  1. Register for Medicare Dont look at the price of food Switch your driving license
  2. The tax I quoted was using An ATO calculator and I didn't think lafha applied anymore!!
  3. These properties are about 350 a week and not great and outer brisbane http://www.realestate.com.au/property-house-qld-stafford+heights-411268963 http://www.realestate.com.au/property-house-qld-acacia+ridge-411268367 400 a week in chermside, still need to pay for travel into city http://www.realestate.com.au/property-house-qld-chermside-411263939 Have a good look on Realestate.com.au before you do anything.
  4. 54k income, tax approx 17.5k, rent at 400 (20800 a year) a week which you will be lucky to find in Brisbane equates to, 15700 left for the year which gives you 301 dollars a week for food, bills, travel to work, look after family. If you are not bringing any money over or you wife wont be work, I would say impossible on one salary. Australia is very expensive and to be fair to feed your family may cost what you have left....sorry
  5. Hi all Im on the Gold Coast and wondered if anyone knew of a fast tracking process for obtaining/renewing my UK passport. I know AUSPOST do a tick and flick exercise but the process still takes 6 weeks from there, back in the UK you can drive to Liverpool, wait in a line and get one there and then, wondered if there was anything similar over here? Cheers Sean
  6. A friend of mine used to travel down from Caloundra (South Sunny) it used to take him 2-3 hrs to drive sometimes each way, adding 4 hrs onto your day is no fun. There is a train but think it only starts at Nambour/Caboolture so it all depends on how far you are North.
  7. Commuting from the sunny coast to brissy is a shitty commute, I come up from the goldy everyday and its an hour on the train. It depends how north you go but the bruce highway is just a glorified dual carriageway and you take your life in your own hands when you are on it. Work wise for me I work for one of the Top 4 in Mining which once you are in the sector, you are normally sorted, but its a bit like a man utd season ticket, virtually impossible unless you have a niche skill or know someone. Echo the same as everyone else though, plenty of jobs for me in melbourne or sydney, luckily this has been a 2 year contract but brisbane is a very clicky place and a small network. Everyone knows everyone and since the government shake up, the rates have come down as there are plenty of over qualified people ready to work for less as there is little out there. When this gig finishes, if there is nothing here I will look to sydney/melbourne, but who knows, the market may change or my network may help out. I have been a linked in slut and have over 2500 connections who are mainly recruitment consultants, when I need work I will just contact them or post something and hopefully someone will bite. Rates for my position have probably gone from 600-1000 per day to 500-650 per day so there is a big drop, still good if you can get a decent sized gig though. Good luck and as someone else said, xmas is a shitty time of year to look for a job as this is there summer hols, market picks up in Feb for a while, drops until year end, and then back up again.
  8. Hola Unblocker is good but they are struggling with keeping up with the BBC Iplayer as they keep wriggling out of it. As for netflix, use Hola, unblock netflix and use an american postcode, I used 9o2io (only one I knew and I get US netflix for 7.99 a month)
  9. Hi Paisley, cant believe they have had to drop the iplayer for now. It still has some good channels on it and US netflix is awesome and the ITV player is back on to use. If you check out there FB site, you can get updates on whats available.
  10. I work within the Energy sector in brisbane and we just released a PM role, filled now, had over 200 applicants for a permie role. Government sector has flooded the market and there are Program Managers and above going for these roles as the market is that bad.
  11. Say it is 1000 per week, rent - 500, phones - 70, Elec - 100, Fuel - 100, Internet - 50, Food - 300 = 1120. Not a great deal left. :-( No going out and I have been conservative. Sydney is expensive. People do it tho.
  12. Like Tickled, we came on a 457 and were sponsored for PR after 4 months. Works for some and not for others. You didnt really offer any advice though, thats like me saying, DONT GET PREGNANT! :Randy-git:
  13. I always had to work out of town to get decent cash, worked at HMRC in Telford before I left on a contract but that was only 350GBP a day. When I was PMing in the telecoms space, was earning 42k. When are you emmigrating?
