re ielts........

THE HULLS

Recommended Posts

Bad luck..... this question has been asked on here before and, if I'm remembering correctly, the general concensus is not to bother if it's the listening or reading sections that are low in points. The answers for these sections are prescriptive - so not open to any interpretation, they're either right or wrong.

Hope that this helps

hiya the dreaded ielts... i got 6.5 in reading but need a 7... any one know is worth sending for remark... don,t fancy doin the whole thing again...

Many Thanks Linda...:cute:

Hi Linda,

I took the IELTS 3 times -1st time i got the 6.5 in the reading- i am dyslexic and didnt get the question fininshed in time

2nd time i had concentrated so much on the reading got a 7.5 but.... i dropped from an 8.5 to a 6.5 on the writing and i nearly flipped out :arghh:and went to the head of the college and asked him to explain- once he read through my paper he pointed out reasons and said in his experiaence it takes 4-6 weeks to appeal it and usually the result does not get improve but i could appeal if i wanted to- i felt this would delay me further and rebooked the teast for the next day.

3rd time got my 7 in reading and 8+ in the others thank god!!!!! couldnt face doing it again!!!!!

Personally i think it is a money making scheme the fact that all 4 subjects have to be passed on the same day.

It will be work it when we get there!!!!:v_SPIN:

I got 6.5 in reading but there was disrpution in the class, so i emailed the place i took my test and they gave me another free. They said i could have a re mark or re sit, i choose re sit as i didn't want to loose time doing the remark.

On my second sitting i passed, however there was disruption again so i reported it at the end of the exam instead of when i got my results.

If there was a disruption in your exam it my be worth explaining to them. My disruption was someone asking loads of questions because they hadn't transferred their listening results to the answer sheet....this was during the reading exam.

Thinking of you.

Nic

hi klmo81, my first overall result was 7.5 and second time round was and 8.5.. it,s very difficult to do all 4 tests on the same day.. its draining as your underpressure with the time you have to complete each test.. hope you get what u want..

I have a diploma in Nursing and always got good grades in school ect so the test is hard ..

I felt the second test i did much harder.. i,m gonna try again and if i don,t get the band i need i,m gonna try for oz on another visa.. its too draining to do the test and then wait for the results . And then time has lapsed..

Is the IELTS compulsory? My wife and I are both born and bred UK citizens as are both our children. We all have UK passports. English is all our 1st and only language. I am a qualified "carpenter and joiner. I served my 4 year apprenticship in Scotland and have been qualified for 17 years. Do I also need to do a skills test?

Any clarification would be greatly appreciated.

hiya robbothe joiner... i take it ur name is rob???

Yes depending on the visa u are applying for you may need the general ielts test, and if you are on the skilled list of occupations for that visa.

We,re the same i,m from ireland orignally my hubby from N Ireland and our daughter born here so we can all speak, write English ect ect... But the IELTS is a v v hard paper to get.

The last test I did end of July was v hard , even the supervisors on that day said it was the hardest test yet.....

Personally its all a money making test.. but for the 145/146 visa i need a 7 which is quite a top mark in all 4 parts of the test.. I,ve got 9,s and 8,s but the lowest was a 6.5.

Hope this helps you. And good luck.:spinny:

A UK passport earns you an automatic 6.5 in each section of the IELTS. If all you need is a 6.5 then you don't need to sit the IELTS test. For certain skills (probably not carpentry but I don't actually know) the body doing the skills assessment requires a level of English of 7.0 or above (which you need to prove via the IELTS test). In addition DIAC awards extra points for those who can show higher levels of english (7.0 and even 8.0 since 1st July) which again can only be proved by taking the IELTS test. Finally there's state sponsorship if you need it and you may find that the state insists on you proving a 7.0 (or even an 8.0) in the IELTS test before they give you sponsorship.

Hence while the IELTS isn't compulsory you may find you end up needing to do it anyway in order to qualify for the visa you want.

Thanks for replies guys.... will go and seek advice tomorrow and then prob have to repeat it AGAIN......I,m so disheartened at the mo...

hello,

bad luck with that one, i found the reading one to most difficult of all. the true false and not given is my guess where you may have lost most points as we make too many assumptions and interpretations of what we think is right.

did you have any practice material before hand as i found this to be invaluable.

cheers

OK. That's great info. So the million dollar question? What do you actually do on these tests? As this is all news to me, I have not done any homework on the subject. As for homework, will I need to study for these tests? I cut timber for a living. Not brain tissue. lol

It's like a school exam listening is first that's 1/2 hour with 10 mins to transfer your answers to the answer sheet then it's straight on with the reading 1 hour you have to transfer your answers in this time, next up writing again 1 hour to write the letter and do the essay, speaking you have a time slot I suggest if you do not want to hang around for the rest of the day you phone your test centre and pre book a early slot :)

You have to put your hand up if you need anything, get escorted to and from the loo seriously, but you can't go during the listening exam or the last 10 mins of the others, take pens pencils and rubbers with you.

Good luck :)

I cara, think i,ve chatted to you before on this forum. I,ve sat the test in Belfast, Queens, university.. I was chatting to two girls from dublin who came up to Belfast to resit it as they found it too expensive in Dublin .£ 115 here to do it.

Hope you get the band you need.

I think I've still got a pdf file of the ielts 7 cambridge book, if anybody wants it for revision. I used it, aswell as the BBC GCSE bytesize page on the different writing of persuasive arguments and got three 8's and a 9. I only done the general exam but it boosted my points for when I apply for my visa.

Hi Linda, Yes you're right I was taking to you in another thread re the Ielts I think!

I had looked at doing it in Belfast but then with the cost of getting a bus up and prob having to stay over night the night before as i wouldn't fancy the getting the bus in the wee hours of the morning to make it on time, it would work as just as dear as down here.

Do you do the speaking part on the same day as the other parts? Here it can be hit and miss depending on if you apply early enough and request to do it on the same day but they cant guarantee it. the 1st time i had applied 2 months inadvance and was able to do all parts on the Saturday but last week even though I requested the same 6weeks in advance i didnt get it and had to do it on the Friday so had to take a half day from work which was pain as I dont have many annual leave days left to take!

It is a pain when that happens....Yep up here all the speaking tests are done in the pm.

They start around 1.30 and usually finishes around 5.30..Mine were always around the 4pm time..

Hope u get the band you need Cara as i,m now starting to feel a bit drained from it all... only 0.5 of the reading was my last result.. i seriously think the pick and choose who they want.. But i could be wrong!!! You on f/b??? we could chat better on there..

Linda.xx:cool:
