The City of Melton is located 35km West of Melbourne CBD. The city covers approximately 53 square kilometres of area. There council comprises of 3 wards which are Cambridge, Watts and Coburn. The city of Melton consists of with a total of 9 council members.
History
The City of Melton was founded in the 1830’s by squatters who soon developed sheep runs in the area. It’s tourism trade boomed during the Victorian Gold Rush era when settlers and diggers alike passed through the town on their way to the Ballarat. The city was solidified by the opening on their first Post Office in March 1856.
Demographics
Census data collected in 2016 showed that Melton has a population of approximately 142,000 people. Of this demographic 49% were males, with females maintaining the majority with 51%. Only 1% of residents identified themselves as either of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander. Common ancestry according to the 2016 included the following figures: Australian 24%, English 23.4%, Irish 6.4%, Scottish 5.5% and Maltese 4.2%. Christianity is the most practised religion with 28.4% Catholic, 10% Anglican and 28.7% identified themselves as not religious. English is the predominant language with 72.8% only speaking English at home. Of the 23% that are bilingual the most common languages are Dinka, Maltese, Punjabi, Samoan and Spanish.
The people employed in the City of Melton were involved in Technicians and Trades Workers 15.9%, Clerical and Administrative Workers 15.1%, Machinery Operators and Drivers 13.2%, Community and Personal Service Workers 12.7%, and Labourers 11.5%.
Suburbs
On August 23 2017 the Victorian state government amalgamated the district of Melton, which resulted in new suburbs being created. The Council of Morton suburbs now consist of: Aintree, Bonnie Brook, Cobblebank, Deanside, Fieldstone, Fraser Rise, Grangefields, Harkness, Melton South, Melton West, Mount Cottrell, Plumpton, Rockbank, Strathtulloh, Thornhill Park, Toolern Vale, Truganina and Weir Views.
Libraries
There are 3 libraries in Melton, both run by the Melton City Council. Melton Library and Learning Hub is a state of the art facility that offers all manner of family friendly and educational needs. There are two Civic Centre Libraries, one located in central Melton, the other in Caroline Springs.
Transport
Residents of Melton rely heavily on the use of cars as their major form of transport. Buses are the most common form of Public transport available. There are also frequent Coaches and Trains that are scheduled for operation.
