  1. Things had been building for some time and the Conservatives were well behind Labour in the polls. Geoffrey Howe, Thatcher’s Deputy Prime Minister, resigned because she refused to set a timetable for Britain to join the European Exchange Rate Mechanism and the single currency (Euro). Michael Heseltine then challenged her for leadership Thatcher decided not to continue with the leadership ballot and resigned. John Major then replaced her and thankfully Britain never did switch currency to the Euro
  2. According to the paper, the one who organised the Glasgow street party is a 24 year old law graduate....he really suffered under Thatcher didn't he... He was also photographed attacking a paramedic at the student demonstrations in 2010....when he would have been 21 and already graduated, so it had no impact on him
  3. Tell that to the owners of a charity shop who had their windows put in. A charity shop FFS....scum!
  4. Australia's Foreign Minister Bob Carr has described comments made by Baroness Thatcher as "unabashedly racist". In a conversation with her "in her retirement", Mr Carr said the former UK prime minister had warned Australia against Asian immigration. She said "if we allowed too much of it we'd see the natives of the land, the European settlers, overtaken by migrants", he said. Lady Thatcher, 87, died on Monday after suffering a series of strokes. Mr Carr made his comments on the Australian broadcaster ABC's Lateline programme. He said he had been "astonished" at the comments by Lady Thatcher, which were made while his Malaysian-born wife Helena was "standing not far away" but was "fortunately out of earshot". But he said he retained respect for the "boldness of her political leadership". Mr Carr prefaced his comments by saying Lady Thatcher had been "the most significant" leader since Winston Churchill, forcing social democratic parties to "think more deeply about the function of the state". She had been "right in joining [former US President Ronald] Reagan and denouncing the old Soviet Union as an evil dictatorship", he said. "On 100 other things I would pick arguments with her and I recall one conversation I had with her in her retirement where she said something that was unabashedly racist, where she warned Australia - talking to me with Helena standing not far away - against Asian immigration, saying that if we allowed too much of it we'd see the natives of the land, the European settlers, overtaken by migrants. "I couldn't believe it. It reminded me that despite, yes, her greatness on those big questions, the role of the state, the evil nature of the Communist totalitarianism, there was an old-fashioned quality to her that was entirely out of touch and probably explained why her party removed her in the early 90s." He went on to recall: "I remember one thing she said as part of that conversation, she said: 'You will end up like Fiji.' She said: 'I like Sydney but you can't allow the migrants' - and in context she meant Asian migration - 'to take over, otherwise you will end up like Fiji where the Indian migrants have taken over.' "I was so astonished I don't think I could think of an appropriate reply." Lady Thatcher will be buried with full military honours at London's St Paul's Cathedral on Wednesday 17 April. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-asia-22087702
  5. Not the case, if you buy it in Singapore, the staff bring it down to the gate for you to collect. Think in Heathrow you can carry it yourself, can't remember, you just can't go through security with it, but you can buy it after security btw, it's £11.50 a bottle in Waitrose at the moment.
  6. Does 'free speech' extend to smashing up shops, starting fires, painting graffiti on walls and fighting with the Police?
  7. Wait til next week.... The coverage of the rioting will probably get as much coverage of the funeral
  8. These pits have closed eventually anyway Coal supply wasn't unlimited, and they were unprofitable and being subsidised, so instead of long slow death of these places, with the union calling the shots, it was done quickly...too quickly? probably, but it was going to happen
  9. Sydney doesn't have an 'underground' The main line train comes into Central, then goes underground in the city to Town Hall, Wynyard, comes above ground at Circular Quay, then back under to St James and Museum Here is a map http://www.railmaps.com.au/sydney.png
  10. You're not allowed an opinion, according to some on here, unless you lived through it, so history teachers may as well pack in work, they're wasting their time
  11. Education, Education, Education......that mantra was lost on you wasn't it... FYI, I know you're no good at averages, but the average turnout in the UK is 73.9% so it was an above average turnout
  12. Or in reality, the 9th highest turnout since the war (out of 18 General Elections) 75.30% Winning almost 60% of the of seats, 147 seats more than Labour Winning over 40% of the votes, 30% to Labour
  13. I’ve said before, and I’ll say it again, selling council houses off was a mistake, and still is a mistake and Cameron is advocating it Its a stupid move that leaves councils paying exorbitant fees to private landlords when they had the houses in their control in the first place.
  14. I'll talk about whatever I like and I don't need your permission I’ve heard enough about what went on and I’ve read about it enough to form my own opinion, does it match with you? Probably not, do I care? Not one jot.
  15. Yes.....my family have no experience of it.
  16. No, but I've heard about it from my family. My Dad was out on strike loads of times during the late 70's
  17. Myth??? So the Winter of Discontent was a myth was it?
  18. Yes, because under spineless Labour, the country was booming wasn't it? What? There's no biscuits for our morning brew?......STRIKE! Unions ran the country in the 70's, actually I should say, Unions held the country to ransom in the 70's Funny how everyone is saying privatisation has meant power and rail transport costs more....wonder how much it would have cost when the workers were out on strike until they got the pay rises they wanted.....or as long as the Government was propping them up and where would that money come from, higher taxes. So back to 80%+ income taxes This place would be no better than Eastern Europe without Thatcher breaking their stranglehold.
  19. Read back will you, I had this discussion with Pablo yesterday....
  20. No. I never said there shouldn't be strikes, I said 2/3 membership return should be the minimum for it to be valid....read back, that's been my position all along If this general strike gets the go ahead, with around 20% of Union members voting for it, the Government should go to the High Court and get an injunction against it If there is a valid reason for a strike that's one thing, but in the last 2 years, they are striking every 5 minutes.
  21. Hope your family don't have to rely on these vital services if you're happy for so few people to vote for a strike and it to be valid.
