Temp accommodation (~1 month) Eatons Hills / Albany Creek Areas
SaraC replied to M005's topic in Queensland
Hi, Apparently the Chermside motel has good reviews and is about 15 mins from EH/Ac as Loopylu has stated above. Or there's a few other motels around that area. We're about 10 minutes from AC so feel free to pm if you want any more information -

Hi, is it too late for me to join in? I moved to Brisbane 3 months ago and am living on the north side xx -
Hi, We have been Permanent Residents in Australia since 10th April this year and I have been working full time for my employer since 22nd April so I am due to do a Tax Return soon, am I right in thinking that I have to declare my income that I earned in the UK before we entered Australia? The same applies for my Husband, he hasn't been able to find work as yet so he hasn't earned anything here but does he have to lodge a tax return detailing the amounts he earned in the UK before we came here? The reason I ask is that when we put our claim in for Child Care Benefit for my DD's Kindy, they told me that the income that I had earned in the UK should be included on the form (and therefore lowers the amount of CCB which we can receive), even though here our income is low as only I am working and this would then be recalculated once my tax return has been processed. I hope this makes sense! Thank you in advance Sara

Hi Just an update on us, we arrived in Australia on 10th April and are currently settling into Mother in Law's house and saying hi to the family etc. Whilst we were on the way to Australia, I received an email from a lady who had Skype interviewed me for a job 2 weeks previous, I called her and she offered me the position there and then!! Hope you're all doing well

The pram is a Stokke so doesn't fold down small at all, we have bought a cheap buggy to take on the plane and for the 8-10 weeks until the Stokke arrives but I love the Stokke too much to leave behind (and my baby is 16 months so not young enough for me to justify me buying a new Stokke in Australia!)

How to gain local experience in a University?

Hi, just an update. I had my interview via Skype on Wednesday morning our time and they have now contacted asked my referees for references. Hopefully this is good news, fingers crossed! x -
Hi. We're leaving for Australia next Sunday :laugh: and our shipping company are coming out to pack everything up on Friday, we're not taking much with us, just Hubby's guitars, amps, pedal boards, kids toys, my wedding dress and the baby's pram. Has anyone shipped a pram out before? If so what do we need to do? I have read about cleaning bike wheels with Jeyes fluid so I assume it will be the same for pram wheels? Thanks x

How to gain local experience in a University?
SaraC replied to SaraC's topic in Careers and Vacancies
Hi, Just an update really, after all my doom and gloom this week I woke up to an email this morning inviting me for a Skype interview for a RA role which I have applied for within the same type of Research Institute I work for here, I have emailed and explained that I am actually in the country for the interview date but I can't believe I've actually got an interview! Where there's a will there's a way eh?! x -
How to gain local experience in a University?
SaraC replied to SaraC's topic in Careers and Vacancies
Hi Chortlepuss, Thanks for your reply. I have emailed the contact for the job after I have got the "Job application unsuccessful" email and asked if they would be kind enough to provide feedback which they have. It's not an academic position I am applying for but a Research Administration or Finance post (which are all quite specialised and I hit all of the criteria). I am moving to QLD initially and we will eb living with my MIL, the thing is that we haven't sold our house so we don't have 6 months living expenses, hence why I am getting a bit frantic about the lack of opportunity. I have emailed some of my academics here who have contacts in Brisbane and told them about the issues I am facing and asking them if they think that their contacts can give me work experience out there either paid or unpaid to let me know. -
How to gain local experience in a University?

Hi Tickled Pink, The feedback has been for 3 separate jobs within a University. I have emailed the contact before I applied explaining that I have a 176 PR visa and am interested in applying for the position and would there be a problem with me applying from the U.K. They have all said no but then given me feedback that my application was very strong but I don't have local experience. It's so annoying! Thanks for replying  -
Hi, I am a mid-level manager within a University in the U.K. We are due to leave for Australia in just under 3 weeks and I am struggling to get a job! I have 9 years Research administration and Finance management experience and have applied for lower level jobs and on asking for feedback, I have been told that my application has been very strong but I have been ruled out due to lack of local experience. How can I build this experience?! It's catch 22, I know I can do a good job if they give me a chance but they won't as I don't have Aussie experience. I have emailed one of the University's to ask about the opportunity of doing temporary paid or unpaid while (I can only afford to do unpaid for a short while) to build up experience. It's so frustrating, I don't expect to get a Management position out there (nor do I want to) but not even getting an interview for entry level jobs when I hit all of the Essential and Desirable criteria is driving me nuts (none of the positions state that local experience is needed). Anyone got any tips? Thanks Sara

Hi, Could you pm me the company name please? x

Thanks Snifter, I will follow it up with an email on Monday. OH is already saying that we shouldn't take as much as we're allowed due to having to lug it round but as we're only taking 150cu ft up in a container I figure the more we can get in the suitcases the better x
