  1. Have a quick look and see how much bike rego is over here..... You may well fall off your chair. Nearly $800 bucks for me this year. And no, it can't be justified in any way, at all - ever. Pure robbery.
  2. First, note that my comments are a form of public service – a lot of people think I am a negative nelly. Not the case. I just like to highlight the real world to people as a pose to what channel 4 tells you. Immigration in Aus is a business, a very very big business. Google the term ‘population ponzi’ and have a read of some definitions. Your agent couldn’t care less if there are 800,000 unemployed people in Aus already as they are in business – they want to take your money. There are two main big businesses in Aus, what is referred to as the ‘politico housing complex’ also known as the FIRE sector and the core finance industry – that’s it. Aus is going through a massive set of alterations at the moment, primarily due to ‘dutch disease’ which is basically an over reliance on one industry (iron ore mining) at the detriment of others. The days of being able to come here and have a life that is ‘better’ than that in the UK no longer apply – they really really don’t. It is nice and sunny and warm – that’s it. Some examples; In NSW you will pay around $1200 bucks to register the car – then with the exception of a tiny minority, all new roads that are being built are toll roads…… That’s just 1x example of how the country is changing….. 100% not for the better IMO. Note, IMO.
  3. I really don't get it how people will try and convince them selves that Perth isn't mega mega mega expensive. From someone who has lived in Australia for nearly 9 years and spent 1 year in Perth....... If you move to Perth you will find it very very very expensive to the point where you will stop doing alot of the social activities you do in the UK because of it. There it is in black and white. Doesn't mean the place isn't nice - it is, just trust the people on this forum that have been here a while for once. The reason they seem to be 'anti' Perth or what-ever is literally that reason; the costs. Also, sounds like you may be twisting the truth a touch there at 15 quid for a pint and a wine. Please also remember that it is just another country. Channel 4 may tell you it is a paradise on earth and I'm sure Phil Spencer is still selling his property based TV franchise on the back of an Aussie utopia - it isn't. For example, when I was in Perth; 1) House broken into from the front to access the yard and steal my dirt bikes 2) Returned to finish off the house the next week 3) Randoms spray painted the ute while parked outside the house a few weeks later 4) Left the car in a secure multistory one Friday night in the city (had a couple of $12 buck pints). Totally destroyed the next day.......... With a parking ticket on it! My advice to anyone would be to have a look in your own backyard first or - that other big back yard you have called Europe. For the price of a deposit on a tin shed here you could pick up a little place in Eastern Europe or Portugal etc.....
  4. This should be your main warning sign for the Northern Beaches; "on a Saturday this takes 45min" Reality = you can't expect to work in the CBD and live anywhere other than very close to the Manly ferry. This will be central London expensive.
  5. This is a very important post and should be read by people coming to this forum looking to move here. That recession that the UK and the USA had which Australia dodged - it's here.......
  6. Why are you looking at house prices when you haven't even moved here yet? You should be far more concerned about the price of rents. Remember, a large element of the Aussie economic model is based on what is referred too as a 'population ponzi' meaning an ever increasing number of new entrants to 'prop up' the pyramid. The vested interests in this would like nothing more than for you to come over with a wad of nice pound notes, drop $30k on stamp duty to buy a massively over inflated property - stay here for 18 months and then bugger off back to the UK when you decide Sydney is a bit of a crap shoot. Don't be the next sheep / fool.
  7. Here's how you fly business, anywhere in the world. WARNING - you will need to use your brain. Take the deposit you were going to spend on a bubble priced house in Australia, or an 'investment house' what-ever that means here. Buy 1x outright and 2x 80% LVR properties in the USA. Purchase and manage those via a company structure in the USA. Funnel all the proceeds i.e. net cash flow into the company bank account. Next time you need to go to the UK / USA or where-ever - break out the company debit card and purchase your business class flight. Also use the same card for your Audi A4 / Camero rental at destination. Or, you could just do what everyone else does...........
  8. This lad knows what they are on about... London is rubbish. My advice; Edinburgh or Newcastle Upon Tyne. April / May arrival = perfect.
  9. Hya, can I ask why you want to move here? Hint - the answer shouldn't contain the following; 1) More options for the kids 2) Anything Phil Spencer has said or done 3) Weather 4) Anything you have watched on Channel 4 regards Australia, specifically containing titles like....... 'Wanted' or 'Living' or 'Relocating'
  10. Agreed, I don't say 'G'Day'. Tried it once and felt like a right turd.
  11. I am called 'pommy <name>' to all the lads I ride with.......
  12. Nah, not really - just funny seeing someone moan about getting sunburnt over here is all.... Plenty to moan about but a morbid fear of getting burnt doesnt rate high. Drivers, price of beer, boguns, house prices, toll roads, mega heat in the summer yeah. Sunburn, no. Is Phil Spencer telling everyone that the ozone has been fixed now along with the streets being paved with gold? hahahahahahh I sign off my texts to the group of lads I ride dirt bikes with as 'pommy <name>'. Who cares.
  13. I'd like to enter this into the 'whining pom of the year' award please.....
  14. Our Mam took us to a place in the Lakes and I had a flat white (was suprised to see it on the menu) which I swear was as good as a Melb cafe.... Honest. I even said to the lass and she commented that they get about 1x Aussie / Pom on holidays that say that a week. Funny
  15. Hya Aunt, Good question - see I love both places equally so that is a very hard question. Cos I came over here pretty young - 26, I am starting to have the opportunity to not be tied to one country TBH (that includes Texas, too) so I guess the answer would be no, not perm. Good few years maybe, but I am pretty confident that I will bounce between places for the rest of my life! Trick is to not get saddled with a 800k debt in any country - you are then free as a bird really :-)
  16. Glad I could be of assistance! Only downside was the flight; I wouldn't do the cheap Royal Brunei again. Nowt against the plane or service, just too many stops and too many arabs.
