The Shire of Nillumbik is located in Melbourne Victoria and covers approximately 435 square kilometres .It is about 25km from Melbourne’s CBD. It consists of outer northern suburbs and rural areas past the urban area.
The council comprises of the following wards; Blue lake, Bunjil, Edendale, Ellis, Sugarloaf, Swipers Gully and Wingrove. The Shire of Nillumbik consists of 7 councillors.
Major townships in this area are Eltham, Diamond Creek, Greensborough, Panton Hill, St. Andrews, Yarrambat and Hurstbridge.
History
The Shire of Nillumbik was established in 1994 by the union of different parts of shires which are Diamond Valley, Whittlesea, Healesville and Eltham. The original occupants of this are were the Wurundjeri Aboriginal people. The name of the shire was given in the 1830’s and nyilum bik means “Shallow Earth” in Aboriginal language.
Demographics
According to the 2016 Census, the population of The Shire of Nillumbik was at 61,273. 50.6% make up of female population and 49.4% of males. 0.4% of the population comprised of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. The median age as at the census was 41. Common descents in this city included the following figures- 28.0% English, 25.6% Australian, 10.1% Irish, 8.0% Scottish, 5.9% Italian people. Major religions in this city reported No religion, Catholic and Uniting Church- where Christianity was the largest group among these. The top languages spoken were English, Italian, Greek, Mandarin, German and Macedonian.
The people employed in this area were involved in professions such as Managers, Clerics, Admin workers, Technicians, Tradies and Community workers.

Libraries
The libraries in this city are functioned by the Yarra Plenty Regional Library Service and comprises of eight branches and one mobile library. The libraries are Eltham Library,Watsonia, Thomastown, Rosanna, Mill Park, Lalor, Ivanhoe and Diamond Valley Library. There are also 2 toy libraries in which are Eltham Toy Library and Diamond Valley Toy Library.
Play Groups
The council runs a play group called Nillumbik Little Owls Playgroup. There are also a number of community run playgroups on this area.
Transport
Nillumbik Shire is functioned by Metropolitan Ring Road and Hurstbridge railway line. There are stations at Diamond Creek, Eltham, Hurstbridge and Wattle Glen.

There are lots of trail user groups/clubs like:
Horse riding- Local horse riders have access to recreational trails
Cycling – Nillumbug -You can join a group of riders who ride on Wednesdays and Thursdays in the morning. There is Smiths Gully Mountain Bike Association which is a local mountain bike riders group.
Orienteering- Nillumbik Emus Orienteering Club where they enjoy adventures, friendship and bush areas.
Running- There are also running clubs like the Diamond Creek Parkrun and Diamond Creek Runners.
Walking- There are different walking groups like Eltham and Environs Walking Group, Diamond Valley Bushwalking Club, Nillumbik Community Health and Living & Learning Nillumbik.
