Any advice appreciated on Sans Souci area
walkerfamily123 replied to Belle1's topic in New South Wales
So i can big up Sans Souci because i live there. Airport noise is fine in Sans Souci (I wouldnt live in Brighton Le Sands if you want low noise) To get in the city you either get the bus which is around 45/50 minutes, or the train from Kogarah which is about 20 minutes and the bus to and from Kogarah is about 10 minutes. The area itself is lovely, local shops Coles, Superburn within walking distance, great local butcher at Ramsgate shops. Ramsgate has an organic foodies market every saturday which is a great place to pick up for good gluten free / palio food. The beach is nice, lovely walking along on a night, gets a bit busy on a weekend with west'ies. Brighton Le Sands is about a 45 minute walk with lots of nice restaurants. Swimming at the beach in netted off areas or there is a local leisure centre near taren point bridge which has an olympic size pool. People in the area are friendly, but the house prices are sharply on the rise! Westgate at Miranda or Hurstville is around a 15 minute drive, Cronulla is around a 20 minute drive and the airport is around 10 minutes drive. -
We are a young married couple who have been living in Australia now for just over a year. Myself (29) and my wife (28) moved over here together in Sept 2012 and have managed to gain stable full-time employment. We are looking to find some local friends, round about our age, to go out for drinks, coffee or whatever.

We had a problem when we arrived here. Neither me or my wife could get a job in our field. In the end i accepted a non-skilled job to get by.....we did both get jobs in our feild eventually

walkerfamily123 replied to DAWNRACH's topic in New South Wales
I would agree, If you are willing to live in Cambeltown i would rather travel the little bit extra and live in Wollongong! -
Hi guys i am wondering if anyone can reccomend the best way to send back 1 box to the UK I would imagine it will be 40 x 40 x 40 and about 6kg. Its Christmas presents so i have a good 2 months for it to get there. Even if i have to break it down to a few seperate packages, that will be fine also. Any help appreciated. Thanks Phil

Yes you can get home delivery service from Wollies in Caringbah, but it does cost $13.99 if you spend $99. You can do click and collect aswell. You will be a short bus ride from Westfields Miranda - they have a Wollies, IGA, ALDI and various other independent shops. round trip bus fair will be around $6

Reference letters - common or not?
walkerfamily123 replied to Joanna82's topic in Careers and Vacancies
Most companies over hear like to ring and get a direct reference so they talking to the company/manager you worked for. My wife had written references and no companies would accept them.....also they didnt like e-mail references If your manager is nice you could ask for a contact number for them to ring direct for the next year or so. -
They use a calculation to let you know what payments need to be made. for 2012 they have AUD - GBP exchange 0.643819 Therefore if you earned $60,000 in Aus it would be equivilent of 38629.14 pound Then you get a tax free threshold of 15795 Take one from the other and you have to pay 9% of the difference back per year (Therefore 2055.07....or 171.25 per month) I found that the best way to do it was to pay a years worth in a lump then save the AUD each month and wait for a good exchange rate to transfer a years worth at once. You can set it up to transfer from and australian bank but the exchange rate will change from month to month.

good luck! Hope you enjoy Australia......

Try NRMA they are very established and well priced. They give you quite large discounts for insuring your home contents, car and CTP with them.

Just realised that my UK passport is due to expire in March next year. To renew it from Australia is going to cost $282.21....WTF!! :arghh:

gumtree is probably your best bet. you will be able to find a share house within 15 minutes of the centre from between $100pw to $300. However if you want to be really flash there is apartment shares in the city for around $350 to $550.

mobile phone, broadband and landline providers, any ideas please?
walkerfamily123 replied to SGHJLL's topic in Household
I have found that virgin are good for fixed price $19 (your get $250 credit and 250mb data) To txt the UK i have used Whatsapp messanger, it uses a tiny bit of data instead of credit (also you can send pictures through it for no extra cost). Also if you have a smartphone you can connect it to your wifi whhen in range and it doesnt even use your mobile data. When we arrived we got Telstra phone and internet.....but it is expensive and a 24month contract. I paid my way out of the contract and signed up with YesOptus 300gb internet, homephone and tv for $110 a month for 12 month
