    The City of Maribyrnong is situated within the metropolitan area of Melbourne. This city covers approximately 31 square kilometers of area. The council consists of 3 wards which are River, Stony Creek, and Yarraville. The City of Maribyrnongconsists of 7 councilors.  

     

    History

    The City of Maribyrnong was established in the year 1994 by the union of City of Footscray and parts of city of sunshine. The name Maribyrnong is from Aboriginal term Mirring-gnay-bir-nong which means ‘I can hear a ringtail possum’. Maribyrnong has the second most ethnically diverse population in Victoria. 

    Demographics

    According to the 2016 census, the population of Maribyrnong was 82,288At least 40% of the city’s population were born overseas and around 40% of them speak a language other than English. The highest language groups include Vietnamese, Greek, Mandarin, Italian and Spanish. The average weekly household income is around $1200. Around 25% of the households are couples with children. Around three-fourth of the households have an internet connection. During the period from 2004 to 2008 saw the highest percentage of skilled immigrants moving to the city. The majority of the new arrivals were from China, India, Bangladesh and Pakistan. Most of the new immigrants were in the age group from 20 to 30.

The university is also known for being the Council’s largest employer

    Libraries

    The council’s library service has 5 branches and they are located at Footscray, West Footscray, Yarraville, Braybrook and Maribyrnong at Highpoint Shopping Centre. The city housing the second most ethnically diverse population in Victoria has a large amount of material in languages other than English. The Footscray and Yarraville library provides a platform for social activities on the first and third Thursdays of each month.

    Transport

    The City of Maribyrnong is close to Melbourne CBD and takes around 8 to 10 minutes via Metro or Bus. Thus attracting a lot of culturally diverse group of people and the natural environment of Maribyrnong River

    Maribyrnong River Cruises - This awesome cruise upriver shows us a pleasant landscape of the city. They are reasonably priced and the duration is around 2 hours. 

    Hansen Reserve - A large open space with playgrounds, sports fields and Kingsville Tennis Club would be a perfect place for kids to have a picnic time.

    Pipemakers Park – This beautiful place is located on the western bank of Maribyrnong River near Highpoint Shopping Centre. This park is seen as a scenic and a great exploration destination. 

    Sun Theatre Yarraville – This historic theatre was originally opened in 1938 with a seating capacity of 1000 people. Now a theatre that hosts eight screens and are named after the closed down cinemas in the City of Melbourne.
