oidara
We are thinking of making the move to Oz and I am hoping that my parents will also be able to emigrate with us (not sure on which visa yet - all very confusing!). However, I am wondering about the health situation. My mother had drug-induced hepatitis 2 years ago (now resolved) and this year she also had breast cancer. The breast cancer was early stage non-invasive and the situation is also now fully resolved, but I am wondering if this will affect their chances of entering Australia. They have private medical care in the UK at present and I imagine they would continue to do so in Australia too.
_shel
Health issues aside, for which I'd recommend you seek advice from a registered migration agent who specialises in health issues, you need to think about what visa they would go on! It might be a stopper straight away but an agent would be able to advise you on your chances based on other cases. They couldnt go on your visa being from the UK. There are various parent visas, one being very expensive, one taking 15 yrs to process, neither can be applied for until unless your parents meet the balance of family test http://www.immi.gov.au/migrants/family/balance-family.htm and you have a visa, do you qualify yourselves? Then move to Australia and are 'settled', so a good few years! http://www.immi.gov.au/migrants/family/family-visas-parent.htm
rammygirl
It might also depend how old they are etc. Do they qualify for any of the other visas apart from parent visas? Do they run a business or work in a wanted occupation? There are visas possible for the over 45s apart from parent visas. Also what visa are you intending to migrate on? The more info you give the more help people can give. Have you discussed this with your parents....do they want to move to Oz permanently?? They can visit for 6 months every year or even longer with certain tourist visas. As long as they do not work in Oz and can prove strong ties to UK and return to the UK for a few months at a time, this should not be an issue. That may be enough. Guest guest36187
Before you can think about your parents coming, you have to get your visa? Do you yourselves qualify for a visa? That's the first stop. Nothing can happen until you get your visa. Re parent visas. Your parents MUST meet the balance of family test if they want a parent visa. plus you have to be settled in Australia for a period of time before they could even think about applying. oidara
We don't have our visas yet, but we would qualify for state sponsorship. I am just trying to think ahead as I don't even want to go down this path if my parents won't be eligible. Any pointers?
oidara
Sorry, rammygirl, I missed your post. My parents are 67 and soon to be 69. They have always wanted to move to Oz but never did as they didn't want to be far from family. Most of that family is now no longer around so we're the main tie. If we'd asked them a few years ago, they would've moved for sure. Now it's not so certain, partly due to the economy, but also due to their increased age and the health problems of the last few years. They are both retired and don't have a business or plan to work. 6 months per year would be fine for the first few years. I am just worried about what happens after that. oidara
Balance of family is about how many kids they have where, right? They have two kids, my sister and I. My sister lives in the UK.
Guest guest36187
Yes, that's right. If there is one in each country they qualify . They re eligible but this doesn't mean they would get their visa. However, without your visa they cannot apply. You have to get yours first. oidara
Hi, Yes, I know I need to get my visa first. But I don't even want to start the process if there's no chance of them getting in because of medical reasons or otherwise. Can anyone advise? I read one lawyer on another forum talking about applying for a visa for them when they are in Oz as this means they can stay in Oz on a bridging visa while they wait (even if it takes 20 years!). Not sure what the negatives are to this, though. No Medicare perhaps?
Guest guest36187
You need to talk to an agent. Alan collet posts on PIO. He is excellent advisor on parent visas.

Peach
thanks, i really have no idea where to start They would need to qualify for a visa, which unless they are very wealthy or still of working age, would either take 15 years to be granted or be very expensive. This is the place to start: http://www.immi.gov.au/visawizard/
