  1. It's bloody great mate. Who wouldn't want to live in the best country on earth.
  2. We came to Frankston as 10 pound poms. It's a great place. Beautiful beach, great shopping, on the Melbourne train line. South Frankston is the best area. Avoid Frankston North.
  3. I've been there once and loved it. But it would probably be too dull and boring for some PIO members.

    Too Hot!

Oz has a variety of climate zones there is a place to suit everyone.
  5. Your wife could do the Disability Care Certificate IV to become qualified. My wife is half way through this course at the moment. It is short a course that would qualify her to work in Aged or Disability Care. The pay is good and big wage rises have been promised over the next few years. If she wanted to do weekend work the rate is about $50 an hour.
  6. Maybe for some Oz is not challenging enough. Oz is not really a foreign or exotic country. English is the language, The Queen is the head of state, the Union Jack is on the flag, the government, laws and institutions are all British in origin. It is too easy to settle down and fit right in, which is what most of us want. If you want bright lights, loud music, cheap booze and plenty of sleaze you should be in Thailand.
  7. I now find myself using this one - instead of "goodbye" or "see you later" it's "see ya when I'm looking at ya".
  8. I've been here so long no one picks me as a pom. I think I've got a very neutral accent. What I notice from British TV shows is how bad the young generation sound. "Th" has been replaced with "f' - fink, fing and fought not think, thing and thought. And the letter "h" has become obsolete - horrible is now orrible.

    Tea bags!

It's not the tea, it's the water. It depends where you are in Oz. For instance Adelaide has terrible "hard" water - not only is it difficult to get a lather up when shampooing - it also makes a terrible cup of tea. The only solution is to buy a good quality water from the supermarket to use for tea making.
  10. Kalgoorlie would be a culture shock to ordinary Australians let alone a Pom from Kent.

    Hi guys..

Marry an Oz sheila. I've heard there are women who will do this if you are a nice generous man.
  12. No, but my missus has her heart set on buying a suite in a ski lodge at Falls Creek. A bargain at $44,500 she says.
  13. Seven weeks before the official start of winter and it is snowing in the Victorian high country. Mt Baw Baw has enough snow for skiing.
  14. My wife and I both have had Mitsubishi cars for the last 12 years they have been the most reliable cars we have ever had. Avoid Holden and Ford and European makes.
  15. Melbourne if you like having four seasons and plenty of festivals and sporting events. Sunshine Coast for perfect weather and laid-back lifestyle.
  16. Well said. Queensland voters were just expressing what the whole of Australia thinks of the Labor party. The fact that a democratically elected Queenslander prime minister was knifed by Bill Shorten and his cronies didn't help the matter. Bill Shorten will stop at nothing - he got rid of Rudd and has set Gillard up as the sacrificial lamb. It won't surprise me if he gets rid of Gillard before the next election.
  17. For pier fishing get a couple of cans of fishy catfood, mix it up with some bread and stuff it in an old stocking or similar. Hang it over the side of the pier so it's about 1 metre down in the water. Give it a jiggle every now and then to disperse the berley a little. Then wait for fish to be attracted. I've had success with this method.. Fish an hour each side of a tide change. Hanging a berley bag overnight in your fishing spot can ensure there are fish around when you get there.
  18. You won't get away from British politicians by coming here. The prime minister is a Welsh immigrant and the opposition leader is an English immigrant. Both of them are crap!
  19. Probably the weirdest thing I've eaten is dugong. It is a rare, protected sea mammal that only aborigines are allowed to catch. We met some aborigines near Darwin who had caught one and gave us some to try. It was delicious very much like roast beef.
  20. Seems a common problem with teenage girls. Usually getting a boyfriend solves the problem.
  21. I actually thought Snowtown was very good. They managed to capture the gritty realism of the people and their way of life. Although it didn't really make it clear that the motive for the murders was to find people on welfare pensions, torture them to get the numbers to their bankcards then kill them and keep collecting their pensions. When you consider only two of the cast had previous acting experience it deserved the awards it received.
  22. I've been using the local library DVD collection to improve my knowledge of Oz film history. Here's my list of best and worst. What's yours? Best: Wake in Fright The Castle Bad Boy Bubby Muriel's Wedding Lantana The Club Don's Party Strictly Ballroom Moulin Rouge The Black Balloon Love Serenade Newsfront Worst: Crocodile Dundee Alvin Purple Australia Welcome to Woop Woop Wolf Creek Wog Boy The Adventures of Barry McKenzie Priscilla Queen of the Desert Stork Mad Max
  23. I love Oz and couldn't live anywhere else now. I've met hundreds of fellow poms over the years and not one of them has regretted coming here.
  24. Those blokes are a blight on Australia. Thank God we don't have to put up with them in Melbourne. The radio station MTR closed down a couple of weeks ago in Melbourne. They had been trying to do the 2GB style Labor party bashing format for a couple of years. Melbourne people rejected it and so did the advertisers resulting in the station going broke and closing down.