  14. Hi I have been here 3.5 years and only been out of a job since I arrived and wanted to play golf for 3 months. I work in the PM space and my rate is a 1k a day and this will end up being a 2 year contract. WolvesAussie, Im from Cannock lol, you are lucky to get an interview from over there so good luck, with the market as satched as it is, employers can pick and choose from over qualified candidates at the moment. Government markets are shot, Oil and Gas is thriving but getting in there is tough. PM rates are varying from 550 - 800 per day, I know a few bods earning that but the contracts are now shorter. To the OP, give yourself a lot of contingency to find anything and remember, what makes your resume stand out from the other 200 they might receive for the same job. Are you on a 457? They are starting to look down on those too which sucks. April and May are normally more buoyant as Budgets are being settled but it will be hit and miss. I can send you a few of my agency contacts who can probably take a look for you if you PM me. Cheers KOTG
  15. Also works with ITV Player, Netflix (US Version is insane), CBS, Fox and C4OD is you are on W7 and not 8 :-) Again, thank me later.
  16. Use Hola unblocker with Google Chrome and watch it on Iplayer. Search for my post and the instructions are on there, thank me later :-)
  17. We paid 720 for ours over here, and they can get to I we a grand so defo buy one and bring one, I would buy two and maybe sell one if u can get a good deal, need to change the plug tho, reg sparky needs to do it for insurance purposes tho in case u burn the house down.
  18. I am one of "THOSE" posters and everyones situation is different; different skills, experience, required roles, life needs, hence the fact that some of THOSE posters, offered their own perspectives although they may not have been as negative as the OPs thread title. The Brisbane job market in the IT space has never been as buoyant as Sydney or Melbourne, the government shake up, displaced thousands of employees and saturated the market, rates came down and the needs for a niche or angle has never been so important. There will have been hundreds of PMs displaced and who is to say which PM is better than the other unless you have a niche. We advertised for a permie PM the other day and had over 200 applicants. Brisbane jobs are mostly about networking, do a **** job and everyone will hear about it, lots of jobs have already been taken by the time they adverts go on seek, hence the 1200 people on my linkedin account. Its not easy for everyone, agreed, but as Andy has said, some people have come over here and find it relatively easy to find work. I am an IT contractor and have not been out of work in 4 years through 4 different contracts with no gaps. Good luck to everyone!
  19. Hi I am eligible to apply for my citizenship on the 6th July this year, when I book online does anyone know how long it takes to come through and do I have to wait until a specific time for the ceremony (i.e. Australia day). Also, how much does it cost. Cheers Sean
  20. Do you not know where to search the skills list?
  21. Hi Alison Welcome, I live in Coomera Waters and commute to Brissy every day. Check out Gumtree Jobs section, they are local and might help, link below. Cheers Sean http://www.gumtree.com.au/s-jobs/gold-coast/c9302l3006035?ad=offering
  22. Hi Hubbert I have been here nearly 4 years now and to be honest when I arrived on a 457, the temp visa thing didnt appear to be much of an issue. I was qualified to work here and so be it. Due to the change in climate now, as you are spousal, I was too, 457s are being revoked left right and centre which makes your tenure, difficult as you could be whipped away from any role if your OH loses their job :-( Also, with the 457 clampdown, I fear the whol 457 visa arena is going to be even more of a minefield than it already is. I dont know what kind of work you do or what kind of salary you expect, maybe, retail work might help for now as I am sure they wouldnt be as stringent. Sorry I cant help more but good luck. I live in Coomera Waters by the way and the fact you live in Hope Island, should matter two hoots about where you will be allowed to work, I fear the 457 is the deciding factor :-(
  23. Why have you double posted, I didn't agree with the first one!
  24. Sounds a bit like Chicken Licken to me. There isn't any work in Brisbane, I beg to differ, there may not be any work that you are the best candidate for, but then that is a different matter.
