian CoC, and then book the oral once you have it.

Hi Martin, Difficult to tell you about possibilities for engineers as its not my area of expertise. So I would suggest starting a new thread for anything specifically related to marine engineering. In the meantime I'll address some of the general queries. 1. A lot of seafarers are out of work at the present moment, so it's not easy to find a job, although you can find work deep sea easily enough. 2. If your certificate isn't recognised then you will not be able to be employed aboard Australian registered ships unless you can obtain an AMSA certificate, which may entail going through a full course. International certificates are generally accepted by foreign companies, but Australian companies will most likely insist on Australian certificates whether or not their ships are registered there. It may be worth asking the friends that are on 457's for advice regarding employment.

Sadly, jobs are extremely thin on the ground at the moment. A horrendous amount of people are being made redundant at this current time and the job pages are bare. Sorry.

I've not heard of anyone getting employment reduced because of time spent at maritime college, and I definitely didn't have any issues. But, if someone does then they could attempt to use this piece of international legislation as a defence, so thanks for posting it. It obviously would not work if a seafarer was not employed by a company during the college course. Regardless of what the MLC says, if a person is not employed, then they won't meet the DIBP employment criteria for that period.
