another 457 visa Brit in Sydney.

Recommended Posts

Hello All

Yeah I know another 457 visa Brit in Sydney! I though id say hello and find some social events to attend.

I am 32 year old and moved here on my own as part of an internal employee transfer. I am all about sport, tech and socialising. I live on the Lower North Shore (mistake 1, its dull) and work in the CBD in a very small office of 4 people (mistake 2) so my social network is not going to come from work.

Thanks for reading

Alex

Welcome to the club! There are quite a few Sydney social threads, have a look for the meetups. I am prob too boring for you LOL and live out in the Hills district, but, sports wise we both do diving so if you are interested in that I can give you some pointers!

Hi!

Also guarantee I'm too old, dull and family-oriented for you, but welcome nonetheless ;)

Whereabouts on the LNS are you? It's not so dull around Neutral Bay/Cremorne or Crow's Nest. But south of the harbour is probably a better bet for the party hounds

thanks for the welcome, I am living on the lower north in Cremorne point. It has nice views, it is very easy to get to work in the city and most of Sydney but very dull otherwise.

I am not a party animal out 7 nights a week that was my early 20's in London's west end but the lower north just stops dead past 6pm and the hotels or bars are dead.

Thanks

Alex

Yeah, its quiet. The Oaks in Neutral Bay is OK but it's only one pub. It's not *totally* dead around there IME but it's nothing like many areas of London. Mosman in general (incl Cremorne) is posh family territory so no surprises really

I would move to Manly or (better) somewhere south of the bridge for more life personally. As you're probably committed to where you're living for a bit, then join clubs, especially sports clubs if that's your thing (I'm assuming you mean participating rather than just watching)

I have found cycling and running (my things) clubs to be very open and welcoming. With a few more months under my belt I'll get back into golf and tennis and hope I find similar there

Yeah The Oaks is about as good as it gets, but it was all groups of people and nobody returning the conversation.

I can quit my lease and will do in Jan. I only had 30days to find a home when I landed so it will do for now and I hope by then I will know where I want to live.

Move to Surry Hlls where I live. I stop for a drink on the way home from work at 0030 and the pubs don't even go quiet after 6am let alone 6pm. Sports might be the way to get in with people too. Bloke I know told me he plays squash, goes to the gym, etc and has formed a social network that way.

Which EPL team do you go for? If you are a Spurs fan (or willing to pretend to be!) Come along to The Triple Aces pub on the corner of Campbell and Elizabeth Sts, Surry Hills after 1am on Sat/Sun night to meet some friendly Aussie and Pommie fans.

Look on the 'other' site - Britishexpats - i see they have a regular Thursday night CBD drinks session - all welcome.

Remember to come down to The Triple Aces for the Spurs games. We had a good turn out for the game against Bolton. Next game is Stoke City, bit more anti-social as it will be early Monday morning I think - 3am if it's 4pm Sunday in UK?

Just jumping in as a fellow Spurs fan here! Only just heard about the Ace - will definitely be checking that out for an upcoming game (a Saturday night/Sunday morning will be ideal - when we next have a game at that time!). Does it still fill up for the Sunday afternoon/Monday morning games? Sunderland game on Monday 19th kicks off at 2am which could be a good'un...

Having watched every game so far from the comfort of my living room or bedroom at these ungodly hours, not sure I can do the 3am though! May have to stick to the 5pm repeat of the full game on Fox 1 on Monday...

People turn up for every game, even at the most inconvenient of times - 3am on Monday morning for the Stoke game for instance. It's difficult but it's a good committment. Sometimes I think 'I can't be bothered tonight,' (and I only live up the road whilst others come from all over the City.) But when I get there it's a real 'buzz' to have other Spurs fans who have become friends, greet me, shake my hand, know my name.

I'm not sure what I'll do on Sunday evening, sometimes I go out for a drink and 'kick on' all night, other times I try to get a couple of hours sleep first.

Join Ozspurs and you'll get yourself on the texting list for notice of game times so you can be sure you won't be the only one going! Send an email to Steve at the address below!

PS Make sure you say that 'Dave' sent you! I'm not on a retainer but I need to atone for my 'sin' of inviting my Gooner mate down to the Aces on Saturday night!

Id like too but I have discovered that if I am out past 11pm on a Sunday I cant get back over the bridge via public transport and the first bus is 6am Monday morning.

My area sucks anyone got a house share going I need to move?

The game finishes at 5am anyway so by the time you get to the bus stop it will probably be time for the first bus anyway! Is there a night bus by the way? Not that I'd like to get one myself. My friend Bill sometimes gets it back up to Killara I think - he lives at St Ives. Is a cab out of the question? Depending on who is there you might get a lift too. Steve is coming and he will getting a train back up to the Central Coast. The pub is close to Central, five minutes along Elizabeth St. There will be people at the pub from 1am.

I've just had a bit of a trek myself tonight - went to Newtown for a beer at the Bank Hotel - got the train to St Peters then walked back - then got a cab to Woolahra Hotel then walked home to Surry Hills, no cabs about probably due to the concert - Foo Fighters I think?

3am Monday morning is probably pushing it. I'll definitely be up for coming along another time though...

I think the next game after Stoke is a 2am KO also on a Monday morning v Sunderland but the one after that is Tottenham v Chelsea 8pm ko in London so it will be 7am here -

20:00Tottenham v Chelsea White Hart Lane bugger i missed the date but sure it is Friday 23rd at 7am - yes it is - sure to be a big crowd for a derby, probably some people on holiday by then too.