  17. Hi All, Thought I'd pen down my thoughts and experiences having returned from a pretty whirlwind visit back to the North (Lake District, Newcastle, Durham, Teesside) two weeks ago. Was going to meet up with Missus B but alas she was away.... Driving Got one of those new Merc A class as my rental. LESS than half a tank of diesel from LHR to me Mam's in Wigton, Cumbria..... Unbelievable. Averaged 90mph on the motorway (except 50 zones, obviously) and 100% absolutely loved it. People moving over, people flashing to let you in etc etc. Mega. Loads of flashy cars and heaps more Landcrusiers than I thought (those people must be minted to run them in UK). Pretty busy roads but found the quality very good pretty much everywhere. People Outside of London - great. Random conversations with people at the bar or the servo or where-ever! Prices Average of 3.30 quid a pint. (was drinking little creatures pale in Newcastle for 3.00 a bottle - yep, cheaper than Oz) Diesel ~ 1.32 a litre Coffee (expensive) 3.00 quid Food ~ 10 quid a main at a run of the mill pub (in the lakes) 5 quid for a bag of fish n chips at Marshalls, Tynemouth Countryside AWESOME!!!!!!!!! Man o man, I can't believe how much of a beaut the North is. Villages, village pubs - it is just stunning. Newcastle Few more trendy places now - heaps of micro brewery places too. Friendly faces and pretty girls - just how I remembered it. Was dead quiet for a Thursday night down the quayside though like.. Tynemouth has some dead set super cool little cafe's / bars now. Reminds me of Brunswick or somewhere..... Surf was crap though. Overall impression - don't underestimate the power of your birth place roots. The north of England is a complete stunner and the people are ace........... End of story.
  18. Dude, That is some serious prep! Some observations; Rent – I would budget around 1,800 a month for something OK. Date night – Triple your initial figure (it is about AUD$10 a beer here ay, AUD$8 a wine too) Phones – Double that Salary – Mate, you are selling yourself short there. Expect at least 40k Groceries – Add more for beers / wine. A six pack is AUD$20 here mate!!!!!
  19. Hya Lindor, Sounds great that like…. I think I may have seen some pictures you put up on here actually. Yeah, we will be doing sommat similar on Thursday and possibly Friday night like. Also I want to go that cheap Italian place at the bottom end of grey street as I always used to get there for the happy hour 7.50 quid pasta dish… Then across the road to that old boozer on the corner with the wooden chairs in the window (can never remember the name like). Man I am looking forward to being back in the North East. Other stuff I intend to do; Drive at approx. 96mph on the motorway Go for a surf at Tynemouth and not worry about being eaten Get a chippy tea from; Marshalls & ……… THE MAGPIE (to include mushy peas and a pot of tea, of course). Have a pint at the stuffed dog
  20. Hya All, Just thought I'd let ya'll know that I am flying to Newcastle # 1 next week and very much looking forward to the crac with the lads! My mate is getting married in Durham so means I will be getting to knock about in the Toon, then the lake district, then Durham city. We are a very lucky mob us lot you know. Get to leave one awesome place and arrive in another and miss out all the mess in-between. As can be assumed - I will be camping out in the various (awesome) pubs of each locale above and generally attempting to try all the locally produced beers / ales plus eat as many beef n ale pies I can. Some favs (people from the NE / North Yorkshire); The Cluny Beck Hole Tynemouth Keswick Saltburn by the sea Danby ............................. Have VW Golf TDI (rental), will travel :-)

    Hi

Hey Buddy, Not at all trying to be a negative nelly here but if you havent been following the news in Aus - the entire automotive industry is in the process of closing down. I am not trying to be over hyped here; it is literally the whole industry. Ford in Geelong = 2016 gone Holden in Adelaide = 2017 gone Toyota in Melbourne = 2017 gone If you have a career and specific skills in that field I would really have a bit of a think and do some research before commiting to anything mate. There is gonna be a shed load of auto workers on the prowl very shortly. Again, sorry to be negative but this question really stood out to me as a bit of a danger sign..... Hope this helps.
  22. Don't sell your house..... Rent it out. That way you have a backup if, haven forbid - you decide you prefer Europe / the UK more than Aus. (don't believe the TV, lots of people do like the UK...... And some even go back - shock, horror)
  23. Only stupid, un-educated people would buy an over inflated liability in the capital cities of Australia. You have answered your question yourself - it is significantly cheaper to rent; that's because we are in the throws of an end game bubble. Most people who live in these $700,000 couldn't afford them either so don't worry. Don't be a sheep, next fool, and get swept up in it. As an example, this is what I have done; 1) Beach house down the coast which is permanently on airbnb hence 100% deductible 2) Small portfolio in Texas returning 12 - 18% a year 3) Small shack in the bush - 100% paid for 4) Rent a 2x bedder in one of the flashest areas of Melb which costs less than half it would to buy it Don't be the next usury slave / fool
  24. Don't even consider the big houses in the outer brubs if you are going to be working in the CBD. Take the hit on the mental rents in the inner burbs and enjoy it..... Outer burbs of Melb as a commuter are utter gash. Develop a liking for 'cafe culture'.... Don't expect to be invited out to the pub with workmates, and if you are - expect to pay 6 quid a pint. Prepare yourself for the driving - just think southern europe but far, far more hostile..... It's basically like entering a war zone.
