Windsor
Windsor has so much on offer for Melburnians. With an abundance of restaurants, cafés and retail spots at your doorstep, and a walkable distance to the much-loved St Kilda area, there is so much to love about this cool suburb. Located just over 7-kilometres away from the CBD, it’s no wonder this area has become such a popular spot amongst young professionals.
Chapel Street is the well-known part of Windsor. It has an incredible amount to offer, from vintage goods to famous international brands. The area has also established itself as a foodie go-to. Whether you’re after beautiful seafood from Tommy Ruff or a delicious banh mi from Hanoi Hannah’s, you know you’re in safe and capable hands. Chapel Street is also home to the suburb’s local shopping centre, Prahn Central Shopping Centre.
You haven’t really been to Windsor unless you’ve visited Hawker Hall. Based on the vibrant hawker markets ofSingapore and Malaysia, this is a must for all food lovers. The aroma of sizzling stir fries, spicy noodles and yummy curries will entice you in and keep you going back for more. Hawker Hall is located at 98 Chapel Street and is open 11am until late.
If you’re looking for the hip place for Friday night drinks, there are plenty of places to choose from. Jungle Boy is a really in spot to visit, with its entrance hidden within Boston Sub – located on Chapel Street. If you open up the cool-room door behind the sandwich counter, you’ll find yourself in a tiki inspired cocktail bar. Other joints nearby include Thundercat Supper Club, an intimate bar that wouldn’t look out of place in Tokyo’s Golden Gai district. After 10pm on Thursday through to Saturday this space turns into a late-night hang-out, offering guests a variety of drinks and snacks.
Running parallel to Chapel Street is Artists Lane, or Aerosol Alley as it has been nicknamed, a long laneway covered in street art that is much loved by locals and visitors alike. Street art is adored and respected in Melbourne, with plenty of people seeking out the trendiest laneways to get the perfect Instagram shot. However, you’ll know your ‘gram will be sure to impress if you get a snap here.
A popular day trip from Windsor is to St Kilda, which is just a short stroll away. A day at the beach is good for the soul, especially when there are markets to explore, heritagebuildings to admire and Luna Park to bring out your inner child. It’s also incredibly easy to get into the city from St Kilda, simply take a short ride on the route 96 tram and you’ll be immersed in inner-city culture.
According to statistics from Domain.com.au, the average age for the area is 20 – 39 years old, with singles making up the majority of residents. This would make Windsor the perfect suburb for young British newlyweds thinking of making the move to sunny Australia. Purchasing a house in the area is in the higher price bracket with 3-bedroom properties reaching into the millions, however, according to RealEstate.com.au the median rental price for the same sized property is $680 per week. The Windsor catchment contains two schools; the all-girls Presentation College, and Stonnington Primary, a co-ed state school.
Windsor is an incredibly popular suburb for new independents and young professionals, which explains the beautiful yet eclectic café, bar and arts scene on offer. The area offers the perfect balance of being out of the hustle and bustle of the city, yet still being close enough to get a taste of the culture and atmosphere of Melbourne at its finest.
