Thanks for that -I did remember after I wrote it that a friends sister was pr but lived overseas for several years -she came back to renew her visa but was told no so she had to take citizenship but could not leave Oz for 2 years in the interim Thats not word for word mind but more or less as it happened Think my son had not had problems renewing because he lives here Luckily when we went back in 2001 we had taken citizenship so avoided the problems

I think that part of the problem is that people in the UK have a 'vision ' of Oz and nothing can shake it -like one comment was made when I was back ontime as in Where is your suntan er its winter in SA They think they know the country and dont because you cane never know Australia until you have lived here
-
Is your return residency visa not permanent - my son was 15 when we emigrated in 1982 and still has not been naturalised ( no particualar reason he just has not ) he gets a rr visa in his UK passport each time it runs out Have never thought that one day they might say no more rr visas Is the possiblity your visa might not be renewed just because your in the UK -just curious as to the intricasies of it all

It was not BT i meant its the Oz telecommunications thingy -dont know its proper name I am sure I read some time ago the fine was around $10,000.oo -something silly and I know there is a caught but then again !
-
I was not getting worked up on fish and chips my comment was to comapre prices for a similar item
-
the fine is supposdely in $$$$$ for using a phone thats not 'legal'

Cost us $28 for four hours in the city -Adelaide -no wonder we dont go into the city !!
-
food is much cheaper in the UK trust me we travel back regularly and cant believe how cheap it is compare $18.50 for fish and chips to 3.99 GBP -I know fac is takeway but we tend to "eat out " when on hols

http://www.simplyhired.com.au/a/jobs/list/q-bricklayer Try this site and see whats available there In SA you need to be licensed by the department of consumer affairs not sure if WA has the same conditions

I think the rate you get paid has something to do with the date you left the UK not quite sure how that one works -hubby gets 54 GBP he retired in 2008 when the full UK pension was around 80 something GBP I get 60% of his pension now - i worked for years in the UK but paid the married womens stamp as they called it back then -this was on government advice at the time My pension in my own right amounts to 3p (honest ) a week which was paid annually when i turned 60 but once hubby turned 65 I could claim on his pension contributions

Is it worth bringing a washing machine and tumble drier?
patsmb replied to North to South's topic in Household
Front loaders are normally more economical with water anayway so perosnally I would say yes bring them as it will cost you for a decent washer here in Oz -
Could you not transfer it to a UK acount in one hit then draw out as you need over there -carrying cash is increasingly dodgy we got mugged in Malaysia in August luckliy not a huge amount of cash but still distressing
-
It was explained to me that they class your living here between the age of 16 and retirement as working life even if you dont work -sorry I maybe did not explain that very well
-
If you worked in the UK and paid full NI then you should be entitled to a pension nut its 'frozen' at the rates of you emigration date We emigrated 1982 when OH was 38 and he had worked since being 16 so now gets 54 gbp a week The amount depends on how many years worked
-
We never surrendered ours -we left 1982 and when we went back in 2001 exchanged the old green licence for a photo id one -there is still a paper attachment though and I think most of the old ones its 70 not 75 when it needs to be renewed annually
-
Must admit we have an SUV but we also dont live close to public transport so need to use the car
-
Sons electric bill was $1800 for a quarter and you will probably use far more petrol here in Oz because of the distances -you cant really compare it to the cost of petrol in the UK as normally you would not travel as far as you do hear - we spend around $70 a week and we dont work thats just to and fro to shops etc !

Live in Adelaide and our house was Baltic in winter as we live in the foothills first winter we froze second winter we installed gas ducted heating - I would love a 'proper' central heating sustem though with radiators Last winters gas bill was over $600 but we were warm - we are retired so home a lot Our house is brick veneer and no double glazing so gets warm quickly and cold even quicker ! I am from the North of England and wont say it gets as cold here as it does there but last winter I did wear a sheepskin coat at times -outdoors that is !
