  1. Hi folks So we are continuing our search for a place to stay when we arrive in Sydney this May. We have heard a lot of people saying places like the Shire are great, but they are borderline for our budget for a place to actually buy. As a result we have been looking at places like Campbelltown and Penrith, but when we told a family friend this earlier today (the live in Sydney), they said to avoid these places as all they ever hear about those areas is related to gangs and shootings. I am a little worried by this comment, but I am also suspicious it may be a gross over stating of the truth. So can anyone help me with their thoughts on these two places? We have been looking at places like Glen Alpine and Mount Annan in the Campbelltown area and a range of spots in Penrith. I am guessing some parts are lovely, but others are not. What areas should I stick to or avoid? I know I have asked questions related to these areas in the past, but the comments from this friend perturbed me. Any thoughts welcome! Cheers.
  2. Hi. I am not sure what your salary will actually be in Australia, but Sydney is very expensive as far as I can tell, and I personally would not be keen on coming across if that was the ballpark. Will your wife be working? You should check out realestate.com.au and domain.com.au to see the prices. I have found you will struggle to find much worth living in for anything less than around $500 a week.
  3. Hi, we are a small family of four (to be), who are hoping to be moving over around June time. I am not sure what part of Sydney we will be living in, but the North Shore seems very expensive so I think we are more likely to end up in the shire or someplace like that. Would still be great to make friends (especially for my wife), we have a 10 month old girl and my wife is due to give birth to our second girl in May. We also have two dogs who will be joining us shortly, a cocker spaniel and a minature shnauser. Would be great to keep in touch with folks going through the same thing!
  4. Hi folks I am looking into purchasing a car when I get to Australia (in a few months). I am going to need to buy something decent as we have two small children and I want something safe and reliable for my wife. I am thinking having looked at prices I am hoping I can get some kind of finance with a budget of about $600 a month. Can anyone recommend any good dealers or used car places that offer good deals on finance, and also what kind of deposit you need to put down, or credit history you need to demonstrate to get car finance? Ideally I would like to get either a wagon, or a SUV like a Holden Captiva or a Commodore Wagon. If anyone has any ideas or recommendations I am all ears! As a random aside, I have heard Australia does not have ISOFIX seatbelt points in their cars, is that true? Cheers, Andrew
  5. I am 33, and I have honestly never met anyone apart from my family with that second name!
  6. Hi I had never thought of family benefit as part of migration, but now you mention it I suppose I may as well ask. We will be coming across, and my wife will be staying at home with our 2 daughter (one is 9 months, the other will be born in May). In the UK I have just lost all of our child benefit due to the old salary cap. Is the Australian system means calculated or flat? I will be earning a good wage in Australia (around $120k), so I am wondering if we will be able to avail of any benefits, as this may really help ensure my wife can stay at home and look after the kids.
  7. I think it depends on what the car is, just like any place. Some cars hold there value better than others, some are niche etc, so you probably need to work out what the demand is for the particular car you own.
  8. Hi, I think it could be a possibility, sounds like a good idea, and as long as I bring a car that appears to be popular it could just work!
  9. It is actually quite handy to have found out you need to own your own car for 12 months before bringing it out, as I had at least planned to buy a car here and bring it with me, given the price difference. Thank you as ever folks.
  10. Ha ha, thank you. I am not trying to get round taxes or anything like that, so if I had to pay a levy to do it I would if you were allowed. It seemed like a very simple idea to me, but I was pretty sure there would be a reason why it would not work!
  11. Hi, so to ship a car to Australia, I have to have owned it for 12 months? If not would I have to pay a tax of some kind or is it just not allowed? I could bring a golf, you never know I may end up taking orders! lol
  12. Hi I am hoping someone can point out a flaw in my logic someplace, please help! I am thinking about how to transfer my £ equity to Australia to get the best deal I can. The exchange rate is not great, so I was thinking of alternatives. What I have noticed is that the price of some cars in Australia is very high, compared to the UK. An example I have is a friend of mine who is currently selling a car in the UK for £17k. In Aus I have found the exact same car for sale at around £45k. Now I know shipping and taxes at will eat up maybe £5k, but still that is a double your money scenario. I am thinking that instead of transferring cash, I purchase vehicles I know are worth a lot of money in Aus and ship them. Then convert the value in Australia. There must be some flaw to my cunning plan, or surely everyone would do this, does anyone know what the flaw is? Cheers, Andrew
  13. Hi Dave, I am looking at places around Sydney to live at the moment and Padstow doesnt sound like a bad place, seems quite reasonable money for what you get.
  14. They used to write the same stuff about Ireland. Look what happened there!
  15. Hi, we havent actually formally kicked off the process as yet, so I just wanted to see if I could get ahead of the curve. My worry is I think there is a piece of legislation in the UK that requires you to hold information for no longer than 6 years, so I am nervous that my employers from years ago may not have a record of me. Hopefully that wont be an issue. I will check the list out also. Thanks for your help!
  16. That doesnt sound very pleasant for the pup! My cocker loves to lie around outside when it is hot here, but the heat in Australia may test her. I doubt we will get the Schnauser out of the house as he is the laziest dog you will ever meet.
  17. Hi I am in the process of getting sponsorship with a 457 visa with a Bank in Sydney. I was wondering what the process is for demonstrating my experience and skills? I presume I will have to provide proof of my degree, but I am not sure about previous roles? I am a bit worried as I cannot remember the exact start and end dates of some of my previous jobs (I know roughly), and I am not sure how exact they are, or what proof they need. Any thoughts would be welcome. Thanks, Andrew
  18. Hi - Thanks, can anyone confirm if that is true? It certainly makes it a lot more appealing to look for a new house!
  19. Hi This may be a stupid question, but as I search around for more details on relocating I am coming across information on a First Time Buyers grant in NSW. It appears to be very generous ($15k up to Jan 14) and $10k normally. What I dont know is if this grant is open to new residents on a 457 visa. Technically I will be a first time buyer, but I it sounds to good to be true to get some help from the government (seeing as I get nothing from my own government here in the UK for anything). Does anyone know what the rules are around this? I am assuming I will be on a 457 initially with an aim to get a PR asap. My budget for the house is up to $650k which appears to be the cap for the grant. Any guidance appreciated.
  20. Thanks, I dont necessarily want to borrow that much, but it is good to know what your max limit is. I appreciate the link.
