  1. Location might help...! Sent from my HTC_PN071 using Tapatalk 2
  2. I use to live just north of hornsby and commute into N Sydney (I now live in Adelaide) Look in places like Mt Colah, Kuringai, and Berowra. You are right on the end of the local train services so 30min to N Ryde and certainly at berowra you'll get under your budget. Once you go past berowra to Brooklyn, gosford, etc, its only two trains an hour (max) but you change at Hornsby so still manageable. It's a beautiful part of the world, right on the bush edge with fantastic parks and waterways.
  3. Be careful of etax, as I'd just moved state and was away from my old accountant I tried etax. This years return was little different from last years when I put it in, but after a shed load if silly emails, my refund kept going down and they won't tell me why they are changing the deductions. Had 7k last year, should have had 7k this year, looks like will end up with 4k. The conspiracy theorist in me wonders about this.
  4. Mmmmm. Millibands, raised by the London communist elite, but sent to expensive 'non-selective' state schools that few can get into. Such as Blair sending his kids to the local comp called the Oratory.
  5. This thread is just hilarious. It is just left wing commie student stereotype farce..... I grew up as a student in south London in the late 80's with beret wearing beatnic freedom fighters, and it sounded the same. There is a totally blinkered approach from many that refuse to accept that benefits are a support mechanism designed to be 'short term' to prevent poverty while someone needs work, help, etc. the argument seems to be that benefits are a right and a choice, and you can be selective about whether you accept a job 'if it suits' or stay on benefits until the right opportunity comes along. Or, for a small minority, accept benefit as a lifestyle choice. And regarding the bedroom 'tax'. It is not a tax. That's a bbc/guardian misrepresentation. Tenants are only being given benefit for the space they 'need' if they 'want' a bigger house, why should taxpayers fund it. Cutting a public payment is not a tax. Taking cash from money I earn is tax. Again, it's a confusion about what social housing is for. It was intended to be a support for those who could not afford housing. Now for many (but not all, there are genuine cases of need) it is simply a cheaper form of housing. It also comes up in the left argument about capping housing benefit. Why should those in 'need' have choice that those who pay don't have. I totally support capping benefit at minimum wage, an idea hated by the left as it connects benefit to need and not want. Labour have to be applauded in history for the welfare state, but in the last decade or so it has completely lost the concept of what it was intended to be. But hey, I've got a beret, a Che tee shirt and an endless supply of potnoodle so let's chant stereotypical ******** about anyone who try's to get a grip of an out of control welfare system.
  6. The vast majority may want to work, but are they prepared to start low and work up. I'm now in Adelaide, but when in the UK and Channel Islands working, east European staff were easier to employ. I interviewed plenty of Brits and immigrants, but the former had higher expectations. I was a grad and started out low paid and proved my worth. Did the same when I arrived in Australia as a senior manager. That's unfortunately an immigrant attitude, and when put up against an incumbent, local, applicant who wants to achieve before they've earn't it, to an employer it's a big plus for the new guy.
  7. We did this 18months ago, I came out first to do the house and wife and FOUR kids under 12 came out later. I actually flew to Hong Kong to meet them at the transit point. Only problem was with the time zones, etc., I was snoring away on the flight back to Sydney, whereas my wife and kids were wide awake... And grumpy... Kids adapt, plenty of sweets, snacks, iPads, etc. We've now just moved to Adelaide and drove the family down, not one moan in three days of driving, but then I did tell them that the first one to complain or kick off would be left at the roadside.
  8. Don't know why you wouldn't. If you have PR already it is a major plus point and saves the company thousands in fees, etc. If you don't mention it, they think you are speculating and searching for sponsorship, so you get the 'round' filing drawer.
  9. It will change things and there are some upsides, not just price, but hopefully a lightbulb moment when retailers here suddenly realise that shoppers are not just victims waiting to be gouged. I buy tools, most now come from the UK and US. I accept that imported tools will be dearer purchased here. But over the past couple of years, particularly with the Euro drop, tools I buy from Europe are getting cheaper and cheaper, while the local stockist keeps going up. Plus, more often than not, stuff jut isn't in stock here. You travel 1hr to a store advertising stock to be told 'sorry' back order, 3/4 weeks. Amazon sent me a new Power tool for 40% less in 72hrs..... Lack of local competition has been a problem for a while (just look at DJ v Myers) maybe the Internet will improve it.
  10. Yes, agencies will ignore you You have to be here, but there are jobs for people with good CV's but from UK you will take a salary hit in year one. I posted an ad here not so long ago, and we are still looking generally, but we won't interview until you are here or,you have a visa and are about to fly. If that fits and you work in construction management/ project management, send me a cv.
  11. If you are in NSW and want a drivers licence you have to have a sticker. RTA will not accept e-visa. Given you can barely buy coffee without a drivers licence, you need a sticker.
  12. Depends what you want to do. Bars in the airport are nice, but expect to pay 70 dirham a beer (but watch some who have a 100dhs min charge). As to the rest loads of Starbucks and crowded over priced shopping. If you have 10/11 hrs and feel brave, leave go outside (visa on arrival) and grab taxi to Dubai mall. About 25min away, as good as malls get. Or taxi to deira creek for a walk and coffee. (maybe 20min)
  13. Also, every agency will want to interview you ASAP, they will sound soooooo positive and will tell you things like.. .."we will put together a target list of companies to approach..." ..."Ive got a select couple of companies that like me to send good CV's to whenever they come in".... Mail shots..... You will be ringing the agents after two weeks and never hear from them again. One of the most effective ways here in Oz is direct contact. Research the companies you think are in your field and ring the HR dept up. They are so approachable and although unemployment is low, quality is also poor due a lot to complacently in the 22-30 year olds.
  14. Reason agent say don't go elsewhere is that the less scrupulous ones will simply mail your cv to everyone, every potential employer therefore you are 'introduced'. You need to make it clear that a) you are talking to others and b) you do not give permission to send your cv to anyone without your permission. At the end of the day, recruitment is slow, no agent is going to not try and place you if he has a sniff of a chance.
  15. I had a choice, stay living in Europe but spend all of my time away from the family working in the Middle East and Africa, or move to aus and come home at night after work. Mind you, with a teenage daughter that decision occasionally comes back to haunt me.
  16. We did the opposite, after living in limousin in central France and then moving down to Murcia in Spain, we ended up in Sydney. I like it here, but I do miss both France and Spain badly. I have no doubt we will be retiring back there (probably France near the Spanish border) in a few years.
  17. Have flown both regularly living in Dubai and compared to most airlines in the world they are better than average. I actually prefer Qatar for service, but if you are flying from UK via either Qatar or Dubai it depends if you area stopping over. Dubai airport is a long slog, even in the emirates terminal and at night you will be searching for somewhere to site that is t occupied by someone sleeping. Doha, (until the new airport is ready) is tiny and no where to eat or drink (practically) but it doesn't matter as the connections are very short. I like Doha transits, off plane, quick run, short queue and off again. Dubai, long walk, wait, long run, wait, long wait, off....
