  1. If you want something central then I recommend the Milton Motel. They have furnished apartments.
  2. I found a wonderful part-time job for the first one I applied to. I work 5 hours a day, 5 days a week during school hours.
  3. I work at a uni in Queensland and I went asked the Student Centre. The Uni doesn't have a choice in whether they would accept the English GCSE from the UK. They said your best bet would be to contact QTAC http://www.qtac.edu.au/ and ask them as they are who would would end up applying through.
  4. One of my co-workers lives in Burleigh Heads and cannot say enough wonderful things about it.
  5. I would think that they would definitely require an A level as the GCSE is only the equivalent to Grade 10. This is how UQ explained it to me. ETA: Definitely worry about the fees too. She wouldn't qualify for HECS-HELP and would have to fund the student contribution. New Zealand citizens and all other Australian permanent residents must pay their SCA up-front without a discount – they cannot obtain a HECS-HELP loan. http://www.uq.edu.au/study/?id=21165
  6. I just wondered why they needed a nanny in the UK when her hubby was unemployed for 3.5 years. But this is also a "Mother" who doesn't know how many kids she has nor their ages.
  7. We were advised to put the visa info on the cover letter and on the CV under the address. My hubby was able to gain employment before leaving the UK.
  8. I don't think ours would. The only option we were given was cash or bank transfer.
  9. Welcome to the forum! We live about 5km from the CBD and love it here. My kids (a 14 year old daughter and 6 year old twin girls) have settled in so well and we find it an amazing place to raise the kids.
  10. My eldest daughter rows for her school in the Brisbane River and at first she was terrified of the Bull Sharks but now doesn't give it a second thought. Someone always seems to be falling out of the boats from the schools... especially when the City Cat drivers like to create a wash to knock them over.
  11. Kelvin Grove isn't too far from Toowong. When they finish the Legacy Tunnel it will be 4 minutes. It isn't a bad area at all. Some friends of ours live in Wilston which isn't too far from Kelvin Grove and my boss lives in The Grange.
  12. A friend of mine from Scotland moved to Christchurch about 2 years ago and they simply love it. They initially went there with the plan of eventually coming to Brisbane but now they love it so much and wouldn't dream of leaving NZ. They spend their holiday time in Australia though.
  13. I live in Toowong and it is so handy for getting around. I didn't know that QUT had anything out near Kenmore Hills. The traffic getting into central Brisbane from that area is horrific and why we haven't gone further out.
  14. I cannot fathom spending that much a week for groceries. We are a family of 5 and our teenager eats insane amounts and my shopping has never been over $300 a week. I buy brand name foods, eat meat every night of the week and I cannot see how you can spend $700 or more per week. Our good friends here have 7 kids and for a family of 9 they only spend $475 a week on average.
  15. \\ Scholarships to Eton are rarer than hens teeth. My hubby was educated at Eton and it is crazy expensive. My eldest's private school in the UK was nearly 30k GBP per year versus $20k here for an even better school Hands down private education here is more affordable and usually better. We have three kids in private school here and would have been very hard to do this back in the UK.

    HECS

It is hard wrapping your head around a system like this one. I am already researching it even though my eldest is only in Grade 9.

At my Uni, the debt is accrued as each semester happens so there is no $40k at the very beginning. But yes if you change courses then you are responsible for the original course fees (of the classes you have already taken) plus the new ones you will take.

There is a 10% discount at the Uni I work at if you pay your terms fees upfront. The discount was 20% but was cut to 10% in last years budget.
  19. That's what we did. We actually chose schools for the kids that were close to CBD and then chose suburb from there.
  20. Definitely school. You can always move towards the "prettier" house once the kids are off at Uni.
  21. I still order mine from Bravissimo in the UK. I need larger than average sizes and struggle to find anything here that is 30/32 HH.
  22. We got declined for almost everything when we arrived and hubby had a job! After a few months we were able to get Foxtel. We used Optus for our home phone and Internet (and mobiles too).
  23. No, you can't ship spices. All of the 6 companies who quoted for us told us that we definitely couldn't bring them.
  24. Welcome! We have been in Brisbane for just over a year and we love it here.
  25. My husband is a contractor and we got my car on finance after we had 3 months wage slips and a few months left on the contract.
