hey everyone, just wondering what single life is like in Adelaide? Where is the best area to live and / or go out for a 30 year old. don't really want to be surrounded by screaming kids or teeny boppers. Need a bit of info, sharpish! coming over in july and i haven't really got a clue where to go. going to be 30 in august so i got a few weeks to round up some drinking buddies.

cheers all, i'll get the first round!

I'd be looking at the CBD or thereabouts. Hubby (back when we first met) lived in the city, had a little one bedroomed place a couple of blocks from the Central Market. Was great having that place round the corner. 5 minutes walk to all the shops and so on, 10 minutes to the cafe's, bars and parklands. 2 minutes from the main bus and tram line also helped as we could pop along to Glenelg or wherever for an evening easy enough then.

I loved the little house there, if we were still just a couple we'd choose there, but now we have a child being further out works better for us.

That does sound good, what sort of price would that be? I'm going to be on a tight budget (as most of us are when we arrive).

would you recommend any coastal suburbs for singles?

im checking out pia, thanks

I moved away over 2 years ago but I doubt there will have been many changes so here are my views having lived there for 4 years.

Consider North Adelaide and Norwood. Both places have bars, cafes and restuarants on the door step. There are also supermarkets within walking distance...etc. My preference was North Adelaide primarily due to where I worked and an easy trip into the CBD; Glenelg was a bit far away from work for me. In truth, there's few other places to think about from your perspective unless you want to incur regular taxi costs or take the car out with you. Flip side, rental costs are more expensive in these places so only you can assess and justify your choice, particularly if on a tight budget.

From memory there is one nightclub in North Adelaide but it is only a 10-15 minute walk to the CBD if you want more choice. One or two bars do have music and late licences so you can stay there and then onto some place in the CBD later. The casino, which sits at the edge of North Adelaide and CBD gets busy at weekends and they have late late music on in some of their bars and club areas if poker and blackjack isn't for you. North Adelaide itself has several bars within close proximity of one another which are normally busy at weekend and have late weekend licences also. Some of the bars do have live bands and theme nights etc...There are several decent restuarants and cafes in North Adelaide worth a visit too. The one good thing about the central location is that it provides better access to other parts of the city. It can't be described as a 24/7 type of place but at least it does (or did) get livelier as the weekend approaches and in that respect, no different to any other town.

You would need to be living in Brighton or north through Glenelg to be near the action and beach I'd say.

Not cheap though................

Hi mate

North Adelaide - very nice, close to the city but can be a bit expensive

Norwood - good nightlife and restaurants, close to the city, loads going on

Goodwood - the sections closer to KWR very nice and less pretentious than Hyde Park, but very cool

Hey Danny,

I think i can offer a little advise in that matter, we both have a similar profile..i just moved to Adelaide 2 months ago. I am a single 31 yr old also on a tight budget and looking to socialise and have a good night life until i get a job. I am currently residing in the city cos the suburbs are a little too dead for me. It is a little more expensive than the suburbs as i have a 1 br apt, but it works out the same if u decide to take transportation to city everyday ....So i thought i prefer to walk around and explore...I rarely take transportation unless i wana go to the beach. North Adelaide is a nice area but not as lively as the city...Mind you Adelaide is a small city so very quiet during the week. Avg rent per week for a studio would be 200+ in the city. I would recommend the city or any close area around the city as other members suggested. If you r also looking to save money, it is frugal to eat at home, so if u r commuting in the city..very easy to go back home and eat and go out at again..Just a tip ...

Hope any of this helps...

Cheers and good luck with the Move

Nad

Hey Danny,

sorry for being late in replying, i am looking for work in the IT field. It is quite hard to land a job here having no local experience/references. A lot of people on this forum may agree. I am considering looking for other apartments also in the city. I like Adelaide a lot, people are friendly and laid back. But i am a city boy and always want to be around people. Don't enjoy falling in a routine and like to go out during the week as well. Adelaide is good for families or slow lifestyle. It does get very quiet during the week. I always need more than that :)

Hit me in private msgs so i can reply faster, maybe we can get together for a coffee/beer when u arrive, i will gladly offer any advice/help if i can.

Hi Danni, dont be confused with "North Adelaide" and Northern Adelaide Suburbs.....I thought it was worth saying. North Adelaide is just slightly north of the CBD and is both convienient to the city and a lovely area with lots of bars restaurants and cafes etc Northern Adelaide Suburbs do not have a good rep and not a good representation of what living in OZ is all about. Enjoy Adelaide and discoover all its nooks and crannys it has a lot to offer.
