HI,

Are you a qualified SW?

I am a Safeguarding Children's Specialist Nurse in the UK, working in the Child Protection arena, supervising school nurses and helath visitors in the community.

I am trying to look for similar jobs in WA / Perth. When you have been looking into job opportunities have you come across any agencies worth contacting?

I am just trying to work out what the CP system is out there. I have been on the Dept of Child Protection website and there seems to be positions but all for qualified SW's- any tips?

GOOD LUCK for the interview!!

Oh good luck, please let me know how you get on. Case study is usually a typical scenario, with questions relating to what steps you would take and why and what informed your decision. Usually good to refer to legislation too.

I have been qualified for almost 11 years, worked just over 2 years in CP at the beginning of my career, and now work as a prison liaison social worker for people involved in the criminal justice team for community drug and alcohol team. Although not directly CP, work with many parents whose children are part of CP Plan.

With 6 months under your belt, i'm sure you'll be fine. It's a flipping hard job, but love the pace of it and the unpredictability of what each day brings lol!

Have you stated which locations you would prefer...i have stated Metropolitan areas.

Well i am excited, but keep blowing hot and cold, very big decision, decisions!!!

Good luck,

Suzanne

I am afraid i haven't come across similar roles for Oz. You may be best to look at the nurses threads an forums and ask there. Sorry couldn't be more helpful!

Good luck

Hi Suzanne,

Did you applly for the Northern Territory ones aswell? I did but haven't heard. Yes i applied for Perth and up the coast a bit, i like the coast better than city. I asked my friend who is curretnly living there which areas were best to put down.

Yes this has been my firm goal for a year now...was just waiting for such opportunities, I have no commitments here and nothing going on for me here so it is the right time and Aussie fellas |i feel are more attractive so its for that reason aswell hehe. Are you coming out witha family? Have you been watching 'wanted down under'?

The skype thing is a bit strange as I haven't used it in a general sense before.

Was it you that posted on community care forum about this interview...if not then there is definately someone else being interviewed then.

Good luck!!! Joanne

Hi Joanne,

No i didn't apply for NT, only WA. Although did look at that but too remote with kids i think, and not sure i would survive the weather in NT, although my brother was there last year, he loved it, but favoured WA after his 2 yr tour around Oz.

I have 2 children, 4 and 8, which makes it stressful i guess, thinking about schools and accommodation and a hubby who is panicking about what job he could do after 22 yrs as a royal marine. I envy you, no commitments! Wish i'd taken the leap before kids. As for Aussie blokes...i guess they're pretty well tanned and athletic looking lol!

Skype interview will be weird, have a test session tomorrow morning. i'm not nervous about the interview yet...just think what will be, will be. Have i been watching Wanted Down Under?...yes since about 5 yrs ago and have them on my sky + ready to refer to lol!

Hey good luck for the interview. Please let me know how you get on...be good to get support from others in the same position. By the way, where in the UK are u?

I am in Poole, Dorset. I'll add you to my friends list if that's ok so i can locate you and let u know how things have gone my end.

Ah yeah I have wanted to emigrate there for a long time and boyfriends kept blocking me going there...their mums saw me as a threat of taking their sons away! So i have kept myself free now. Even if I am not accepted I will go 6months on a tourist visa there.

My interview is at 6.30 arrrgh, I am not a morning person!! I would imagine its because of my surname as I usually have to go first at things!

Yes that is fine to accept as friend. How are you prepping? I am reading the 'Working together 2010', 300pg book as its everything step by step.

Your kids will be fine....as long as you don't show them a video of their grandparents crying aka 'wanted down under'

I am in Yorkshire now but worked 4yrs for Hampshire. x

Hi Suzanne

I have an interview for a social work post in Melbourne I live in Leeds and i've been doing CP for 3 years now. Please could you tell me what questions you have been asked as they may guide my reading as well for my interview. i would also like to apply for the WA jobs but i missed the closing date for this one. What sort of materials are you reading in preparation. Are you reading anything about aboregional cultures i think they would probably ask a question about that.

Hi Jessyjay,

I'm sure if you expressed an interest online, they would let you apply for CP social worker in WA. I have done a little reading on aboregional cultures, and the Signs of Safety in Child Protection Framework. I haven't gone overboard to be honest, as there is a case study which i will get half hour before the interview via e mail, which i have been told will involve 4 questions and which will form part of the interview. So i'm hoping to be able to refer to some of the reading i have done in the case study. I'll let you know how it goes and what things they ask. I'll feedback tomorrow evening, as interview is tomorrow morning. Getting a little anxious now lol.

Regards

Suzanne

Hi Suzanne

Goodluck with your interview. i hope you will do well and get the job. Thanks for the response. I'm sure with your experience and the reading you should be fine. I have gone into the WA website and have sent an email to check if they will consider a late application so hopefully will get a response soon. Have you read about the stolen generation just some history on the aboriginal pple. Sorry this might be late. Anywhere will be happy if you share your interview experience with me at least it might help me with my reading and knowing what to expect for mine in March i know the policies and proceedures for WA are different. GOOD LUCK!!!!!

Hi Jo,

Just keen to know how you got on today. Hope it went well. I felt i did average really. No trick questions, but i did get a bit tongue tied and thought of some excellent answers once interview was over...things i had planned to say, but hey ho, wait and see.

On the whole, thought the panel were really nice and helpful. One question, did they say when they would let you know, i didn't ask that question!!

Heya,

Yeah i was thinking just the same....the questions when thinking back were very easy, but when you are under the cosh its much different. They turned the video off half way through and after a while one of the panels said she couldn't hear me and so not sure if they even heard some of my first answers Lol. Like some of the statements i came out with....'i think my assessment skills are top notch' lol....

I really found it difficult doing it at 6.30am, as i didn't sleep till 1am as i was worried about not waking up!! I would have given a 'top notch' performance at 1am as all my prep was going round in my head.

Yes, i didn't ask during but emailed her and she said they are interviewing for 3 weeks! Or end of March.... she said because after they get the refs back; so does that mean it doesn't matter how you perform in the interview lol?? As surely if they think you were under par in the interview they wouldn't bother with refs?

I do much prefer an interview face to face!! But its all practice if nothing else...

Yes they were very nice...did you see the sunshine also out the back hehe?

Oh also, i asked where they would place peeps etc. They said they really do need people rurally.....

They also asked if i would be coming on my own or with others.....would that be allowed by HR here? Just querying as interested in all the differences etc.

I bet most have put Perth Metro! x
