  1. I think most people do
  2. First thing to do is check what visa you may be eligible for. Check the visa wizard on the immi.gov.au web site
  3. I will through something into the mix a bit different. I am a geologist and manage / recruited graduate geologists. Have to say that I am far from impressed with the standard of the geology teaching here. I think it is someone to do with the way they do majors and minors rather than concentrating on just geology. Even my boss, an Ozzie would when ever possible recruit a Brit over and Ozzie grad. Likewise other previous bosses. So, if that is a driving factor in where you are considering moving too, it puts a big tick back in the UK box
  4. Hospitality staff in WA generally get a better rate than miners per hour. Most I have come across is about $37 an hour. It's never going to be terrible because of the legislation governs it (too much in my opinion). I tip if the service has been exemplary / gone the extra mile. But otherwise no as surely that is what the tip was originally for.
  5. So the removal of regulatory powers from the BoE by labour, which was flagged at the time by many as having serious potential consequences is not the labour governments fault. The warnings of King in 2007 that the financial industry was behaving in a worrying manner which was ignored by the government is it's fault The huge amount of borrowing undertaken by labour that culminated in the infamous letter to the incoming Tory government saying "sorry, the monies all gone". Isnt their fault The thrusting of the UK into two very expensive wars wasn't their fault. The removal of credit regulations on individual creit brokering wasn't their fault The approval by treasury of the debt buying of high risk lending which brought down Lehman bros wasn't their fault.
  6. Room in a shared house $135 a week Utilities. Same as Perth as same company Transport. About the same as Perth for fuel. I spend about $40 a week gumming about the area. If you are traveling to Perth by public transport then about $13 a day assuming a bus ride to the train station and train. Recreation. Depends a lot on what you like to do. Fishing is popular so bait is about $10 a week, long walks around the estuary are free, pubs slightly cheaper than Perth. Cinema about $12 for a movie, beach free. Peel sports and recreation chafes about $250 a year plus say $20 a week for bit and pieces Insurance. I assume you mean medical. Varies on cover. Check out Bupa, MBF web sites
  7. I am very much a cold lover. I am in Perth and it's not so bad. The real stinking hot days are only a dozen or so a year. I will be taking the dog out in half an hour and need a coat on. Summer heat is a dry heat which is a lot easier to handle than humidity which is what Melbourne and Brisbane get.
  8. I wonder how many of those that have lost their jobs are re training or up skilling while out of work. That is the sensible thing to do.
  9. The report is one of the poorest I have have read. It takes a whole range of items and looks at the price increases. It then says that because things such as computers, white goods and tv's have in real terms become cheaper, then the cost of living has become cheaper. But it ignores the fact that we don't buy these things every day.
  10. Oh, and the choice is yours. I chose a degree course that I knew would result in a good salary. You CHOSE not too
  11. Agreed. So If I pay 20% for the next year, I will hand over probably more than you earn. So why should I? If you only pay say $10k a year tax and are already taking more benefits than me, and the likelihood of me ever requiring to take more benefits is small, then surely I should pay a tax of no more than $10k. And that is being generous
  12. I agree tax revenue should meet requirements. So, how about this. I earn a very good income for which I work very hard in often difficult situations. But, I have top of the range private health care, so I am no drain on public system, I have no children so don't require schools and things, I have income insurance, so will never need unemployment benefits, because I have no children I am also not a drain on the benefits or receive the tax breaks that parents get. I live in a secure gated environment so am burglary proof and require less from the police. I am making sufficient investment for my retirement so won't require state pension. Yet, after all the savings I make, I pay more in tax than the average tax payer. Surely, if taxes need to be increased, it should be those earning less than £30k a year as these are the biggest users of the tax money. If I have a tax rate of 20% then I would still be paying a lot more. Therefore, tax should start at say 50% for lower earners and work downwards as you earn more.
  13. I don't know how in demand your area is. But securing jobs before arrival is notoriously difficult
  14. Why can't people understand that they sat by and happily watched labour spend like money was going out of fashion. Now, they have to pay the cost. It isn't difficult. You can only spend what is coming in. Endless borrowing just turns you into Greece. That is the way of labour and always has been. Blair was no different to his predessors. Brits bring this on themselves.
  15. So, the fact that I, having been homeless and living on the streets of Middlesbrough put myself through education and then spent a lot of time working in very hostile environments including getting shot at should have to hand over most of my income to the government. Sorry bit no. This typifies the give me/ I deserve attitude that will sink the uk.
  16. If the results turn out as expected then it is the perfect example of why the uneducated should not be given the vote.
  17. Raining in Mandurah and forecast for next 7 days is rain and more rain. Interspersed with the odd thunder storm. Going to get the dog up though and take him out. He will hate it.
  18. Have a look at the sister site of this called perthpoms

    Advice

If you come on a WHV you should come in the belief that it is purely that. A holiday. You may get sponsorship, but a lot of people come hoping to get it and don't. Do not bank on it.

    Where to start!

Go to the immi.gov.au web site and do the visa wizard. This will tell which, if any, visas you qualify for
  21. In theory it's possible, but in practice not. Demand for rentals is huge and the system normally involve a short fixed viewing time of about half an hour. There is usually loads of people turn up and it can turn into a bit of a bidding war with people offering to pay x months up front and things. They hand application forms there and then and you need to have references and things with you and potentially even pay the deposit or bond before you know if you have got it. If you don't then they pay it back. Also, be aware that a lot of then properties can be very different in real life to what you see on line!
  22. Sorry no they are very strict on it. There are a couple of other exceptions such as staff in the resources sector but not for IT. I had to do this research myself recently as I have been working in Africa on a FIFO basis. Fortunately I fall into one of the exceptions.
  23. We lived in central Leicester in a two up two down terrace and I was at Uni doing my masters and the wife was working crazy hours at Next directory to support us. Here, we have been in the same rental for the last 3.5 years and it is a very large 3 story house next to the beach with a pool. So that has been a massive improvement. We are in the process of looking to build our own house a couple of streets away. Which will be a single story house which will be a first for us. We always had cats in the uk, but here the wife wanted something to keep her company while I am away so we now have a very spoilt chihuahua. That brings me to the next big change, here my wife doesn't work. So she spends her time doing crafts and some courses. I have gone from working long stretches away from home to working week on week off and better money. A lot better than been a student! We spend a lot of time on the beach. Can't remember the last time I went to the beach in England We don't have easy access to shops, pubs and restaurants here which I do miss. Would kill for a few beers in my old local followed by a Indian. The sun makes a fair bit of difference Never followed much sport in the uk, but here we follow Oz rules team. Go Peel Thunder. A million other changes
  24. Just one application with one as main applicant and one as de facto
  25. The main job site is seek.co.au He might be able to get into mining so should have a look at infomine.com You just apply for jobs and take it from there
