Skype interview for Child Protection job WA..anyone else heard?

Heya,

Yeah i was thinking just the same....the questions when thinking back were very easy, but when you are under the cosh its much different. They turned the video off half way through and after a while one of the panels said she couldn't hear me and so not sure if they even heard some of my first answers Lol. Like some of the statements i came out with....'i think my assessment skills are top notch' lol....

I really found it difficult doing it at 6.30am, as i didn't sleep till 1am as i was worried about not waking up!! I would have given a 'top notch' performance at 1am as all my prep was going round in my head.

Yes, i didn't ask during but emailed her and she said they are interviewing for 3 weeks! Or end of March.... she said because after they get the refs back; so does that mean it doesn't matter how you perform in the interview lol?? As surely if they think you were under par in the interview they wouldn't bother with refs?

I do much prefer an interview face to face!! But its all practice if nothing else...

Yes they were very nice...did you see the sunshine also out the back hehe?

Jo xx

Hi Jo,

that's a shame re skype, but i guess there will be a few like that, and probably to be expected. I used an i pad 2, as i was informed they are good for skyping, and all went well, so anyone reading this, i would try and use an i pad over a computer.

Re doing interview at 1am, i said exactly the same to my other half, would've been a lot easier and could've slept afterwards instead of being awake all night!!!

I have put down metro areas too, don't fancy the country, and as would be bringing children (and hubby, once he leaves marines) we would prefer to be near city long term. The countrty areas are just too remote for me long term and wouldn't want to have to relocate again with kids. Would love to get northen suburbs, but guess can't be choosy. It's just where i have done a lot of research.

Oh and i missed the sunshine lol!

Anyhow, best of luck and fingers crossed for us all

Hi Peeps

Is any of you interested in going to the rural areas....i wouldn't personally by hey ho people have different take on things. i know someone who went but not sure which part of oz but they came back after 1 year.

No, not for me. I guess simply, because i have children and couldn't see myself working in ther country long term, i wouldn't want to relocate them again, so metro areas for me....hopefully!! I guess if i was single i would consider. My brother just come back from a 2 year working visa and he loved all the country areas, particulary Sharke Bay and Broome, up in the north of WA. They were his favourite parts of his tour of Oz. xx

Ah yeah, for some reason, before you said Broome was nice, a few weeks ago i felt pulled to there not sure why as i've never been...perhaps its something to do with the little brother saying i am like a witch (i play with tarot cards) hehe.

They could send me to Timbucktoo as long as it has an airport, I find a nice hunky Aussie and get out or Yorkshire....wonder what the Policemen are like?

Ya if i had kids i would be very very picky. I am all for the warmer places though, Melbourne was too cold for me. x

My referees told me yesterday that they had recieved requests for references......so fingers crossed! Tarot cards hey?....can you do your own....and if so what are they saying?

Ah yeah....there is one here chasing me but Castleford just doesn't do it for me hehe; Ya i have a 2nd cousin who is Police in Perth but don't really know him. I am all for a man in authority lol. Especially if he can help me stop speeding, or get me off speeding fines.

Hey ya, i don't normally do it for myself, however i have done it twice and positive cards came out with judgement reversed and 4swords, which means delay and being frozen. So do you think that if they are getting refs, they are doing that regardless of whether we performed good interview or not? Because why would they bother asking for refs if we didn't if you see what i mean...? I did talk of wanting my spiritual development in OZ, working with the aborigines (with their dreamtime beliefs0 and so if they want diverse employees they certainly have one with me hehe.

I had a reading a year ago and she said i would meet a police/probabtion type person, not in this country, i say bring it on!x

Well Jo, looks like you're going to Oz then!!!!

I guess if they are looking for references then good chance of being offered a post.....so long as the references are up to scratch:err: Can't see why they would bother if they were not thinking of offering a job!

Hoping my references will be sent Friday or Monday, so will keep you posted.

Hey JoJo

Just a bit of friendly pointer from someone already over here and working in Child Protection, if you use the term 'the aborigines' it's not going to be well received, it's quite offensive terminology.

I hope your interview went well for you. I had to wait for references and a ACPO check to be done before they formally sent me a contract, all done in a matter of weeks though.

Interesting point given a number of aussie SW's I worked with regularly referred to 'Abo's' .I'd never heard as much overt racism and prejudice as I did working as a SW in Australia, it was disgusting.

Hi Madgen

Where about's were you in Aus. I've never heard the term 'Abo' being used by any of the practitioners here - maybe because the majority of my team are English?. I agree that there is a significant amount of racism and prejudice here, I'm not sure how strongly anti-oppressive practice features in the teaching over here. Maybe the fact that you don't need to be SW qualified to do the role has something to do with it.

Hi Suzanne

Quite a mix, Community and Welfare, Youth Work, Psychology - don't have to be to degree level either.

The terms Aboriginal People, Indigenous Australian or Torres Strait Islander is more respectful language.

Have you done much research into The Stolen Generation?

I was working in Melbourne and the term was used on a regular basis along with disrespectful and racist terminology to describe many ethnic minority groups and those with mild learning disability; it was one of the reasons I left along with the fact they weren't open to challenge and infact became quite defensive when challenged. Australia is a good 30 yrs behind the UK in all their social work practice, they adopt theoretical frameworks and models of practice from the UK but only really pay lip service to it, I never really observed any of it being put into practice. I struggle to comprehend why in recruiting social workers from the UK they insist on such high calibre workers particularly when many of their own workers in child protection are unqualified and they don't listen to anything we have to offer anyway. Perhaps this is one of the reasons they are on this constant merry-go-round of recruitment from the UK. Might be worth a look at retention rates too.

Hi Magden/Drew

I have to say, i have not heard any bad press from the WA department for Child Protection. However, i am not sure they have undertaken a UK Recruitment campaign before. With regards to Aboriginal people, there is a particular framework for working with them. When working with an Aboriginal family, you have to consult a lead person who is a specialist, who will oversee/monitor the case and offer expertise. It is the same for other minorities too. Is this the same where you are? It sounds good in practice.

I've heard and continue to hear a lot of bad press about all of the states, what Magden says is true from my experience here, some people stay some people go. There are some English workers in my area that have been here almost 10 years others have left after a short space of time. Magden were you based in Metro or Regional location?

Yes we have that also it's called VACCA, I have no experience of working with them so have no view to offer really. In principal it works well, however, I can see where it would not.

Hello - I have just had my interview and I asked about timescale to find out if successful. They said that if the interview was successful then they would be seeking references but it would be end of March / beginning of April before offical confirmation.

Good Luck to those who are still waiting for their interview!!!

Ah yeah thanks for pulling me up Drew...I had read this before about referring to them in that way and I made sure in my interview I spoke of the 'aboriginal people'. I have an interview for NT on the 19th in London aswell. I am under no illusions as I have read Magden's comments before so its useful to hear of people's experiences.

Yes my references have been received and sent for WA...but I was the first one interviewed...lucky me!! Don't know if that is a positive sign because why would they ask for refs if haven't done a good interview? Or maybe they just do that and look at it all at the end...

It went ok - I think! It wasn't as bad as I thought it was going to be. They asked me about the areas I had put down as I have just said metro areas. They wanted to know why and if I would consider regional, did they ask you the same?? Will just wait and see if references get requested now!!! That's good news that your references have been sent back

Let me know if you hear anything else in the meantime.

Hiya, no they didn't ask about areas...like you, i just put metro areas. I had already said in my covering letter reasons as to why, eg have children and metro areas would best suit our lifestyle and so on. Well fingers crossed for you. Let us know when you hear something.
