Just trying to sort out as much as possible before he moves - we all know how 'busy' emigrating is
-
Hi, yes, I know this is POMS in OZ and we are POMS, but just thought someone maybe able to point us in the right direction. Son is moving from Australia to Ireland for work - he needs an Irish Bank Account, but we're not sure how to get one set up from here - any advice and which Irish Banks are reasonable (I was going to say good, but they're Banks lol). He does have UK and Australian accounts TIA Caroline

Just pondering - at the moment you have to apply for an exemption to leave Australia. But if you're not an Australian passport holder ie on PR or a visa, and hold a UK passport - can you actually be prevented from leaving? Just random thinking - and yes, I know they can make it difficult to get back..........
-
thanks everyone - its really helpful to get everyones thoughts - we'll keep talking and seeing what everyone thinks - thanks again so much
-
Thanks for the information - theres a lot of talking back and forth, but at the moment both girls want to go, although I know that can change. Im wondering how moving my daughter from year 10 here, into a school in the UK, has anyone any experiences of that thanks

We were thinking of returning in the next 21/2 years when eldest (now 18) has finished uni and youngest (now 16), school. Has anyone moved back with teenagers of this age? It may now be brought forward due to family circumstances and we're wondering about re-entering education in the UK, both in High School and Uni. Looking at moving back to Scotland - any advice? thanks

just talked to a travel agent and it seems because of the new lower caps airlines are cancelling whole flights - its a bit of a mess tbh

https://www.abc.net.au/news/2020-11-26/flights-to-be-announced-australians-home-christmas-coronavirus/12923656 here's the news about getting Aussies home - its not personally a problem for me - but its horrendous for children missing their parents etc
-
definitely a quarantine problem - basically there area maximum of 5000 places per week for the whole country - thats why not everyone could get back initially - some people have been bumped off flights 5 times and your talking a month plus wait each time. The airlines only get told 2 days before flying how many they are allowed to land with - this has been as low as 70 and yes, airlines have done this simply to get people home. Basically the govt dont want people to know that theyre not getting Aussies home - eden when Scomo said come home, by that time - flights had stopped and other countries were going into lockdown Its not as simple as people should have got on flights as some would like to think
-
you misunderstand calgary - thats my point precisely - I was there we all helped - no-one left behind as such. So why not help these Aussies stranded abroad - there are flights - theyre just getting bumped because there aren't enough quarantine facilities - what's the difference between these Aussies stranded and those stranded by fire flood etc - in my opinion nothing - we should help them all - theyre not all asking for money - most just want to stop getting bumped off flights because there aren't enough quarantine places
-
My point exactly Dusty - you're picking and choosing which Aussies you help - me I help any Aussie stuck - thats the Aussie spirit - I know Aussies helped each other during fire and floods I was there - but I'll not turn my back on an Aussie - I dont pick and choose -
-
Interesting the comments on here - I guess what some are saying is that if you are abroad and have been unable to get back (even though Scomo said he'd get you back before Christmas) - its just tough luck. Initial advice was if you had job etc etc stay put - but for many thats changed Im sure many of us thought the situation would be resolved by now. Still I guess its like living in the bush with a fire risk or living in a flood area - if your house gets burnt down or you get flooded out - your fellow Aussies aren't going to help - cause you chose to live there. Not the Aussie spirit I know - you dont just look after yourself

Thanks very much - we just need to be near the city for university and we quite happy to go further north if thats better - anyone have any recommendation on schools

Hi, we're looking to move from the Gold Coast (we've been here 8 years), up to the Brisbane area. We would like between 3-5 acres for our horses and we have a girl who'll be attending UQ and a girl moving into year 10. Any recommendations on areas to look at and schools - private or public? Any areas to avoid? Being near the airport would be ok as being near the sea, but neither are essential. A community feel (we came from a small village in the UK) would also be great - but not essential thanks
-
thanks - but I actually was transferring it direct from my UK bank to the Australian one - does that make a difference?
-
Im getting conflicting opinions (of cousrse!) which is better to transfer money from the UK to Australia in pounds or dollars? Im confused

I think my husband completed the 17 year olds on her behalf or they did it together - he's not yet completed his and the 14 year olds
-
as far as I know and we're in the process of applying - 16 and under go on a parents application, my 17 year has had to apply in her own right
-
As far as I know people were told to return a few weeks ago I know my friend did - not sure what the flight situation is now maybe contact the British consul? Sorry cant be more help
-
Does anyone know which would apply to my daughter aged 16 - so doesn't have to take the test - thanks
-
Im wondering what the timeline is like for the Gold Coast QLD for someone who doesn't need to take the test (over 60 and 16 years) thanks

it doesn't just depend on your illness and cost to treat it, it also depends on how valuable your particular skill is to Australia. Some of us have got visas, but its a very long journey, and your skills really need to be something that Australia is really short off. As well as the length of time you've specialised in your field, your level of experience. I dont know anyone who has done it without an agent. Personal experience, I wouldn't think twice about using one, a specialised one like the ones on here.

thank you - can my son apply from abroad - I think he'll be back before but just want to check - he has been back since being abroad
