  3. Hi all, My husband and I moved to Sydney bit more than two months ago from London and it is time to say hello to the World down under! We are still discovering Sydney and our minds have been focused on my husband's job, finding&dressing our place (which we are still doing!) and trying to understand this city, but it is time to start enjoying Sydney and what Oz can offer, so we would like to meet people! plus I'd like some advise re jobs too! - We moved to Sydney because of my husband's job. We live in Neutral Bay and would be great to make new friends. Plus any advise on how to get on in Sydney would be fantastic! Jamie, my husband, works office hrs in the city and I'm free all day really. We like going outdoors walking, going to the beach, staying in, Jamie likes mountain-biking and I love all about art. Really easygoing, so if any of you would like to meet up let us know! Or if there is any other ladies around who wanna meet up just message me I get so bored being at home, which takes me to my other wonder:work. I work in Broadcasting/TV/film and my last job in London was with a worldwide broadcaster, but the kind of job I used to do there is mainly done in Asia and I am not familiar with the Media industry here; so I'm open to work in temp jobs until I find a job in my career. Do any of you know of websites or if any of you work in Media.. Any good agencies to check or good companies to work for? I like working and being around people, plus extra earnings are always welcome... Help!? Feel free to say hi!
  4. On the Human Services website, the following is stated: "You usually have to wait 104 weeks (the Newly Arrived Resident's Waiting Period) before you can access most payments and benefits. This waiting period doesn’t apply to family assistance payments." I assumed that no assistance is given so am a little surprised. What payments are classified as "family assistance"?

    Moving to Australia from India

Hello All This is my first post here, I hope I shall get the answers from this group. Please direct me to the right group in case I am wrong. Appreciating your help on this. As Australia is a new country for me and I have no much idea about. These are what I need to know. 1) As being in IT I am planning to look in Sydney? Is that right choice. I am working with PERL and Shell scripting currently. Is it better to look for some other state in terms of Jobs? 2) How much cash I should carry before coming to Australia (Like an average). I am OK to go in Sharing accommodation initially.? 3) I have to reach Australia before Feb 2014, So what is the best time to arrive there as there will be holidays and financial year plans for companies. So wanted to come in time when generally the Job season starts? 4) In some sites I have seen people telling to take some Job oriented courses and settle down? 5) For the PR , is it easier to get Govt Jobs or I presume there is some restriction for the same. 6) I searched in some websites like seek and all but they seem to reject. Not sure because I am doing from INDIA. They haven;t mentioned any reason as of that. What is your advice on this? 7) I heard government gives some benefits for the PR initially till we get a job. Not very clear about this. 8) Is it better to bring the family along initially so that PR benefits can be claimed. Can it be claimed when I am coming alone? 9) Any cheap options to stay in Sydney in terms of Sharing accomodation,..... Thanks Anish

    Just arrived in Brisbane

Hey, myself and my boyfriend just arrived in Brisbane on Sunday, beautiful city and weather but I'm missing home. I know that's crazy cause Northern Ireland has nothing to offer for young graduates and we are best to conquer the world at 24 and 26 years of age but I miss my family more than I thought I would. I know Skype, Facebook etc is a wonderful thing but its still hard seeing them on it and the time difference is hard too-I skyped my sister at 4am Brisbane time this morning just to see how she was! My sis is 18 and me and her are very close so missing her lots. It's scary though with the thought of having to find a job and a house to share with strangers too. We don't really know anyone here. We are staying in Yha hostel and everyone seems nice but keeps to themselves. Staff are very nice and helpful tho. We move out next Sunday to our room share which we need to find first and I'm so scared too. Would really appreciate some word of wisdom and help with regards to work and room share. I'm not sure either whether to do regional work as at the minute I wouldn't want to stay a second year but I might grow to love it down the line. if anyone is in a similar situation or even just a friendly face to help settle us in would be great. We must be the two whites people in Brisbane - so jealous of everyone's tan but we are Irish and will never tan please help thanks

    Melbourne migrant flying solo

Hey I'm moving to Melbourne from Brighton and arriving in early April. I'm going on my own and pretty much diving in at the deep end as I don't have a job or long term accommodation yet. Oh, I also don't know anyone! I am, however, very excited nonetheless! Wondered if anyone had any top tips for getting settled or fancied arranging a social after I've arrived?! Would love to hear from anyone who's been there a while or anyone arriving soon! Ashleigh
  10. Hi to all, Firstly thank you for looking at my Thread, Myself my husband and two children are currently packing in the UK and are looking forward to the move to Brisbane. I have gained a position in a professional Podiatry Clinic and I am due to Start as soon as my paperwork is finalised and I arrive in Brisbane. My Husband on the other hand is looking for work and has a few areas of expertise. 13 years British Military - Transport & Logistic. Section Commander - Fuel and General transport Manager. World wide operations. Many years experience in the transport industry - Scheduling and operating machinery - HGV licence with tanker and articulated skills. 5 years working as a Head of KS4/Deputy Centre Manager/Teaching and working with challenging dis-engaged Students KS3/KS4. I was hoping for some one to come to my husbands rescue and offer him some work... I know I am hoping times are tough and jobs few and far between. Still no harm in trying. If any one reads this and has any information or guidance in any matters relating to our move or work in Brisbane then please get in touch. I was looking at buying a car on arrival and was shocked at the cost in comparison to the UK, our car in the UK (Audi A4) is double in Australia, this worries me, any one had a positive experience with buying a car or could steer me in the right direction please.. Looking to live either at the Spring Field Lakes or Forest Lake, any comments or advice please... Another concern is the two kids and the Schools, few so much to think about.. any help please.... would love to make some friends prior to our arrival, fun loving family who like to spend time with others as to us friends are very important. Thank you for reading my thread, look forward to meeting up soon Amanda & Darran , Ellie mai and Corey.:cute:
