  1. I hope you have already organised somewhere to stay.
  2. Hi and welcome There are a few of us on here who provide short term rental accommodation - we do (see the link in my signature to our site) and also Tracey from http://www.ozhouserental.com. It's usual for lets to be organised well in advance of arrival, particularly given the shortage of all accommodation in WA at the moment. Best thing you can do is start to look around and get an idea of location, pricing etc then email the providers with any questions. You might also want to check out our sister site, http://www.perthpoms.com, which has a lot of specific info on Perth and WA. Jen
  3. Short term rentals are synonymous with holiday rentals/lets. They're usually more expensive because they include furniture as well as utilities. Will you be driving to work or will you be relying on public transport? I ask because I'm not sure what the transport links to and from Sorrento are like, and this might impact on where you decide to stay. - Jen
  4. Hi wheatley, and welcome to the forum. You might want to try Tracey from http://www.ozhouserental.com as she has a number of properties that are south of the river. Jen
  5. What state are you looking at moving to? Part of the issue with firefighters is that the recognition of prior learning process is absymal. (This is what occurs when your husband would try to get his quals as a FF 'translated' into the Australian equivalent qualification. Without this RPL process he won't work as a FF.) There are different systems between the different states as well, which just complicates things, eg. if you started off in WA then moved to NSW, your husband would need to go through the RPL process again for NSW. In terms of whether he'd get a 'good job', after completing the RPL process he would probably work a similar shift pattern to what he does now - four days off, followed by two day shifts, two night shifts, with the day shifts at 10hrs and the night shifts at 14hrs. In terms of money, ask any FF and they will say they aren't paid enough, so it's hard to say. Good luck!!

    New Mod

    Good work Rupert!
  7. Wow, the setting must have been on 'fry' :frown:
  8. My husband has AS and is on six-weekly infusions of infliximab. I don't know how expensive Humira is, but I know that if we had to pay the full cost of his drugs, it would cost us about $30,000 per year. :frown: It's a heavily restricted drug and the only reason he is able to access it through the public health system is because he's a particularly bad case, poor love. He's tried etanercept as well but it was nowhere near as effective. I hope you find a solution. Let us know how you go.
  9. Very rarely can an employer force their employees to do anything. However, our largest and closest trading partners are Asian countries. What industry are you in? If it's relatively small, you will find word gets around pretty quickly about unwillingness to do something that your average person would consider par for the course. I don't mean to be harsh but I think you would find it detrimental to your career. Let us know the outcome of whatever you decide to do.
  10. I'm sorry for your loss  It's a horrible thing to be overseas when a friend or family member is terminally ill or dying - when my dad died, my brother was in Japan. He had to fly back home by himself. Not something I'd wish on anyone.
  11. I'm not an expert by any means, but my understanding is that different people have different levels of 'susceptibility' to hypnosis generally. Have you tried hypnosis before? It might be worthwhile finding out beforehand.... just my 2 cents.
  12. Hang in there ya Mongrel  Hope you feel better soon. Do whatever you need to to get back on top of things, whether that's exercise, catching up with friends, going for walks, or even meds if need be.... life is too short not to enjoy it.
  13. Generally we are finding that our tenants are managing to secure long term rentals in around 2 months. Sometimes it takes a bit longer, sometimes (not often) a bit less.
  14. Australia is pretty big - if you tell us where you're planning on staying, you should get some useful responses.

    Snaaaaake !!!

Yep, dugites are very poisonous. I grew up in the hills area (border of Kelmscott/Roleystone, along the Brookton Highway) and had probably had a half-dozen snake sightings by the age of nine.... most memorable was the time one went over my bare foot. Fortunately I was petrified and so froze in shock, while he didn't seem particularly worried - just slunk off into the long grass, while I ran screaming up to the house for my mum!! When I was 12 I also saw a huge (about eight foot) pale browny-cream snake, with an enormous diameter, sunning himself on a rock wall out the back of the house - went to find my dad to show him, but in the two minutes it took, he'd gone. I think I disturbed his afternoon nap! Fortunately our dog never got bitten, but it's horrible when that happens - generally there's not a lot you can do, venomous snakes like dugites can kill dogs or cats extremely quickly due to their smaller size.

    Snaaaaake !!!

Looks like a dugite from the photo but it is hard to tell. The heat brings all the creepy crawlies out! Just be very careful where you step

    Have you ever?

Yes, diagnosed with major depressive disorder when 30, but in retrospect I'd probably been suffering from it for about nine months prior. I had a bad run trying to find meds that worked - one which didn't work did however 'gift' me with an additional 12 kilos, which I lost as soon as I changed meds - it took about five different types before I hit the magic ones that actually work. Took an awfully long time to go through this process but I'm glad I stuck it out - I'm now the person I used to be! My husband has been absolutely wonderful, I can't say enough about his support. Exercise is paramount, I find it's a brilliant way of destressing - nearly as good as wine but better for your liver!! I try to exercise 3 times a week (zumba classes) and would do a 4th if my local zumba lady ran another class on a Thursday or Friday evening. Other than that, it's critical I get enough sleep - minimum 9 hours per night. I've always needed a lot of sleep but if I don't get about 9 hours it directly impacts my mood level as well as my ability to generally cope. Therapy has also been useful but unfortunately for me it wasn't enough - I needed medication to be able to actually get things back under control.
  18. We tend to buy stuff like meat and salad/vegies on a day to day basis. That way if neither of us can be bothered cooking, at least we don't feel guilty about not using food that might need to be cooked that day. All fruit/vegie scraps or that are too old get buried in the garden, as does stuff like tea bags, etc.
  19. Our website is http://www.perthfurnishedrentals.com, and our properties are in Balcatta, Glendalough and Osborne Park. Feel free to PM or email me with any questions and I'll be happy to help
  20. When would you be wanting to rent from? Is it an issue of already being booked up? For example our next availability for any of our properties isn't until 24 Feb, so if you wanted something before then we wouldn't be able to help you. I do find it surprising that nobody you've contacted would be prepared to lease to you for six months, at least in terms of fully furnished accommodation - properties in this niche are used to renting for much shorter terms. Edit: I must add that blossom79 is spot on if you're talking about the standard unfurnished rental market however, if you're looking for an unfurnished (standard) rental property then you would be finding it difficult to find anywhere - landlords do prefer longer tenure.

    Wrinkles

I wear Dove Essential Nutrients Protective Moisturising Lotion on face and neck every day, summer or winter. Also put it on the back of my hands.... dried out hands are a sure indicator of age. No wrinkles yet but I'm only 36, so get back to me in 10 years!
  22. Chelle, please also keep in mind that you can always call Lifeline. I don't know the number but if you google it you'll find it. They will be able to offer you some emotional support as well as possibly be able to suggest some practical ways to change your situation. Please hang in there, and keep us updated as to how you're going, okay? Thinking of you, Jen
  23. We used fixed term leases for our properties, which are based on those at the WA Dept of Commerce. Here's the link to the relevant section of their site:- http://www.commerce.wa.gov.au/ConsumerProtection/Content/Property_renting/index.htm There's a heap of info on there, so do take a bit of time to browse it - pretty much any question you have should be answered. We also take a bond and lodge it with the Bond Administrator. Even though we do short term leases, we consider it's best practice and it also protects both the tenants and the landlords. Jen
  24. The other thing you could also consider is couchsurfing, however do be careful as you never know what loonies are out there! If I were ten years younger this would be the way I'd go, so much cheaper, and it's then money you can spend on other things.
  25. We have let our properties for up to two years, and I have no doubt that other short term accom providers would be prepared to do so as well. Best thing you could do is get in touch with a few and ask.
