  1. I'd say 45-50k per year is the minimum with most full time office jobs, exceptions for very entry level positions that attract recent graduates or otherwise low paying roles.
  2. I don't know where you are getting your information from but this is simply not true. At least for any capital cities in Australia.
  3. To follow up, I had no real issue getting a (high limit) credit card after 10 month as a PR and 4 month of being on a full time contract.
  4. really, $50? Seriously, 6 month after what? Arrival? Commencement of job? Did they ask for any paperwork or do they just run a credit check?
  5. To be honest that would be the primary reason for me, just made a reservation: 2750$ excess, down to $300 would cost an extra $30 per day. So paying with a Card with relevant insurance package saves you a lot if you travel frequently. The ANZ Platinum costs $89 a year if you spend less than 20k - you do the math
  6. I didn't check the fine print for the cards I looked at but usually the rental car insurance knocks the excess down to a few hundred bucks - at least thats what my cards from other countries do.
  7. Hi there, before I approach my bank I would like to get some experiences from here. I currently have an ANZ Visa debit card as my only Australian Credit Card. I would like to get a real card, not for the credit but my travels are increasing and I would like one with a decent insurance package (rental car, medical etc) instead of using my overseas card for these things. The ANZ platinum card for instance would offer these things but I am not sure I will be able to get one (or any other card for that matter). I've been here for almost 6 month as a PR, decent paying job for the last 2 month, permanent contract (still on probation though) since last week. Before I get laughed out of the bank, any advice? Much appreciated! Anna
  8. I know thats not what you asked but regional areas around Brisbane/Gold Coast? Regional areas in Australia means far far away from the next large city, definitely not commuting by car distance. I don't know anything about nursing and things change fast but nurses seem to have a tough job market in QLD right now, judging from the news. You will always find work in regional areas, but this means outside major metropolitan areas. Good Luck and all the best!
  9. Could be anything, lots and lots of services have special departments for foreign students (banks, real estate offices, doctors...). Or just target people with foreign names, its a numbers game anyhow. I would think foreign students can be easy targets because they often have very little knowledge of how the system here works and low English skills.
  10. Ok thanks. But how much exactly does medicare cover? Is it a fixed contribution or percentage?
  11. Hi there, quick question, when it says Sooo.. how much will I end up paying? Other doctors quote a fixed amount for a consultation, is the medicare contribution fixed and I pay everything above? In case I need x-rays, does medicare cover them full or partly? Always been to our bulk billing doctor but she is unavailable, grateful for any advice Thanks!
  12. Hi, I am having a bit of an internal debate whether or not to mention my visa status in my CV or cover letter. I mention it sometimes, for instance when the ad clearly states that you need to be a citizen or PR. On the other hand I read somewhere that you shouldn't dwell on being from overseas to maximize your chances. I do not explicitly mention the location of my previous employers in my cv but anyone with half a brain can figure it out from the names, especially of the Universities. Sooo.. What do you guys do? Thinking of throwing in a sentence such as "I am a PR and do not require sponsorship" at the end of all my cover letters just to be safe. Thanks!
  13. Just to follow through, the interview went very well from my point of view. We didnt discuss specific jobs but the recruiter went through my cv, gave me feedback and just general advice on how my overseas experience translates over here in terms of possible jobs, salary etc. All that for free plus the usual promise to find me a position - no complains here
  14. Hi folks, I have an interview with a recruiter from a large agency set up for next week. I called them about a position a while ago and they got back to me now to "discuss my options". I have never had an interview with an agency (always directly with the potential employer) and never one in Australia so I am not sure what to expect. In addition, this is not for a specific role but rather general. I assume they meet with every candidate before putting them in their system. Any advice on the whole thing? So far I am preparing to go over my CV as well as looking at potential positions they have advertised that I am interested in. Any help is appreciated! Thank you in advance!
  15. Hey, I am asking this question on behalf of a friend who's sharing a shipping container with us. They are on a 176 with QLD sponsorship but plan on spending the first month or two with family in NSW waiting for their stuff to arrive. They want to get visa labels in their passports but worry that it mentions their state sponsorship and they might run into problems when registering with medicare etc. in the "wriong state". We're on a 175 ourselves so no idea what the 176 label looks like. Does anyone know? Thanks!
