Good man. I was also P&O and Cunard, I was also the first OOW on the QE and did the build in Italy, met the queen etc.

I guess you're going on the Mary then, say hello to Chris Wells for me.

Ha ha small world, I am indeed off to the Mary, then the trip after joining the QE in Fremantle conveniently!

It is a small world! Have a good trip! Actually....you could do me a favour, I need the Old Mans email address, the QM one not his private one, already got that. When you get on do you think you could PM it to me? I spoke to Chris Wells a few months back for a reference and he told me to email his Cunard account but the system is all different to the QE & QV and can't remember if it's QMDCAPT, QMD1CAPT or whatever!

Also, because you know my real name, keep it quiet that I'm emigrating from people on there, you never know who knows who in this game!!

Hi CaptainC, after the orals, is one expected to stick around for any AMSA related formalities, or can return back. Was planning my trip in july. With the limited days of leave from work, time is only a luxury.

Initially, when I submitted papers to AMSA for assessment, it was for Chiefmate COR orals. Meanwhile, I managed to attend college for Master's and got Master's license from India. I forwarded this license copy for assessment. Then AMSA called me for Masters COR orals, because the eligibity criteria was same as that for India. Only the confusion was for Continued competence courses. That too got cleared after few discussions. My advise to new comers is that first get the highest qualification and then put forward your papers for assessment, otherwise your application will get delayed like mine. Anyways, all is good as long as it ends well.

Recession is about to hit Australian Oil and Gas industry very soon.Market is already flooded. The revenue earned by Oil and gas companies is less compared to wages paid to workers and expenses incurred for exploration projects. So, wise decisions are required . Those who are in the pipeline will somehow be absorbed but new comers have the chance to avoid this move of migration at this time.

USA, Russia and India have cheaper exploration projects compared to Australia, and so Australian Oil and Gas industry will suffer. This may cause reduction in wages of seafarers to increase the revenues. Also AustralianOilstocks are getting over in axecade. So its difficult time ahead.

Probably best for you to stay in India then.

The Australian market for seafarers and associated shore jobs is limited, where Oil & Gas is a considerable part of that, and yes the industry is in a major downturn worldwide and the market here is tough unless you are very experienced in the specialist areas that they are looking for.

You only have to look at the job boards to see how empty they are. Things will pick up, but at the moment I wouldn't want to be on the ground here feeding a family and trying to search for a job.

But wait in OZ to collect OZ passport, and then get back to home country.

What are you going to do while you are 'waiting' in Australia for 4 years?

I was always under the impression PR was for those who wish to make a serious commitment to Australia and eventually become a citizen?

I will continue with my present employer, and spend vacations in OZ. At some point of time, I'll find employment with OZ company. Actually, I want my two year old son to be in OZ for a better future. This is the basic reason for my migration. I am sure something will open up for me and my goals are accomplished. And ofcourse, my plans are to return back to OZ later when the job situation improves and contribute to the OZ GDP.However my son will be an Australian citizen and committed to its economic growth

You do know that you'll be paying tax to Australia anyway? Even if you stay with your current company?

Hello ,

Can anyone advice about the booking process of Cor Orals at Sydney ?

And how much time AMSA will take to issue the skill assessment cert after the oral is cleared ?

Hi Jikku,

There have been several posts about this on this thread already.....sigh.

1. Call Sydney marine office and book over the phone, it will cost AUD$430 which you pay upfront by card.

2. Approx 28 days.

In general, to apply for citizenship you will need to:

  • be a migrant who is a permanent resident

  • satisfy the residence requirement

  • be likely to reside, or to continue to reside, in Australia or to maintain a close and continuing association with Australia

  • be of good character if you are 18 years of age or over.

I don't think you will fool them.
